Chapter 35: Day 6: Crisis and Gift
Chapter 35: Day 6: Crisis and Gift
Wasteland Day Six.
Bang bang... Clatter clatter...
As Yu Yuan broke apart the quick-dry cement, re-exposing the sewer exit, he dropped the huge rock he was carrying onto the ground.
"Miscalculation. Back then I only thought about how to block the exit securely, why didn't I think about getting a hammer?"
This was something Yu Yuan only realized when preparing to break the seal.
His melee weapons were down to just the Kukri; the rest were either firearms, a folding hand crossbow, or bows and arrows.
He simply lacked any tool capable of damaging quick-dry cement. He did have an adjustable wrench and a pipe wrench, but those tools were too small. After a couple of attempts, his hands were numb from the vibration, and the cement only suffered superficial damage.
In the end, with no other option, he had to swap for two large rocks to finally get the job done.
After clearing the exit, although the typhoon had passed, the sewer still had rushing water. However, it seemed that in a few more hours, once the accumulated water drained, it would be passable again.
A smile touched Yu Yuan's lips. Just as he was about to return to the shelter, his gaze suddenly froze, as if he had seen something.A few seconds later, a corpse, bloated and bleached white from soaking in rainwater, drifted past with the flow.
The corpse was incomplete. Its head was missing half, bitten off from the crown, and the brain inside was either lost or eaten by something, leaving it hollow.
The neck and shoulder blade were also half-eaten, with arms and legs all incomplete.
Yu Yuan narrowed his eyes, watching the corpse slowly disappear from view, countless thoughts flashing through his mind.
This corpse clearly didn't fall into the sewer from the surface; it was one of those scavengers or survivors hiding in the sewers.
This was something Yu Yuan had already suspected.
Judging by the corpse's condition, it had only been dead for two or three days. But what could have bitten it into such a state?
The first thing that sprang into Yu Yuan's mind was that investigation report he saw back at the East District Waterworks Center.
Thinking of this, he immediately returned to the shelter, retrieved that investigation report from the newspaper rack, and read it again.
Mie Mie approached Yu Yuan, glanced at the report a few times, then walked over to the corner specially prepared for it, paved with dry hay, and lay down.
Several minutes later, Yu Yuan let out a long breath, his gaze flickering uncertainly.
The direction the corpse came from, although there were many branching paths, was generally close to District 15.
And District 15 borders District 10. District 10 was precisely the district where that giant rat was discovered according to the investigation report.
"Could that rat really still be alive, and has even moved from District 10 into District 15, or even District 13?"
If that were the case, it would be troublesome.
Although Yu Yuan was very reluctant to think that way, the reality was right before him, and his personality made him unwilling to escape.
Regardless of whether that creature is the giant rat or not, it poses a huge threat to his safety.
The sewer is his main passageway and future battlefield for moving to other districts. With such an unstable factor present, he couldn't sit still!
A flash of ruthlessness passed through his eyes.
He glanced again at Mie Mie lying on the ground, then stood up and walked to a door. Opening it revealed a small room of about two square meters, where all his supplies were neatly arranged.
This was the Level 1 [Warehouse] he built during the two days he was hiding from the typhoon. The area was only two square meters, but these two square meters were additionally added, not occupying the original area of his shelter.
Although the space was small, it provided a place to store all the supplies.
He scanned the row of weapons placed in the corner, thought for a moment, then took out the FN FAL Assault Rifle along with its equipped magazines and ammunition.
——Caliber is truth!
This was Yu Yuan's principle, and also why he didn't choose the MP5.
Although the MP5, as a submachine gun, had a fast rate of fire, Yu Yuan wasn't even sure if the 9×19mm pistol cartridge could penetrate the creature's fur. After all, this is the wasteland world; it wouldn't be strange at all for the creatures here to have undergone some mutation.
Although he didn't know exactly how huge that rat was, under large caliber, all living beings are equal.
With 7.62×51mm caliber bullets, as long as it's a carbon-based life form, there's nothing that can't be taken down.
This gun, or rather all the guns in the warehouse, had been carefully cleaned and maintained by Yu Yuan over the past two days, at the cost of nothing more than a bottle of Gun Oil worth 1000 survival points.
He just didn't expect that the freshly maintained weapons would come in useful so soon.
He loaded all the bullets into the magazines. There were three magazines in total, each with a capacity of 20 rounds, making 60 rounds altogether, which should be enough.
If 60 rounds couldn't take down that rat, Yu Yuan estimated he'd probably be done for anyway.
After that, he prepared 3 M64 Grenades, just in case.
He also took out that M500 revolver. The .500 caliber bullets would be his final guarantee.
Another half day passed. The sewer floor was finally visible, covered in a layer of silt, emitting a rotten smell. Although the ground was still damp, after Yu Yuan went down to test it, it didn't hinder movement.
He was also preparing to go out to check the situation after the typhoon and search for supplies to upgrade the shelter.
Because of the typhoon, the shelter's construction had already been delayed for two days. The Newbie Protection Period would end in another 24 days, so he had to make up for these two lost days.
Returning to the shelter, Yu Yuan opened the virtual panel – Fate Cards.
"Since I can leave now, it's time to choose the Fate's Gift."
Yu Yuan's gaze towards the Fate Cards page shimmered with eager light.
Over the past two days, he had also wondered what items might appear in this Fate's Gift. Now he could finally unveil the mystery.
When Yu Yuan formed the thought to draw a Fate Card.
That familiar line of text appeared again.
——Maxim: All gifts from fate have their price secretly marked in advance.
This subtitle quickly transformed into three options.
[Choose one from the three Fate's Gifts below as the gift fate bestows upon you.]
Yu Yuan took a deep breath.
"Here it comes!"
——Stylish Floor-standing Coat Rack
Function: Randomly produces one piece of clothing matching your size daily, with a chance for high-quality clothing.
——Resource Recycling Trash Can
Function: Daily converts trash placed inside into random resources, with a chance for double or special resources.
——Bountiful Vegetable Basket
Function: Randomly produces one type of fresh fruit or vegetable daily, with a chance for high-quality food.
"This...."
Looking at the three Fate's Gift options, Yu Yuan experienced choice paralysis for the first time.
It's too hard to choose.
He wanted them all!
The clothes he was wearing were practically developing a patina. Although he had collected some clothes before, they were either the wrong size or the wrong style. He couldn't very well climb through sewers wearing a trendy trench coat!
Besides, the season wasn't right either!
Resources – what he lacked most right now were resources. He was practically going crazy wanting resources.
Vegetables – he desperately needed vegetables. It had been 6 days in the wasteland world. He wasn't short on food – there was beef canned food, military rations, biscuits, and even a daily cup of High-Energy Sheep Milk.
But he lacked vegetables!
He hadn't been to the bathroom for several days; he was constipated.
Yu Yuan's face directly showed a pained expression as he irritably scratched his head, really wanting to have them all!
Taking a deep breath, Yu Yuan suppressed the irritation in his heart, forcibly calming himself down.
His eyes switched back and forth between the three options, pushing personal preferences and desires out of his mind, and considering things completely from the perspective of current survival and development.
His gaze finally locked onto...
