Chapter 89
Chapter 89
"Hello... Red Saint?" Megan's voice resonated through the dimly lit apartment.
She cautiously stepped forward, her senses heightened, trying to discern his whereabouts.
Amid the tense atmosphere, her phone suddenly buzzed in her pocket.
She retrieved it and glanced at the screen, revealing a message with a simple instruction; 'I'm up at the roof, go through the door in front of you.'
Taking a deep breath, Megan summoned her resolve and approached the door directly ahead.
It emitted an eerie creak as it swung open, revealing a narrow staircase leading upward, towards the rooftop.
The faint lighting accentuated the sense of mystery, transforming each step she took into a thrilling journey into the unknown.
Finally, Megan stood on the rooftop, her eyes gradually adjusting to the darkness enveloping the space.
The moonlight cast eerie shadows, adding a touch of mystery to the encounter.
Her gaze swept across the expanse, desperately searching for the one who had asked for her presence.
And then, her eyes caught sight of a figure standing near the edge, his form outlined against the night sky.
Momentarily unsure of how to approach him, Megan hesitated.
But finally, she gathered her courage and called out, her voice carrying on the breeze, "Hey... I'm here!"
The figure turned his head towards her, his face partially illuminated by the moonlight.
His intense black eyes locked onto Megan, assessing her presence with a keen gaze.
It was their first meeting, having communicated only through phone conversations over the past few months
A brief silence hung in the air as he seemed to study her reaction, just as she scrutinized his appearance.
He possessed dark, almost raven-like hair and striking facial features.
Dressed in simple jeans and a sky-blue hoodie, his hands found solace in the pockets, exuding an air of casual confidence.
"Come closer," he commanded in a low, authoritative tone, his voice exuding a sense of power, and Megan didn't hesitate, her steps confident and resolute.
When she was within a few feet of him, he spoke again, a small smile playing on his lips.
"It's nice to finally meet with you Miss Hayes." He paused for a second, before continuing on in a much calmer yet assertive tone.
"I hope our meeting today will be mutually beneficial." He said.
And with the rush of anticipation fueling her determination, Megan responded with unwavering composure, "So do I."
The figure's smile widened, as he turned back and reached for an envelope sitting on the floor, then held it out towards her.
She accepted the envelope without hesitation, her eyes fixed on the plain white card.
Carefully, she opened it, revealing a small transparent bag containing a dried, black powdery substance.
Tentatively, she lifted it up, inspecting its contents, and then shifted her gaze towards the man standing in front of her.
"What is this?" she asked, her voice filled with uncertainty.
"It's poison," he replied simply, his expression turning serious.
"It's highly potent and once it enters the victim's system, it becomes untraceable."
The smile on the man's face faded, and his tone became more commanding as he continued, "I want you to use it on Reynold Becknard. It's a much more effective way to sever his ties with his wife."
Megan tilted her head in confusion, her eyes still locked with the enigmatic man's. "Excuse me?!" she exclaimed, genuine surprise resonating in her voice.
"You must be out of your mind!" she yelled, her disbelief evident as she paused for a moment, her mouth still agape.
"I... I can't do that," she continued, her words stumbling out amidst her growing unease.
"Whatever reason you have for wanting them separated, resorting to such extremes is nothing short of madness and absurdity."
"There's no way I can help you with that... I'm not a killer..."
The figure's expression hardened even, and his eyes bore into Megan with an intensity that sent a chill down her spine.
His voice turned colder, devoid of any empathy.
"I'm giving you a better and quicker option to complete the task I gave you and this is what you say?"
He closed the remaining distance between them, his presence becoming even more imposing.
Megan could now see his features with greater clarity, their proximity intensifying the encounter.
She shook her head defiantly "I may be a lot of things but I'm not a killer!..." She yelled.
And with those words uttered, the man's demeanor shifted entirely.
In a swift and chilling display of force, he closed the remaining distance between them.
Without hesitation, his hands found their way to her neck, applying a sudden and decisive pressure.
And with a sickening crack, he abruptly twisted her head to the side, severing the delicate connection between her vertebrae.
Her head lolled lifeless to the side as her body went limp, collapsing to the cold rooftop with a lifeless thud as he released his grip on her.
The chilling silence seemed to fill the air, tainted by the weight of his twisted satisfaction.
