Chapter 20
Chapter 20
Chapter 20.
I sat up straighter, trying to look respectful but also curious.
"It better not be about those two pests," she said, her face turning cold again.
The mood in the cave changed instantly, and she glared at me. Her eyes seemed to glow in the dim light, making me regret opening my mouth for a second.
"No, no, no! It has nothing to do with them," I said fast, holding my hands up. I was scared she’d get even angrier.
I had no idea why she hated those two blue-tailed merfolk so much; they seemed pretty harmless compared to her.
I didn’t want to mention Artria or Gerin ever again if it meant she would look at me like she wanted to turn me into a skeleton too.
Her face went back to normal once I explained. "Alright then," she said, leaning against the wall. She looked relaxed, but I knew she could move faster than a bullet if she wanted to.
"What is it?"
I let out a big sigh of relief, deciding to chose my words wisely.
I told her what was bothering me, how I went crazy the second I smelled blood in the water and how I almost killed Artria and Gerin.
I described the feeling of my mind slipping away, replaced by a red fog that only wanted to hunt and kill.
To strengthen her trust in me, I threw in a few lies, like how scared I was that I would never be sain again if that feeling took over for good and wouldn’t be able to serve her properly.
But when I accidentally mentioned Artria and Garin, she frowned.
Feeling pressured, I skipped ahead.
Fortunately for me, when I got to the part where I described almost killing them, especially Artria, a small, dark smile appeared on her face.
It was a look of pure satisfaction, like she was proud of me for being a monster.
It gave me the creeps. ’Is she really that happy to see me almost kill another woman?’ I wondered.
I guess she was just very possessive of her things. She didn’t want me talking to others, and she definitely didn’t want me being nice to them.
"If you’re worried about losing your mind, don’t be," she said, sounding bored. "You just haven’t learned how to control your new body yet."
"You have the instincts of a predator now, but you still have the slow mind of a human. Your human side is weak and doesn’t know how to handle the power of the shark."
"It’s like a child trying to ride a giant wave, you’re going to fall until you learn how to balance yourself."
"It should take you some time to get used to your new senses, but then again, you shouldn’t have to worry." She smiled a little at this point, a smile that no doubt looked ominous. "As long as you stop running off on your own and act like a good little dogfish by your mistress’s side, it shouldn’t happen again. My power will keep your wild side quiet until you’re strong enough to do it yourself."
"I... I see." While I already expected an answer like that, it was still really hard to accept. To think my life was now tied to this woman was a lot to take in.
And as for learning to control my new shark side... I felt like that would take a long, long time.
I was basically a ticking time bomb, and she was the only thing keeping me from exploding.
It wasn’t exactly a great way to live, but I didn’t have much of a choice.
"Well, I’m off to rest," she said, stretching like a cat before laying down on the cold stone floor.
She didn’t seem to care about the hard ground or the skeletons nearby. She just closed her eyes, looking perfectly peaceful.
"Sleep well, Mistress," I said, nodding. But inside, my heart was thumping. ’If she’s going to sleep and she’s actually tired... maybe I can finally get out of here.’
Yeah she just told me how I couldn’t survive without her, but so what?
Even if it took me years to get used to this monster body of mine, so long as I was free from her control, I didn’t mind.
I’d control it eventually, wouldn’t I? But if I was stuck here, forget controlling it, I wouldn’t even be able to use it.
I looked over at the dark pool of water. I could almost feel the freedom waiting for me outside. I just had to be quiet. Very, very quiet in order to make my escape.
"And where do you think you’re going?" she asked with a frown, her eyes still closed. It was like she had a sixth sense for when I was thinking about leaving.
"Nowhere, mistress—" I started, but she cut me off.
"As a good little dogfish, shouldn’t you sleep when your mistress does? Or are you planning on running away while I’m asleep?" She opened her eyes a silver and gave me a flat look as if she had seen right through my plan.
Her eyes were sharp, and there was no way I could lie to her.
’ Is this what they call a woman’s intuition...’ I felt my hopes being dashed right now, why was it so hard to escape from this woman!
She suddenly tapped the floor right next to her. "If I’m going to sleep, so are you. I’m not letting you out of my sight."
"Alright, mistress," I said with a weak smile, getting ready to lie down a few feet away.
I figured I would just wait until she was in a deep sleep and then try my luck.
But sadly , my plans would never come to fruition, because she started tapping the floor right in front of her.
"What?" I asked, totally confused.
"You’ll be sleeping right here," she said, looking at me with that same firm expression.
’Wait, isn’t that...?’ I was nervous because she wanted me to sleep right next to her chest.
It was way too close. I could feel my face getting hot.
