Chapter 146 - 145: Catching Up on the Past
Chapter 146 - 145: Catching Up on the Past
Knock, knock, knock
Li Jain knocks on the door of his grandfather.
A while later, a voice came from within, telling him to enter.
"Grandfather?" He called as he entered
"Here, in the study." Came the gravely reply: "You want to see me?"
"I brought you lunch." Li Jain took out a bowl from his spiral ring and placed it on the desk. This is one of his bestselling dishes.
"Oh, what is this?" Old Li opens the bowl curiously,
Li Jain: "This is the Nine Needle Meridian Soup. It can unclog stubborn meridian knots, reduces stagnant qi which causes repeated failed breakthroughs. But it’s effective mostly on Divine Power Realm and below, so I’m not sure how it’s going to work for you."
"It should have some effect, thank you." Old Li said, he took a sip and narrowed his eyes:
"Ah, this taste.... it’s familiar."
"How so?"
"I’ve eaten somewhere before, unfortunately, this old man can’t seem to remember where." Old Li put the spoon down and gestured to the chair opposite him: "Come, sit."
As soon as Li Jain sat, old Li said: "I’m not going to ask about what you did that made your parents kick you out. When they return from the sect, you can discuss it among yourselves." He paused and added: "How have you been?"
Just because his children know his secret and accepted him, doesn’t mean he’s going to tell everyone that he was another Li Jain who took over the body because the original Li Jain died. Before arriving here, Li Jain had already come up with a more convincing story.
"It was tough at the beginning, but everything is fine now." Li Jain said he decided to respond as the questions came, not saying too much nor too little.
"That’s good to hear." Old Li laughed: "The name of the spiritual Tavern has spread far and wide. If Fan Ruyin hadn’t brought the news that you were the owner, we would’ve all been clueless."
"Grandpa is joking." Li Jain robs the back of his head as if embarrassed: "It’s just that this grandson encounters a lot outside and partially loses his memories. Otherwise, I would have come home long ago to bring the good news."
Memory loss? The old man was taken aback.
Now it all made sense. No wonder everyone who brought the news kept saying that Li Jain had changed like a different person. It turns out he encountered some trouble and amnesia.
"How is it now?" Old Li asked worriedly
Li Jain: "It’s not as bad as it sounds. When I meet people I had previous encounters with, the memories about them will return."
"That’s good, that’s good." Old Li had a sigh of relief: "Anyways, have you encountered that person?"
What person?
Li Jain didn’t know who the old man was talking about first, before it hit him. The old man meant the person that destroyed the original owner’s cultivation and poisoned him with cold poison.
"No, I don’t think I have." Li Jain shook his head.
Old Li sighs, even if he met that person, he wouldn’t know: "Your grandfather wasn’t here when it happened, so he’s unable to take revenge for you." He said apologetically.
Li Jain: "Grandfather, it’s not your burden to bear. I’ll find a way to resolve this."
"Then I’ll leave it to you." Old Li reconsidered so quickly that even he doubted his righteous loyalty for his family.
Li Jain was also speechless by how fast he changed his face.
Old Li: "Are you not going to tell this old man about your adventures?"
"I’m not sure there’s much to tell." Li Jain replied, carefully measuring his words. The last thing he wanted was for the old man to pry too deep.
"You don’t mean to say you’ve been hiding all the exciting parts?" Old Li chuckled, his eyes sparkling with curiosity: "Don’t be modest! This old man wants to hear every detail."
Li Jain hesitated, he didn’t encounter anything exciting personally, but his kids did, so he said: "I was lucky enough to get an inheritance from a spiritual food master. I have been very diligent since then, practicing. That’s how I was able to move to Qingyang Town and open the Spiritual Tavern. I also collected many secret techniques along the way, which improve my children’s physique and spirit roots."
Li Jain decided to mention this because when the old man meets the children later, he’ll see that all of their spirit roots have turned into single spirit roots and have been upgraded as well. Instead of waiting for him to say something then, he might as well mention something about it now.
"When my eldest son Yujian awakened, it suddenly attracted the attention of a demon elder who was at the end of his life. The demon kidnapped him and wanted to take over his body.
Old Li’s brows knitted tightly together: "Did you manage to save him?" He asked with concern.
No one had mentioned that Li Jain lost one of his children so, the child should be saved. Don’t blame Old Li for not knowing his great grandchildren. He has over twenty children, hundred plus grandchildren, over three hundred great grands, and even some great-great grands.
"Yes, I did. Luckily, I caught up with the demon before he left town. Otherwise, I can’t imagine the consequences." Li Jain felt pain in his chest just thinking about it.
"That’s good," Old Li had a sigh of relief: "As the head of a family, you need to provide a safe environment for your family. Your children need to feel safe and secure as long as you’re around."
"Apart from these few troubles, things have been very good for us."
"What few troubles? You only mention one." Old Li said with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
Li Jain was speechless, he didn’t expect his grandfather would be so stubborn. Li Jain thought for a moment and told him about the investors from Jade Cliff City.
"The Celestial Jade Commerce Alliance?" Old Li frowned.
"Yes, that’s them. Do you know about them, grandpa?"
Old Li’s glare sharpens: "Yes, I’ve heard of them. They have a reputation for being shrewd and ruthless in business. What dealings do you have with them?"
"They approached me with an investment offer for the tavern. Their terms were as you said, they didn’t negotiate and only threatened to come back in two months." Li Jain said simply. He wasn’t as worried as before and the main one is Liu Xiong.
Li Jain believes that Liu Xiong was either in the Feudal King or False God realm. Although it seems like that was too much of an expectation, he still thinks so. As for him, if he continues cultivating like he is now, he should reach that level within ten years.
For cultivators, ten years is just a drop in the bucket. There are some who can go into seclusion for 20+ years.
Old Li nodded solemnly: "Nothing good comes from dealing with those who have ulterior motives. But don’t worry, as long as they know that you have the Li family behind you, they wouldn’t dare to make any rush move. This old man has fought with them before and can do it again!"
Li Jain raises his eyebrow with a smile on his lips. He really didn’t expect for his grandfather to have fought with the Celestial Jade Commerce Alliance. After all, whoever mentioned them always was afraid in their voice and was desperate to not get on their bad side.
"What was the fight about?" Li Jain asked curiously.
"It happened over ten years ago. During that time, the family refining business was just starting to take root. But they wanted to control 50% of the profit. You should be able to guess what will happen next."
Old Li was too lazy to explain, but Li Jain didn’t press on either. He was just glad that his grandfather was a dominant figure.
The two talk for over an hour, talking about both important and random things.
Seeing that it was getting late, Old Li dismissed Li Jain: "Try to get along with your sister. She has been the most worried about you."
Li Jain paused at the door and nodded: "Okay." He knew the old man was talking about Li Xinyue. He also has a good impression of this sister.
