Chapter 788 788: Change of heart.
Chapter 788 788: Change of heart.
Hours passed like a slow, heavy dream. Outside the massive walls of the fortress, drones patrolled heavily. There footage was being relayed back for the residents in the base to watch.
Different cities were rocked with explosives and invasions of mutant beasts just as the watchers escaped earth. It seemed like many others were unwilling to leave so easily. They had to do one last act of revenge.
On the bubble of fortress four, the watchers were yet to make any move. They had their eyes glued to the base, patient, but at the same time twitching with frustration. For so long, they had been waiting for Sunshine and her team to make a move, but the fortress remained as still as a tomb. Residents had been told to stay indoors. The gates were sealed.
To make matters worse, the frequency they had been using to spy on the internal conversations had gone dead again. They were blind, deaf, and running out of patience and time.
High above, the black Repairman robots had multiplied. There were now so many of them that they looked like a dark, metallic blanket covering the sky. Their voices, synchronized and cold, boomed across the earth. "One hour remaining until rift sealing begins. All nonresident entities should leave within the remaining minutes or forever be sealed on earth."
The announcement was followed by warning bells, the kind that could instill the fear in anything.
Inside the Quinn house, the atmosphere was a strange contrast to the chaos outside. Sunshine spent a big part of the day watching movies, feasting with the family and playing a board game with her children. They were all tired, but sleep was the furthest thing from their minds.
Only Leo was taking a nap on White's back. Both were snoring!
The rest of the Quinn's had returned to their apartments or command center. Sunshine and the boys were talking about the future. Because there was hope for a future now.
"When the watchers go away, can we go to the beach?" Ariel asked, his eyes wide with hope.
"I want to see the ocean and pick seashells and draw in the sand with a stick." Castiel added, eyes full of stars as he longed for the view he had not seen in so long.
Sunshine smiled, though her heart felt a little heavy. She knew that even when the Watchers and their mutants were gone, earth wouldn't just go back to normal overnight. The disasters had ruined the world. Mutant beasts were still out there, as were pieces of prime core.
The biggest problem was going to be fixed, but the aftereffects would take longer to fix. As for the mutations in animals, people and vegetation, those would last forever.
But for the sake of the kids, she kept her voice light. "We'll get to the beach, of course. It might take a while for the beaches to return to how they were, we'll get there." She said to them. She would take them to Glacis. That could count as a beach.
Ariel sighed, "It will take years for us to see a normal beach again, won't it? And with all the mutated fish and crocodylus and Shardlings and other things like those fish men, nobody should be near any ocean for the next ten years."
Sunshine raised her brows. His words were a reminder that they would need to clean up the oceans and seas the same way they had cleaned the river. Not her people...specifically. Just humans in general. They would have to hunt all the deadly mutated beasts and wipe them out.
Hades walked into the living room just as the robots made their second final one-hour countdown. He looked at Sunshine and gave a sharp nod.
"Everything is set," Hades said, his voice low. "Moon is in the car. She's... well, she's completely insane, Sunshine. Dominic did a number on her. She's strapped into the seat, screaming at shadows and crying about things that aren't there. She's afraid of her own reflection."
Sunshine scoffed, a short, dark laugh escaping her lips. "Her problems are just beginning. She had two lifetimes to be a decent human being, and she chose to be a monster in both. Now, she can see what it feels like to be the prey."
She stood up, dusting off her pants. "We set off in thirty minutes. We need to do this at the last possible second. That way, the Watchers won't have time to double-check anything. They'll be so panicked about the rift closing that they'll just grab what they think is the prize and run."
The thirty minutes blurred by in a haze of preparation. Sunshine walked out to the armored transport vehicle where Moon was waiting. Her cousin looked pathetic. She was dressed in a weak fake exo-suit that actually did absolutely nothing. It had no shields, no strength enhancement, and no weapons. It was just a costume.
Sunshine nodded at Dominic and climbed into the car. He grabbed Moon's neck through the window and looked into her eyes, undoing what he had done to her.
When he was finished, Moon was trembling, her eyes darting around the interior of the car. As soon as she saw Sunshine in the back, she let out a whimpering sound.
"I'm sorry for what Dominic did to you, I was too angry when I gave the order," Sunshine said, her voice sounding surprisingly kind. "I've been thinking about it, Moon. For the sake of our family and our past, I've decided to forgive you. I've forgotten the old grudges."
Moon's head snapped up. She looked at Sunshine with desperate, tear-filled eyes. "I knew it! I knew you'd understand! You're my sister, Suni! You're the only one who truly loves me!"
"I know," Sunshine lied smoothly. "But you have created a lot of enemies cousin. The only way you're getting out of here safely is if you look like me. No one will touch you if you look like me."
Sunshine handed Moon a small, simple hair tie. "Here, tie your hair back. It'll make the mask fit better."
"Mask?" Moon frowned
Sunshine nodded.
Moon grabbed it frantically and pulled her hair into a ponytail. She didn't flinch at the sharp pain from her abdomen. Every part of her body ached from the beating the Stewards had given her.
Then, Sunshine pulled out an illusion mask. "Close your eyes," she whispered.
She placed the mask over Moon's face and smirked. Within seconds, the mask shimmered and melted into Moon's skin, covering the original appearance completely.
When Moon opened her eyes and looked into the rear-view mirror, she gasped. The face staring back at her was Sunshine's. The scars were gone; the ugliness was hidden behind a veil of beauty.
"Thank you," Moon sobbed, touching her fake cheeks. "Thank you, Suni."
"My personal team will escort you out and get you to a partner base we collaborate with," Sunshine said, handing her a hammer and Dragonoid. "If anything happens, use these to defend yourself."
What she didn't mention was that the Dragonoid was completely uncharged. It was a paperweight. The hammer was also a fake. Nobody could lift the original hammer but Sunshine.
"Good luck, Moon. I hope that you do some good for earth." Sunshine said, stepping out of the car.
"Thank you, sister!" Moon called out one last time. She hoped her voice sounded grateful enough. When she was safely away, she would plan and get her revenge. Her focus was on survival that she was not paying attention to what was happening in the sky.
