Chapter 508: Under Observation at the Hospital
Chapter 508: Under Observation at the Hospital
Nora Northwood’s head was seriously injured, and the doctor recommended her to stay in the hospital for a few days for observation and avoid any activity that could overtax her brain.
The hospital delivered a nutrition meal; Jasper Sinclair arranged it neatly for her and then sat on the nearby sofa.
"Tonight there’s a phone conference, expected to last forty minutes. If the meal doesn’t suit your taste, just call me or wave; I can see it."
"Okay, you focus on your work."
The two shared a room, the atmosphere rare in its tranquility and harmony; it felt like they hadn’t been this way together for ages.
Jasper Sinclair, when immersed in work, seemed to transform into another person, focused and undistracted.
He activated the speakerphone mode, and executives on the other end of the line were reporting on the situation at the Australian office.
The man listened intently, occasionally jotting down some figures.
At first, he glanced occasionally at Nora Northwood as she lay on the bed, fiddling with her phone.
For comfort, she had placed a pillow under her chin, her entwined legs lifting and lowering, swing by swing.
From Jasper Sinclair’s perspective, she distinctly resembled a little girl who hadn’t grown up, sparking a mental distraction that he forced himself to refocus on work.
The conference continued.
Besides the English flowing from the speakers, there were only the ticks of the wall clock’s second hand.
After approximately thirty minutes, the first round of reporting concluded, ushering in the meeting’s final segment.
No one noticed Nora Northwood putting her phone on the bedside table, sneaking up quietly.
Having just drunk some coconut chicken broth, her stomach was full of sloshing soup, and she needed to visit the restroom.
Suddenly, her foot slipped.
"Ah—"
Nora Northwood half-screamed, realizing Jasper Sinclair’s phone was still connected, quickly stopping herself.
It was too late.
The executives halted their reporting and asked, "Director Sinclair, do you need a break?"
"Five minutes."
Jasper Sinclair temporarily put down the phone and pressed the mute button.
His previously tight lips slightly relaxed; he strode over and lifted her from the floor, crisis averted. He stared intently at Nora Northwood and asked, "Why didn’t you call me?"
"I didn’t want to interrupt your work. I’m not seriously hurt, not disabled."
"Don’t say unlucky things. Do you want a drink of water, or do you need the restroom?"
Jasper Sinclair’s gaze lingered on the table for just a second before pinpointing Nora Northwood’s needs.
"Restroom."
She answered, feeling awkward, aware that they were a couple embroiled in divorce yet still behaving so intimately.
When Jasper Sinclair helped her towards the restroom, he intended to follow her inside.
Seeing this, Nora Northwood promptly stopped him at the door, halting with her voice, "I can manage myself; go back to your conference. I’ll call you if anything comes up."
"Four minutes left; I’ll wait for you at the door."
This man held an authoritative position, his tone and gaze leaving little room for refusal when speaking.
Nora Northwood couldn’t handle him and relented, shyly blushing after removing her pants, unsure if the restroom door had sound insulation.
Imagining the man at the door, wondering what his expression might be, she felt he should be expressionless.
He was even harder to grasp than the dense fog in the forest.
Night fell.
A dim nightlight remained in the hospital room, preventing it from becoming overly dark inside.
The multilayered curtains by the window were drawn tightly by the nurse, blocking even the slightest moonlight from entering.
