Chapter 280: The Battle Begins, The True Strength of the Aurora Animal Assistance Association
In a high-rise 730 meters from the battlefield.
Eagle Eye watched the distant fight through his scope.
From his vantage point he could just make out the six mechanical-augmented humans charging below, and he could also lock onto the four Cold Crow operatives flying in the air.
Beside him, Hyena acted as Eagle Eye’s spotter, reporting the situation into the Jackal group chat. A small screen in front of him displayed exactly what the scope’s camera captured.
[Hyena: Both sides preparing for direct contact, still observing.....]
Soon, information from Alpha arrived as well.
[Alpha: Good. Your mission is to lock onto Cold Crow. Let the others go if you must, but Cold Crow must die.]
[Shadow: Alpha, spotted a suspected Humpback Whale–Ascetics figure, at three o’clock, 450 meters. Three people in black cloaks......]
[Alpha: Good. Don’t alert them, watch distance and observation frequency......]
The Jackal squad methodically monitored the battle. On the battlefield, the mutated creatures that had surged out of Johnck Zoo simultaneously stopped moving and began to howl at the sky.
Their eyes instantly turned blood-red.
In the underground command center beneath Johnck Zoo.
Mona, Miller, and the Saint were watching the images on the screen.
“Detected Cold Crow preachers activating spiritual creature combat programming, L-type test subjects all entering spiritual frenzy and team-up mode.....” a technician reported.
Miller looked toward the Saint, and after the Saint gave a slight nod, Miller spoke in a low voice, “Assist the Cold Crow preachers, lock targets for the mutated creatures.”
The command room immediately erupted with staccato keystrokes.
On the screen, red boxes locked onto Blackfire, Bloodbone, and the four mechanical-augmented humans who were rapidly charging forward.
“Targets locked.”
Mona watched the screen and forwarded the images directly to Carmen and Alpha.
Before the operation Yu Yuan had already linked Mona with Carmen and Alpha; now that Mona’s data arrived, they all replied.
[Lone Wolf: Roger!]
[Alpha: Roger!]

On the battlefield, Bloodbone and Blackfire flanked left and right like two horns, charging toward Johnck Zoo down two separate streets.
He naturally noticed the abnormality in those mutated creatures.
“Blackfire, be careful! Something’s wrong.”
“Looks like the Aurora Animal Assistance Association prepared a big gift for us. We still know too little about them. But thinking these beasts alone can stop us is wishful thinking.”
There was a hint of contempt in Blackfire’s voice.
He moved fast, leaping across the street as three evidently abnormal mutated creatures charged him at high speed.
One was a five-meter-tall long-armed ape. With a few leaps it reached a lamppost, its eyes blood-red. Gripping the pole, it pulled with both hands and ripped the pole up, hurling it at the charging Blackfire.
Blackfire snorted coldly and stomped onto the falling lamppost, using it to spring himself upward.
But midair, a giant bat with a six-meter wingspan descended from above and opened its mouth toward Blackfire.
An invisible sonic attack erupted from the bat’s maw. The air between the bat and Blackfire twisted a little, rippling like water waves.
Blackfire was momentarily unable to gain purchase in the air, but he showed no fear. A faint blue energy layer shimmered over his body, and his right hand assumed a charged-punch stance.
A vicious grin tugged at his mouth as he suddenly unleashed his right fist.
The next instant, a light-blue beam extended from his fist, forming a multimeter-long light blade that pierced straight through the bat’s body.
Blackfire then swung his right fist upward, and the light blade cleaved the bat in two.
Blood rained down, staining a stretch of street crimson.
The mutated bat was dead.
But...
A massive shadow had already leaped down from a nearby high-rise and landed above Blackfire.
Blackfire recognized it and tried to dodge with all his might, but it was too late. Razor-sharp claws glinted coldly as they tore through his body’s energy layer, shredding the silver cloak on his back to bits.
The enormous force sent Blackfire flying into the building, kicking up a cloud of dust.
The figure landed on the ground. It was a mutated leopard.
Its claws shimmered faintly—obviously the reason its strike had pierced Blackfire’s energy layer.
The mutated leopard bared its teeth and prowled, eyeing the building where Blackfire had crashed.
The mutated long-armed ape, after a few bounds, had reached a junked car near the leopard.
Grabbing the car’s chassis with both hands, it began to spin the vehicle.
Under the ape’s monstrous strength, the scrapped car hurtled toward Blackfire’s position.
But not halfway there, a ghostly blue light detonated the car into pieces.
The dust at the building cleared to reveal Blackfire’s face, pressed and coiled to the extreme.
He slowly lifted his head and looked at the mutated leopard and the ape not far away.
A curve appeared at the corner of his mouth.
“Good. Very good. I didn’t expect your creature mutation tech has advanced this far......”
“Even better—now I’m more interested in you.”
No sooner had he finished speaking than he moved, charging at the two mutated creatures.
The mutated leopard and long-armed ape also lunged at Blackfire.
But just as they were about to collide, Blackfire abruptly changed direction and ran back toward the zoo.
The ape leaped, grabbed the high-rise, sprinted a few steps along it, then slammed down toward Blackfire, hands clasped into a hammer-like shape.
Blackfire had been waiting for this moment. As the ape jumped, he kicked forcefully off with both legs; his mechanical core whirred, and he completed an aerial flip, flying horizontally.
A mechanical oscillation blade shone with blue energy in his hand.
“Die!”
The oscillation blade sliced through the air. As Blackfire back-slid across the ground, the mutated ape exploded into countless football-sized fragments that scattered everywhere.
Blackfire was soaked through in the aftermath, and when the oscillation blade came into contact with the blood it emitted a sizzling “zzzt” noise.
At the same time, the mutated leopard reappeared like a shadow beside Blackfire and swiped its claws.
“Hmph.....”
Blackfire wouldn’t fail twice to the same move.
He twisted the oscillation blade’s edge and slashed toward the leopard’s claws.
