Chapter 789 789: Moon's final fate.
Chapter 789 789: Moon's final fate.
Sunshine stood next to Hades near the mountain base gate, her expression turning into stone. The team, led by Poncho and Carson, climbed into the truck. Moon was placed in the back, standing where she could be clearly seen through the reinforced glass.
Behind them, an invisible team, prepared to follow. They were the backup, just in case the Watchers tried to kill the team instead of just kidnapping the target.
"Drone team follow," Hades instructed. He had a tablet in hand that he planned to use to keep an eye on the group that was going out.
The gates opened wide. Three armored vehicles roared out at full speed, tires kicking up clouds of ash dust.
High above, Pink's eyes lit up on seeing the armored trucks move. "There! The center vehicle! It's her! I see her face!"
"Let us get her?" Another watcher shouted.
All the watchers departed at once, leaving the bubble free and clear. Sunshine finally made her way to the top of the wall, looking out into the distance.
The cars drove through the empty roads at maximum speed, leaving dust and sparks in their wake. Around them, a swarm of drones flanked every side. The front, back and above, every inch covered. Residents who lived near the roads peeked out of their windows, curious and fearful.
It didn't take long for the gates of Kingsbridge to open. As if the air could sense what was about it happen, it became hotter. A small storm was gathering above, as if the Grand Masters were about to begin their work.
Moon couldn't tell what was about to happen, but she was frightened. Her heart was beating so loudly and she couldn't breathe. Her instincts were screaming that something that was not right. The pain in her stomach was getting worse, and she was getting dizzier.
"I can't breathe." She cried out. "Get me out of this suit."
Nobody responded to her. The superhumans just prepared their weapons, as if they were about to engage in combat.
Watchers swarmed above, following their leader whose eyes were sharper than those of a falcon during a hunt. "We have twenty one minutes before the rift closes! Grab her and get to the extraction point!" Pink screamed.
The Watchers descended at the speed of light, appearing in flashes of lightning bolts. Their wings covered the sky as they swatted drones out of the way and enveloped the convoy. The lead vehicle was kicked by a watcher, and it overturned. The second vehicle was ripped through with claws and slammed out of the way.
Moon let out a loud shriek.
Windows were lowered, and weapons came out. Poncho and Carson seemed to shadow Moon, firing back with everything they had, making it look like they were desperately protecting their leader.
"They are focused on isolating us, they must be after Sunshine." Poncho screamed into the speaker, knowing the Watchers were listening. "Turn around, let's head back to the base. Protect Sunshine at all costs!"
The chase was a blur of fire and dust. The Watchers were relentless, driven by the ticking clock. After eight minutes of intense fighting, the target vehicle swerved violently. Poncho, Carson, Elio and Phillip activated their exo suits. They flew backwards out of the vehicle, making it look like they had been blown back by an explosion.
But much like others, they started flying away, screaming as if they were afraid for their lives and desperate to escape.
"I will go for back up." Poncho bellowed through a loudspeaker. "We are coming Sunshine."
Moon was left alone in the back of the truck, screaming and crawling out slowly. She wanted to yell for them to stop calling her Sunshine, but her throat was in so much pain.
Pink lowered her body, her claws reached down and scooped Moon up with a single grab. "Thirteen minutes left!" Pink shouted over the roar of the engines that was heading in the direction of the crush. The watcher guessed that these were Sunshine's people returning for her. "I have got her, I have got Sunshine Raine, let's move now."
Moon fought and screamed saying that she was not Sunshine, but her struggle was nothing compared to the grip of the Watcher on a ticking clock. Pink ripped off the exo suit with a beak, blew something like mist into Moon's face, rendering unconscious. Then, she inserted Moon into her wing such that the robots guarding the rift would not see her.
Sunshine watched it all with her eyes whose focus was almost as sharp as Elio's. She saw the watchers take off, moving at breakneck speed toward Lakeland where the giant rift was, thousands of miles away from the fortress. She felt no guilt. She felt no hesitation. She only felt a massive, cooling relief settle into her bones.
"System," Sunshine whispered. "Monitor the Doom's Wand. I want to know the exact second it crosses into Xylos."
[Tracker activated host. Target is approaching the rift... three... two... one... Target has exited Earth's atmosphere. You will be alerted when the target gets to Xylos.]
Sunshine let out a breath she felt like she'd been holding for two lifetimes. "Perfect."
She turned around and finally went down from the wall. This was over, she did not have to worry about Moon anymore or the Xylas plotting their revenge or attacking any other world. She was going to end them forever, the way the Mostoys had ended the Noxians.
When she reached the ground, Hades and Leah were waiting. They didn't need to ask. They saw the look on her face.
"They got her." Sunshine confirmed. The serum Ala had injected into Moon to make her unconscious for at least a month if necessary was about to react. The illusion mask had been modified to maintain her appearance as Sunshine. Dominic had left a trigger in her mind to make her think she was dumb and wipe the rest of her memories in twenty-four hours.
All these were preparations made in case it took the Xylas a while to get back to their home planet or the creatures searched her mind. Moon was not just a prisoner of war. She was a weapon from earth.
Leah stepped forward and pulled Sunshine into a hug, crying tears of genuine joy.
"It's done," Leah whispered. "Thank you Suni, I cannot begin to explain how light my heart has become. Now I can focus on raising my Ala without any resentment."
"She's gone, Leah," Sunshine said softly. "And when that wand in her body goes off... she'll be no one's problem ever again."
As far as they were all concerned, it was a chance for Moon to repay the world for all the deaths she had caused. It was justice for everyone that had died at her hands.
Ten minutes later, the sky vibrated. "Attention residents of this world, we advise that you stay indoors as the rifts are sealed, there is going to be a big lightning storm for 72 hours. You have one hour to prepare yourselves."
Everyone that was outside went home. All the gates were sealed. All the pets were taken inside. Within forty minutes, the entire base was almost like a ghost town.
But there was no fear or misery. Every face was smiling. Every mind had the same question: what would the world look like after 72 hours?
