Chapter 570: The Ambush
Chapter 570: The Ambush
The moment the swarm touched the lightning, countless insects exploded into ash.
The sky filled with sparks and falling bodies. The fact that the insects were so big made the falling bodies look like falling volcano stones.
Chu Miao raised her hand as well.
The space in the middle of the swarm of insects twisted and countless insects exploded instantly.
Others vanished into the void.
More lightning strikes followed, blasting half of the creatures from the sky as Ye Xuan kept attacking.
Chu Miao stopped using space as a form of attack and switched to her light element.
A golden light shone outward towards the remaining creatures, erasing them instantly.
Pei Ming whistled through the intercom.
"Well, I shouldn’t have bothered with the maneuvers."
Ye Xuan jumped back into the cabin and closed the hatch.
Chu Miao brushed imaginary dust from her sleeve.
"Let’s hope the rest of the trip is as easy." She said as she walked back to her seat.
Unfortunately, the apocalypse rarely allowed such luck.
Five hours later, the plane finally crossed into Russian territory.
The landscape below had changed dramatically.
Endless forests stretched across the lands. Anyone who had been there before the apocalypse knew that the area was a snow-covered land. Yet, even that had melted from the extreme heat.
But what was Russia if even the snow and ice in North and South Poles had melted.
Occasionally, massive hordes of zombies could be seen wandering through the streets.
Li Kian stared outside in shock.
"There are even more zombies here than in City A."
Chu Miao nodded her head when she heard him.
"Russia’s population density was lower before the apocalypse. Fewer survivors managed to form safe zones. That probably explains why the zombies are in such large numbers. Or maybe they ignored the warning given by our government earlier. Our citizens survived in large numbers because they took precautions."
Ye Xuan suddenly leaned forward.
"The signal is getting stronger."
Pei Ming immediately adjusted the tracking device Yang Leo had fixed on the plane at the last minute.
A faint green light blinked on the screen.
"Indeed, the signal is becoming stable."
"About eight hundred kilometers northeast."
"It will take about an hour and half to fly there." Gu Fan did a fast calculation and said.
"Yes, so, find a place outside the area to land the plane. We’ll approach them discreetly." Chu Miao added quietly.
"Yes, sister-in-law." Pei Ming replied and concentrated on flying the plane.
Soon, the plane descended toward a clearing inside a forest that was strangely frozen.
As the landing gear touched the ground, the aircraft slowed to a stop and without wasting time, the five of them stepped outside.
Cold wind howled across the snowy landscape.
"How could there be frozen land at this time? Isn’t everything in the world now uniform? If it’s extreme heat, it’s heat everywhere. If it’s extreme cold, it’s cold everywhere. No other places are frozen at the moment, so, why is this forest in Russia different?" Li Kian asked in confusion.
The others also seemed to come back to their senses. They had experienced so much in the past year that they didn’t find it strange at first.
But now that someone pointed it out, something was definitely wrong.
"This place indeed feels wrong." Pei Ming muttered.
Without a word, Chu Miao kept the plane away and extended her divine sense.
Seconds later, her expression changed slightly.
"What is it?" Ye Xuan asked but also extended his own divine sense and his expression changed too.
"There are many zombies in this forest." Chu Miao said.
"Isn’t that normal?" Li Kian asked.
"Yes, it is, but it’s not normal when they stand still like robots. As if waiting for orders." She replied.
"It’s possible that the team is in their hands and they anticipated this rescue, so they planned an ambush." Ye Xuan explained his thoughts.
"That makes these zombies a little too intelligent then. And if the zombies were intelligent enough to set a trap...
Then, they were in for a ride.
It meant something far more dangerous had appeared in this part of the world.
The wind howled across the frozen plains like a warning from the world itself.
"Can someone tell me why this place is frozen?" Pei Ming couldn’t help complaining.
"It could be the work of the zombies. There must be powerful ones with abilities among them." Gu Fan said solemnly.
"It should be so." Chu Miao agreed.
Snow swirled around the five figures standing in the clearing, blurring the distant forest into a pale gray wall.
Pei Ming pulled his coat tighter around his shoulders. Even as a cultivator, he still felt the cold.
"Alright... I officially hate Russia."
Gu Fan smirked. "You’ve been here for three minutes."
"Exactly. That’s too long for me."
Chu Miao and Ye Xuan ignored their banter.
Their divine sense was still spreading outward like invisible threads, sweeping across the snowfields, into the forests, and beneath the frozen soil.
What they felt made their expressions gradually turn serious.
"There are at least three million zombies within a fifty-kilometer radius." Chu Miao stated seriously.
Li Kian sucked in a breath.
"Three million?!"
"That’s only the surface estimate," Ye Xuan added calmly.
"And the ones underground?" Gu Fan asked, almost holding his breath.
".... unknown."
Silence fell over the group.
Even for cultivators in the Nascent Soul stage, three million zombies was not a trivial number, especially when intelligence and hierarchy were now involved.
"The missing plane?" Ye Xuan asked. His eyes trailed into the distance.
Pei Ming lifted the tracker device Yang Leo had built.
The small screen showed a blinking green dot.
"Still moving very slowly. Hundreds and eight kilometers northeast."
The others frowned when they heard that.
Why would they still move if they were held captive? Or was something else going on?
"Is it the plane moving or did the team take the tracker out of the plane?" Li Kian suddenly asked.
