Chapter 629 5: Rescue
Chapter 629 5: Rescue
"The target has taken the bait."
Shortly after the convoy carrying Su Ying departed, another group quietly slipped out of Polaris.
They took the underground pathways, which were constructed when Pasha's foster father ruled Polaris, creating numerous secret tunnels underground. Some were destroyed after the Corpse Ghost war, but others remain intact, with certain criminal organizations using these underground tunnels to infiltrate the outskirts of Polaris.
"There really is an insider in Polaris."
"I didn't expect Old Cotter to be bribed by them." Jie Se muttered with a cigar hanging from his mouth, his shiny bald head flickering under the light of the monitor.
He quickly extinguished the cigar butt and turned to his companion, saying, "Tell the fifth squad to prepare to close the net."
"Also, redeploy the forces from the settlement."
Although Jie Se holds a position within Polaris, he is somewhat of a minor leader. Initially, he led a group independently, establishing his own settlement in the wilderness. However, in recent years, life in the settlement has become increasingly difficult, prompting him to bring his people to join Polaris.
"The Academy's equipment is truly useful." Jie Se looked enviously at the satellite equipment in front of him.
Polaris is cooperating with the bionic faction of the Academy, and Pasha has left several contingency plans in place. As the Antarctic Group infiltrates Polaris, they are also secretly investigating the details of the opposing side, since in the Wasteland World, no one can be easily trusted.
"Do you need our assistance?" A beautiful woman with delicate features appeared on the monitor, wearing a pair of gold rimless glasses. She calmly said, "The Academy has a secret laboratory in Southern Cross and can dispatch a troop to assist you."
Jie Se decisively shook his head and replied, "No need. We can handle it ourselves."
He quickly issued several orders and then solemnly said, "Now, we just wait for news from Leon."
Having uncovered the relationship between the Antarctic Group and the Esoteric Cultists, the Brotherhood decided to take action.
In the past two years, the Esoteric Cultists have committed several insane acts, including sacrificing settlements with thousands of people. After triggering the so-called 'Gospel Advent' ceremony, everyone in the settlement became lunatic, and then there appeared mutant-like monsters of apparently non-human origin.
Meanwhile.
After speeding through the wilderness, the convoy carrying Su Ying and others left the sphere of influence of Polaris.
The headlights of the convoy in the darkness attracted some ancient Corpse Ghosts, which were dealt with by soldiers using heavy machine guns before they could get close. Occasionally, lunatics with brain damage were lured over, and the armored vehicles simply ran over them, quickly leaving behind a field of debris.
"I heard Beidou has almost cleaned up the Corpse Ghosts in the wilderness."
"They invented a device to lure Corpse Ghosts, capable of gathering them over tens of kilometers at once."
Two members of the Brotherhood were chatting; before Beidou sent people over, the Brotherhood also sent a group to the far East. What they witnessed there deeply shocked the Brotherhood members, prompting their leadership to decide on making changes.
Beidou.
In the Wasteland World, any entity worth mentioning has heard of Beidou's name, and importantly, Beidou has started external trade. This signifies they have restored their former industrial system, at least the critical parts, enough to produce and sell these materials.
But here in America, aside from firearms, other resources are undeniably scarce.
Even today, clean water is considered relatively expensive, and Su Ying knows many outside paupers still cannot access enough clean water.
The allure of Polaris to outsiders is precisely that, by becoming citizens of Polaris, they can purchase cheap purified water and living goods.
The convoy drove for an unknown distance.
Until they received news from Leon, at which point, the convoy turned towards the designated destination.
This operation was orchestrated by the Brotherhood, and Su Ying was merely bait. While she herself possesses the ability to take on legendary Death Claws alone, the Brotherhood does not wish for her to engage in any combat nor for her to encounter any accidents.
After all, to the Brotherhood, Su Ying is their most critical connection to a certain entity, who has also entrusted the Brotherhood to take good care of her.
"Get off the vehicle."
Soon, Leon appeared at the front with a squad of soldiers, and he smiled at Su Ying, patting her head and said, "Someone will escort you to a nearby safe base."
"Leave the rest to us."
Su Ying obediently nodded, saying, "Mmm. Be careful, Uncle Leon."
"Don't worry." Leon gestured an OK sign, saying, "I know how to deal with those Spiritualists."