He remained unmoved, his expression unchanging, as he looked down at Megan's motionless form.
His voice tinged with cruel satisfaction, he spoke, "Unfortunately for you...I am a killer and I never hesitate when I'm told to get rid of someone."
With a solemn gesture, he lowered himself, his hand reaching out to delicately shut her lifeless eyes.
"Do rest in peace, Miss Hayes," he concluded, his voice devoid of remorse.
Methodically, he removed the skin-tone gloves from his hands, carefully folding them and tucking them into his pocket.
The small transparent bag containing the black powdery substance, now abandoned on the floor, was swiftly retrieved and concealed within his pocket as well.
With a final, composed glance at Megan's lifeless form, he straightened up, ready to depart, leaving behind an aura of cold detachment.
However, just as he turned to leave, the door leading to the rooftop burst open, revealing a group of masked men, each wielding their guns with precision.
In a swift and coordinated motion, they closed in on him and Megan's lifeless body, encircling them with an air of determination.
His brows furrowed as he looked mildly irritated at the turn of events.
Sighing softly, he spoke up, "Well, well...what do we have here..." he said, turning his full attention towards the newcomers.
Though tensed, his mouth curved upwards in a devilish grin, and a sinister glint flashed in his eyes.
The leader of the group glanced at Megan's lifeless body sprawled out on the floor before his gaze traveled back to the man who stood by her corpse.
Stepping forward, he addressed him with authority.
"Red Saint, your game is up," he declared, his tone cold and determined.
"Drop any weapons you may have and place your hands behind your head. Do it slowly and follow the instructions."
"Any sudden movements will be considered a threat, and force will be used if necessary."
"Comply now, and your arrest will be carried out fairly."
But assessing the situation, the man's calculating gaze glanced at the dead Megan on the floor before back at the people that all had their guns out and surrounded him.
Aware of the overwhelming odds against him, he swiftly weighed his options, knowing that capture was not an option he could afford.
In a split-second decision, his left hand darted to his back, retrieving a concealed gun from his pocket.
He aimed it directly at a particular SWAT officer, intending to turn the tables in his favor.
However, before he could squeeze the trigger, a vigilant member of the SWAT team anticipated his move.
Reacting with lightning speed, the officer fired a single shot.
The bullet found its mark, piercing his chest, causing him to stagger backward in pain.
His grip on the gun weakened, and it fell from his hand, clattering against the ground.
The man's body convulsed with pain, his grip on the wound tightening as blood continued to flow, staining his hands and clothes.
Shock and disbelief clouded his eyes, realizing the gravity of the situation he now found himself in.
The members of the SWAT team moved swiftly and purposefully, closing in on him with a sense of urgency.
The team leaders swiftly relayed the need for immediate medical assistance, while another officer knelt beside him, applying pressure to the gunshot wound in an attempt to stem the bleeding.
Meanwhile, the rest of the team maintained a vigilant perimeter, their weapons trained on him, ready to react to any sudden movements or signs of resistance.
His gasps for air became shallower, each breath a painful reminder of his deteriorating condition.
His once formidable presence waned, replaced by a sense of vulnerability and desperation.
Thoughts raced through his mind, seeking an escape route or a way to turn the tables, he tried moving but the agonizing pain rendered him incapacitated.
The leader of the SWAT team, noticing this, his voice firm yet laced with a hint of concern, addressed him with authority, "Stay still and do not make any sudden movements."
"Medical assistance is on its way. Just hold on," he instructed, his tone unwavering.
The leader then turned to his team, issuing instructions, "Secure the area and initiate the necessary protocols for evidence collection."
As time ticked by, the distant wails of approaching sirens grew closer, signaling the imminent arrival of the medical team.
But the man's strength continued to wane, his body growing weaker and his senses fading quickly.
Aware of his impending fate, he struggled to gather his remaining energy, his voice feeble and strained as he managed to speak, "You think... this is over... but it's only... the beginning."
The leader of the SWAT team maintained a stoic expression, unmoved by his words.
"Save your breath," he responded calmly.
"You will have enough time to face the consequences of..." However, before he could finish his sentence, the man on the floor suddenly coughed up blood, his eyes fluttering as his body weakened further.
His voice dwindled into a mere whisper, "It's... not..." He trailed off.
With those cryptic words, his body grew still, his vacant eyes staring into the distance, his final breath escaping him.
