Chapter 937 - 935: Unsolicited Kindness (First Update)

Summer break quickly arrived, and Nuonuo finally completed her films and two endorsements. However, she didn’t feel much lighter, because the historical drama she aimed to surpass herself with was set to start filming in October. She knew very little about this genre of film and rarely engaged with it. Even though she had read the script several times and could recite most lines, she couldn’t find a sense of immersion.

The situation was worse and more difficult than she imagined.

However, she’s not the type to easily back down. Besides, she had already signed the contract and couldn’t just retreat; she could afford the penalty, but couldn’t afford the shame.

Tian Fang’s wedding was scheduled for mid-July. Nuonuo finished her exams at the end of June and asked her to gather a heap of well-received historical dramas, then gave her the day off to focus entirely on wedding preparations. The company didn’t intervene much, as Nuonuo decided to handle things via phone or online.

As for Nuonuo, she started retreating at home to watch DVDs wholeheartedly.

The Ji Family, a family of five, usually chose to relax by watching some sci-fi blockbusters together, but Nuonuo privately preferred watching literary films, sometimes with Da Bao by her side.

But recently Da Bao and Little Treasure were particularly busy; Nuonuo was mostly watching these historical dramas alone.

Occasionally, if she didn’t understand or found something particularly profound, she’d jot it down and call Teacher Tan or Luo Qingru to discuss.

She had also contacted Director Sun, but most of his films had modern realistic styles. As a result, he couldn’t offer much advice on historical dramas, so Nuonuo didn’t bother him after a couple of tries.

One day, Nuonuo was home and had given Aunt Guan half a day off. After watching historical dramas all morning, she felt hungry, went to the kitchen, and put the lunch Aunt Guan prepared in the microwave to heat.

The phone rang on the coffee table; Nuonuo answered it without checking who it was.

"Hello?"

"Si Han?" A familiar voice came through the phone.

"Ah, Brother Kai? Are you on vacation recently?"

Brother Kai would occasionally call to chat with Si Han, and sometimes arrange meet-ups with Director Sun and others for a meal or drinks.

Of course, these were not frequent, usually once every month or so. Nuonuo didn’t think much of it, and treated Brother Kai just like any other friend.

"Yeah, just finished shooting the day before yesterday; I threatened Brother Chao to give me a few days off," Brother Kai said lightly.

"Ha, poor Brother Chao!"

Nuonuo imagined the handsome Brother Kai acting spoiled; hardly anyone could refuse him.

While Si Han was still trying to imagine, Brother Kai continued.

"I had dinner with Director Sun yesterday, and he mentioned that you’re worried about your new drama. I’ve worked on two large historical dramas before; want to grab a coffee and discuss?"

Brother Kai was unusually enthusiastic, but Nuonuo declined without a second thought.

"But I promised Dad and Mom I’d stay home and watch the house."

This was merely an excuse.

Although Nuonuo wasn’t very aware of Brother Kai’s feelings towards her, she instinctively kept a certain distance from him, avoiding one-on-one meetings whenever possible.

Ever since the photos of her and Da Bao shopping at a furniture store were reported, she had become increasingly cautious. She knew both she and Brother Kai were popular stars, having been on-screen lovers before. If caught in a scandalous photo, it would bring unwanted attention.

If that happened, it wouldn’t just trouble Brother Kai, but her family would have to help resolve it.

"Alright then, let’s plan another time to meet up for a meal. If there are issues you discussed with Director Sun that remain unclear, you can tell me, and I might offer some advice."

Brother Kai in some aspects resembled Nuonuo.

Once he set a goal, he’d tirelessly strive towards it, like a stubborn ox who won’t turn back until he hits a wall. Thus, when he worked on those historical dramas, he put in a lot of effort, studying extensively beforehand, making him quite knowledgeable about classic historical dramas.

Of course, he rarely mentioned this to outsiders, who often just commented on his talent and good looks, ignoring the significance of his own effort alongside Director Sun’s support in his rise to fame.

Nuonuo couldn’t refuse his offer. Coincidentally, the film she watched that morning left her puzzled in many aspects.

With Brother Kai’s enthusiasm, she shared her questions, and Brother Kai seemed familiar with the film, listening attentively before sharing his thoughts and interpretations.

The two ended up conversing for over an hour, until Nuonuo’s stomach began to ache, reminding her of the meal still in the microwave needing a reheat.

Meanwhile, Brother Kai seemed unconcerned about lunch, thoroughly analyzing Si Han’s queries. Once Si Han understood, he finally stopped talking.

"Brother Kai, sorry for disturbing your lunch!" It seemed Brother Kai called to invite her for lunch; she declined but kept talking, indicating that he was as hungry as she was.

"Yeah, you should be hungry too; go eat lunch. If there’s anything unclear, feel free to call me; I’m quite free these days."

Nuonuo didn’t dwell on it, thanked him, and promised to arrange a group outing for food and fun sometime.

On the other end, Brother Kai hung up, only to have a cushion thrown at him by Brother Chao, who had entered unnoticed.

"Mr. Fang, are you really free recently? I didn’t know that? Didn’t you mention you have an endorsement to film this afternoon? Did I mix up the schedule?"

Brother Kai caught the cushion easily, tossed it aside, and headed to the kitchen.

"Haven’t you eaten yet?"

Brother Chao seemed quite surprised; knowing that Brother Kai was very health-conscious, except during filming he would manage his life systematically.

Hence, Brother Kai’s organized lifestyle kept his manager watchful, never expecting to need to bring lunch for Mr. Fang.
