And so it was—he drank more and more, unable to stop.
Chenxing sat beside him, trying every way to persuade him, but he paid no attention to any of it.
In the end, Chenxing stopped trying to talk him out of it.
"Fine, drink. Maybe if you get drunk, you won’t feel so awful anymore." As she said this, she poured herself a cup as well, taking a small sip. Chenxing was someone who knew her limits and didn’t dare to drink much, only symbolically keeping him company.
Time ticked away, slowly and quietly, the liquor in the bottle diminishing bit by bit, while Hua Hua’s face grew progressively more flushed.
The rosy hue on his cheeks spread subtly, becoming inexplicably beautiful.
Just then, drunken and dazed, he suddenly started laughing. But before long, while laughing, tears rolled down his face. He kept wiping at them with the back of his hand—wipe once, drink once.
The air in the room was thick now, his mix of crying and laughing turning the atmosphere into something painfully convoluted.
"Chenxing, do you know? I always thought I’d follow my brother through life, all the way until we’re old. But now you tell me, if he’s gone, what should I do from now on?"
Chenxing was caught up in the sentiment behind his words, tears unknowingly spilling from the corners of her eyes.
She didn’t know exactly how deep the bond was between Hua Hua and Shaocheng, but she had long stopped pondering what she would do if Shaocheng were gone. She’d already made up her mind, engraving their fate on the Stone of Three Lives, their hearts united forever, through heaven and earth.
Suddenly, the phone on the table rang. Hua Hua, still drinking, picked up the phone and answered it. His voice, typically sweet, now carried the faint rasp of alcohol: "Who... Hello?!"
Chenxing couldn’t discern what was said on the other end of the call, but Hua Hua barked into the phone with a coarse, angry tone, "You crazy bastard! Even if you cry, I won’t cry!"
He immediately followed up with a stream of curses: "Go to hell!!!!"
Then Hua Hua hung up. Chenxing asked curiously, "Hua Hua, who was it?"
"Some lunatic trying to hit on me, keeps changing phone numbers to harass me," he said, the expression on his face full of disgust. He curled his lip. "Fuck his damned grandmother, thinks he can woo me? Not even in his next life!"
Chenxing chuckled at his words, pulling out a tissue and offering it to him. "Wipe your face."
His face was streaked with tears.
Hua Hua waved it off, instead using the back of his hand to wipe. But no matter how he wiped, the overwhelming flow of tears, unleashed by his broken heart, refused to stop. The bottles on the table were all empty, yet he still craved more. He steadied himself against the floor and, swaying, stumbled toward the staircase.
Chenxing stood up and watched his retreating back. "Hua Hua, what are you doing?"
He turned his head, flashing her a mischievous grin, blinking like a playful kid. Raising a finger to his lips, he made a shushing motion. "I’ve hidden away lots of good booze upstairs. Don’t tell my brother—I stole all of it from his wine cabinet. Shhh..."
"You can’t even walk straight. Don’t go fetch more. Let me make you some sobering tea, then you lie down and sleep for a bit." Chenxing walked over, grabbing onto his arm to steady him.
Hua Hua yanked his arm away forcefully, nearly causing Chenxing to fall. He reached out just in time to catch her, tapping her nose with his finger. Leaning forward slightly, he belched, the smell of alcohol spilling directly onto Chenxing’s face. "No way! I want to drink—I *have* to drink! You’re not allowed to tell my brother, don’t you dare let him know I’ve stolen so much of his liquor. Got it?"
