Chapter 395
Chapter 395
When Qin Jing’s call failed to connect, he looked visibly dejected. It wasn’t the first time—calls rarely went through, and it always felt like there were only certain times the other person could respond.
Qin Xian suddenly said, “Give me the number. I’ll have our tech team trace it.”
In an instant, Wen Bo’s hand holding his wine glass shook, spilling some of the liquid. Qin Xiaoyu, startled by the splash, looked up in confusion, but even more shocking was Qin Xian’s suggestion.
Qin Jing froze. “Huh?”
Qin Xian remained calm and serious. “I suspect you might be getting scammed. I want to help you find out who this person really is.”
Qin Jing’s expression darkened. No one would feel good about their online relationship being questioned like this.
But someone else’s reaction was even worse. Wen Bo, knowing full well the Qin family’s capabilities, was panicking. If they decided to investigate, they could expose everything in minutes. He had relied on Qin Jing’s trusting nature to keep up his facade, but now he was in real danger.
“Uh, I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Qin Jing said hesitantly.
Qin Xian analyzed the situation further. “She’s constantly avoiding meeting you. Either she has some unspeakable issue, or she’s deceiving you. Either way, taking the initiative to investigate won’t hurt. As a man, you should be proactive in pursuing a relationship.”
Qin Chao immediately chimed in, “Exactly! And if she’s in some kind of trouble, you could be her knight in shining armor and help her out. Wouldn’t that be a win-win? But if she’s a scammer… what if she’s, uh, not attractive?”
“I wouldn’t care!” Qin Jing declared firmly.
Qin Chao’s mouth twitched. “Okay, but what if she’s already married? Or worse… what if she’s a man?”
Wen Bo’s face turned visibly pale, though the dim lighting concealed it from others.
“That’s impossible!” Qin Jing retorted, clearly more resistant to the idea of his “girlfriend” being a man than being married.
“Exactly! So why not test it? If she gets mad, we’ll take the blame and apologize for you,” Qin Chao egged him on.
Even though Wen Bo weakly protested, “This doesn’t seem respectful to her,” Qin Xiaoyu joined in, encouraging her brother to investigate. She was just as curious about his mysterious girlfriend, completely oblivious to the truth that the person in question was sitting right beside her.
Ji Fei could already imagine Wen Bo’s mounting anxiety.
However, Qin Jing eventually relented and decided not to give out the number, saying instead, “Let me try contacting her again. If I still can’t reach her, then we’ll talk.”
With that, he prepared to make another call.
Wen Bo immediately stood up and made an excuse to go to the restroom.
Watching him leave in such a hurry, Ji Fei, Qin Chao, and Qin Rong struggled to hold back their laughter.
Not long after, Qin Jing’s call finally connected. Excited, he put it on speaker. On the other end, a distinctly feminine voice answered.
"Wow, that voice changer is impressive—it’s completely seamless," Ji Fei thought, impressed. Qin Chao and Qin Rong shared the same sentiment.
Qin Jing, completely captivated, smiled like a fool as he listened to the other person’s sweet voice and playful tone. Wen Bo, as always, managed to charm him within a few sentences.
Qin Xian tapped the table, reminding Qin Jing of the matter at hand.
Qin Jing brought up the family banquet. There was a moment of silence on the other end—clearly, Wen Bo was scrambling to come up with an excuse.
Finally, “she” replied, “Actually… I’ve been feeling down lately. My mom is in the hospital, and between work and taking care of her every day, I just don’t have the time or energy to meet you right now. I want our first meeting to be perfect, so let’s wait until she’s discharged, okay?”
"What the hell?! Does your mom know you’re cursing her like this behind her back?"
Qin Chao and Qin Rong were stunned. Wen Bo’s real mother was literally in the same room!
Qin Jing, completely buying into the story, immediately expressed his concern and asked for details. He didn’t doubt her for a second—no wonder he’d been scammed for so long.
After offering words of comfort and repeatedly asking if he could help, Qin Jing finally ended the call.
“Come on, you actually believe that? It sounds like a last-minute excuse!” Qin Chao blurted out.
“No one would joke about their mother’s health!” Qin Jing replied, especially sensitive to the topic since his own mother had passed away.
Ji Fei interjected, “Don’t dismiss it entirely. If it is a lie, you should be asking yourself why she’d go to such lengths to avoid meeting you. What is she hiding?”
Qin Jing looked bewildered. Qin Xiaoyu, who initially shared her brother’s thoughts, began to waver after hearing everyone’s reasoning. “Brother, I think they might have a point…”
At that moment, Wen Bo returned, his face flushed and drenched in sweat, clearly from panic.
Ji Fei glanced at him, finding his disheveled state amusing. "Serves you right for trying to get handsy with Qin Jing earlier. You won’t have a moment of peace tonight!"
Sure enough, the moment Wen Bo sat down, the discussion resumed, making him visibly uncomfortable.
Qin Xian suddenly added, “Qin Jing, why not reach out to her again? You didn’t mention that our family has access to the best medical resources. If her mother is truly ill, I’m sure she wouldn’t mind accepting our help.”
Wen Bo broke out into a cold sweat.
Qin Jing slapped his forehead. “You’re right! I’ll call her now.”
Panicking, Wen Bo quickly pretended to have forgotten something and left again.
Qin Xiaoyu, watching his flustered exit, murmured, “Why does he seem so distracted tonight?”
Meanwhile, Ji Fei and the others were dying of laughter.
Especially Ji Fei, who thought Qin Xian’s timing was coincidental and hilariously perfect. "That’s what you get for trying to trick people. No rest for you tonight, ha!"
Qin Chao and Qin Rong, however, were convinced Qin Xian’s moves were deliberate and silently gave him a thumbs-up.
This time, Qin Jing called twice before the other end finally picked up.
The voice was noticeably out of breath.
“What are you doing?” Qin Jing asked, puzzled.
“Rushing… to answer your call,” came the reply.
Qin Jing’s heart softened immediately, and he shared Qin Xian’s suggestion about the medical resources.
There was another pause. Everyone wondered what excuse Wen Bo would come up with this time.
Suddenly, Wen Bo’s voice, disguised as a woman’s, turned angry. He accused Qin Jing of not trusting him and trying to control him. “I already told you I don’t want to meet right now! Your insistence makes me feel suffocated. I hate it. Let’s take a break and not contact each other for a while. It’s better for both of us!”
The words sounded like a breakup.
Qin Jing panicked and immediately apologized, but the “woman” hung up decisively. After that, no matter how many times he called, the phone wouldn’t connect again.
Qin Jing sat there, stunned, looking aggrievedly at Qin Xian.
Qin Xian: …
Outmaneuvered.