The soldiers originally in the convoy disembarked to escort Su Ying, while Leon and his team boarded the armored vehicle, and Su Ying noticed the plump launchers shouldered by them. The girl's gaze scanned the surrounding group and quickly focused on one woman, who had long black hair, an Eastern face, wearing form-fitting combat attire, looking particularly competent.
"Hello." Su Ying spoke in Chinese.
The woman appeared slightly surprised, greeting back, "Hello."
"Are you from Beidou?" Su Ying spoke fluent Chinese.
"Yes." The woman seemed somewhat surprised, saying, "Your Chinese is really good."
"My father is Chinese." Su Ying smiled gently.
The woman was surprised upon hearing this. She carefully looked at Su Ying and said, "Overseas Chinese? No wonder!"
"No." Su Ying shook her head and said, "He said he is Chinese."
"From H City in the South."
The woman was taken aback upon hearing this, then revealed a thoughtful expression. Before she could ask more, a Brotherhood member signaled Su Ying to get into the car. Su Ying sweetly smiled at the woman and then got into another armored vehicle.
The woman watched Su Ying's departing figure and decided to report this matter after a moment.
Although they had some connections with Polaris, they really didn't know Su Ying's father was a Chinese person, and very likely not an overseas Chinese, which was quite interesting.
The armored vehicle carrying Su Ying drove off in another direction.
About half an hour later.
Su Ying suddenly heard a loud noise coming from afar. She turned and looked back; although she couldn't see the mushroom cloud rising, she saw a flash of light across the sky in the distance.
It was the explosion of the "Fat Man" nuclear bomb.
Beep.
A slightly relaxed voice quickly came through the communicator, slightly hoarse, "It's done."
"That guy was indeed tough to deal with."
"You shouldn't return to Polaris for the next two days. Stay at the Brotherhood's base for now; it's safer there."
"Once we handle those rats, we'll send you back."
Su Ying obediently replied, "Okay, Uncle Leon."
Leon quickly hung up the phone. Besides protecting Su Ying and cleaning up the Antarctic Group's people, he was also responsible for assisting the Beidou team. They had a bigger mission near the Atomic Sea.
Two hours later.
Su Ying was transferred to one of the Brotherhood's sub-bases. The following time was somewhat boring. Although she was well accommodated, she couldn't leave the base for the time being. Out of boredom, Su Ying could only browse some past records via the Brotherhood's internal network; her authorization level was high enough to access most of the intel.
Over the next day, Su Ying looked through the records about Beidou and learned about their development over the years, surprised by their rapid progression.
Curious, she also looked into the records of how her father and mother met, battling and secret experiments related to Southern Cross.
While Su Ying was amazed by these records, suddenly, the entire Brotherhood sub-base erupted with emergency assembly alarms, followed by a deep male voice coming from the internal communicator: "Emergency rescue!"
"All Brotherhood combat members from nearby bases, immediately proceed to the target area to support the special operations team."
"Escort the cargo to Southern Cross at all costs."
"Beidou's support squad is already on the way."
Amid the shrill alarm sounds, countless combat personnel quickly assembled, followed by the sound of armed helicopters taking off. Su Ying swiftly shut down the computer, donned her exoskeleton power armor, and rushed to the assembly point, then received shocking news.
The Brotherhood and Beidou's special operations teams encountered an unknown powerful enemy during their raid on the Atomic Sea. Though they successfully took the 'Gospel Book,' the special operations team suffered heavy casualties; now their mission was to rescue the special operations team at all costs to ensure the 'Gospel Book' reached its destination.
The other news made Su Ying feel sorrowful because Leon also perished during last night's action.
Leon was a High Tier combat member of the Brotherhood.
He was one of the earliest members to undergo complete bionic transformation in the Brotherhood, with strength ranking among the top in the entire Wasteland World, almost the pinnacle of current bionic transformations.
Such a powerful warrior also fell during last night's operation. His last communication to headquarters insisted on delivering the Gospel Book to a safe location at all costs, as it concerned the destiny of all humanity.
At this moment.
Su Ying had a very strong sense of Mind Sensing; she knew she had to take action this time because she felt something extraordinary in the abyss.
Without hesitation, she boarded the plane.
The head of the Brotherhood sub-base was a man of about fifty. He silently glanced at Su Ying, then quietly put on his power helmet, and sternly said, "Take off."
This rescue mission was ordered by the Brotherhood's highest authority.
Escort the Gospel Book to Southern Cross at all costs; besides the Brotherhood's various sub-bases, they also requested help from the Academy's bionic faction, with their support squad currently en route.
