Chapter 253: Tang Yanqi, Let’s Have a Child (Part 5)

Watching the silhouettes of Mrs. Sheng and Mr. Sheng disappear at the end of the corridor, Tang Yanqi was about to turn back when suddenly her vision went dark. She found herself being pulled into Sheng Jianan’s embrace. Tang Yanqi froze for a moment, then quietly looked up, only to see Sheng Jianan’s tightly furrowed brows. Even with his eyes closed, Tang Yanqi could somehow sense his pain.

Her hands, which originally intended to push him away, gradually lowered, letting Sheng Jianan hold her.

After a long time, Sheng Jianan finally let her go, placing a hand on her head and gently ruffling her hair. This normally flamboyant man suddenly smiled: "I’ll be at the hospital today, you can go back."

It was a gentle smile that made Tang Yanqi’s heart flutter. He must have been terrified by Mr. Sheng’s condition. After all, illness and death are inevitable, but if an accident caused by someone else’s carelessness leads to a problem, that would be unjust.

Leaving the hospital, Tang Yanqi glanced back. Sheng Jianan had invited her to dinner today, but things turned out this way. She hadn’t eaten, and surely neither had he. After a moment’s hesitation, Tang Yanqi walked to a small nearby restaurant and ordered two takeout meals. She knew Sheng Jianan wouldn’t eat such food, but it was all she could afford for now.

Carrying the meal boxes back, when she was near the hospital entrance, Tang Yanqi unexpectedly saw the maid who had begged Sheng Jianan to spare her was still lingering at the entrance, seemingly waiting for someone.

A hint of confusion flashed in Tang Yanqi’s eyes. Logically, if Sheng Jianan wasn’t holding her accountable, she should have left without delay. If the Sheng Family changed their minds, she would be in big trouble. Why was she still here?

The maid noticed Tang Yanqi and hurried over: "Young Madam, thank you, thank you so much."

Tang Yanqi smiled gently: "You’re welcome, why haven’t you left?"

"I was about to leave, but I wanted to thank the Young Madam in person. I’m planning to return to my hometown and leave B City. I thought I might never see you again, so I wanted to express my gratitude face-to-face."

The maid spoke and bowed deeply to Tang Yanqi. She was a lot older than Tang Yanqi, and such a gesture made Tang Yanqi feel a bit uncomfortable. She was not used to such things, not being a wealthy lady herself.

Tang Yanqi reached out to help her up: "No need for that. I believe you didn’t do it on purpose. Just be more careful in the future."

Tang Yanqi rarely spoke so much to strangers, but today she saw a bit of herself in this woman, both having faced moments of near despair, a shared sense of vulnerability.

The maid nodded vigorously, her eyes slightly red: "Yes, I’ll remember your words, Young Madam. I just don’t know what’s been wrong with me lately, always feeling sleepy. Today, when I was taking Mr. Sheng out to enjoy the sun, I dozed off and didn’t notice the steps."

The reason for her mistake was of little concern to Tang Yanqi. She listened to the explanation but didn’t dwell on it, and walked back to the hospital carrying the meal boxes.

Sheng Jianan was still leaning against the corridor wall, a cigarette in his hand, though unlit. When he saw Tang Yanqi approaching, he was surprised: "Why are you back?"

Tang Yanqi wanted to say "I brought you some food," but when the words reached her lips, they felt odd. She forced a smile: "Let’s eat."

The cheap takeout food emitted no appealing aroma even when the boxes were opened. Sheng Jianan frowned. Tang Yanqi hadn’t been too bothered by it initially, but seeing his expression, she flushed a bit and instinctively said: "This is all I could find nearby."
