After Betrayal: Lightning Marriage to Mr. Enigmatic

Chapter 961: Jinx

Chapter 961: Jinx

But she couldn’t explain this to Ryker; otherwise, he would suspect she had also planted a bug on him and might even guess her true profession—Isabella Weaver’s private detective."Let’s go up, it’s almost dawn. How long have you been digging here? Let me see your hand, I saw it bleeding earlier!"

Ryker didn’t show her; he picked up the pickaxe, bypassed Zoe, and was about to continue digging coal.

Zoe was so frightened that she hurriedly grabbed his wrist.

Ryker instinctively tried to shake her off but tried twice without success.

He frowned, "I told you not to touch me, are you deaf or just stupid?"

"Neither works!"

Zoe clutched his hand with both of hers, refusing to let him dig coal anymore.

Anyway, let him scold her. She’d use her shameless skills to cling to him!

Perhaps today’s matter was partly her responsibility; she couldn’t let Ryker exhaust himself to death digging mines here.

Once they were on the ground, she wouldn’t bother with him anymore.

Zoe shook his hand persistently, using all her charms to plead, "Ryker, Ryker, be good, let’s go up, I’ll cook something delicious for you, carrot corn rolls, small whitebait, spicy chicken, mushroom and scallop soup, okay? Okay? Ryker..."

Ryker felt goosebumps as she called his name; he was both softened and irritated.

However, he didn’t know if she only coaxed him like this or everyone else too.

She said she had only hugged him, but that was a lie; she had no idea how many people she had hugged.

He gently put his arm around her waist and said softly, "Shut up, stop shouting."

Though his action was gentle, Zoe still froze for a moment.

In fact, she hadn’t lied to him; she genuinely hadn’t been close to other men. During the day, linking arms with her cousin at her uncle’s house was her limit.

Being held by a man and pressed against his body was a first for her.

Zoe couldn’t figure him out.

Did he like being held, or did he not like it?

How could men be such complicated creatures?

But Zoe didn’t resist, nor could she at this moment. She followed suit and hugged Ryker’s waist, continuing to coax him: "If you go up and stop digging coal, I won’t shout anymore. Otherwise, I’ll keep shouting. It’s too dangerous here, look at the lights above, they’re constantly flickering, what if it collapses..."

She hadn’t finished her sentence when a few workers seemed to have hit something, and with a loud rumble, a cave-in occurred!

These men seemed quite experienced with collapses and quickly ran to the other side of the mine to hide, while the mine on Ryker’s side was completely blocked.

Zoe was scared, burrowing into Ryker’s embrace, and he instinctively protected her, moving to a relatively safer place.

When the tremors of the cave-in stopped, he tapped her forehead: "Jinx."

Zoe wasn’t sure if her fear-induced hallucinations had made her imagine it, but she felt a trace of warmth and affection in Ryker’s words.

Terrified, she asked, "What now, what now? Are we going to die here?"

Her head was still nestled against his chest, her soft hair brushing against Ryker’s chin, making him feel itchy.

The mine’s lights had all gone out; it was pitch black around them, but the faint voices of workers talking in the other mine could be heard.

He held Zoe tightly and gently consoled her: "Don’t be afraid, it’s okay. I’ve been buried before and survived."

This time, Zoe was sure she wasn’t imagining it; he was indeed speaking to her in a gentle tone!

She burst into tears: "Oh no, we’re definitely going to die, it’s the end of the world, that’s why you’re finally speaking nicely to me!"
