Chapter 791 - 791 791 Find a Backing
791: Chapter 791: Find a Backing 791: Chapter 791: Find a Backing Since they were unwilling to stroll down the main streets, Gu Fan, Su Hui, Leng Le, and David had to tread down the alleys.
However, this time around, they were led by David who was familiar with the area.
Consequently, it didn’t take them long to move away from the trouble-prone area.
Once they reached a relatively safe location and had exhausted themselves from running, they decided to rest.
Leng Le immediately made a phone call to arrange for backup.
Gu Fan and Leng Le exchanged glances.
It was unexpected to them that they would meet at a place like this, and what puzzled Leng Le the most was the trouble that seemingly came out of the blue.
Just how had this happened?
She pondered over how she had received an SOS call from Gu Fan and was immediately attacked afterwards—the fact that Gu Fan happened to stay near her seemed too much of a coincidence.
Seeing the skeptical look on Leng Le’s face, Gu Fan quickly changed the topic, “Take a look at my ex-girlfriend.
I’ve done so much for you.
Even after you rejected my call for help, I didn’t just turn a blind eye to you when you were in danger.
This is, what’s it called again?
Oh yes, true love.”
Hearing this, Leng Le rolled her eyes and questioned, “Why are you here, Gu Fan?”
“Didn’t I make it clear on the phone?
I was in trouble, stuck in a city overseas and needed you to save me.
I just didn’t expect you to be right next door to me.
What was that one saying about ‘fate making people meet despite long distances’?,” Gu Fan responded with an air of casualness, even though he seemed a tad uneasy, which aroused Leng Le’s suspicion.
Gu Fan posed a counter-question, “What about you, Leng Le?
Why were you targeted?
Can’t you lead a peaceful life abroad without stirring up trouble everywhere?
That’s why we broke up—because you seem to enjoy causing commotion.”
Leng Le was fuming.
She felt wronged because she was merely there for vacation—take a walk here, shop there—she hadn’t provoked anyone, had she?
Suddenly, Leng Le noticed David.
She had seen him before; he was the one who had come to the Triangle Sea Area in search of the space-time door but was later captured by Qiao Ya and his men.
“Wait a minute, let me sort this out”, thought Leng Le.
She started to guess if the entire episode was actually Gu Fan’s fault.
She posed a question, “Gu Fan, you mentioned earlier that you were being pursued by a group of people in relation to the space-time door, which was why you sought my help.
I would like to know, who were those people chasing you?”
Caught off guard, Gu Fan hesitated and then replied, “I’m not sure of their origins.
They were definitely not good-natured people.”
Leng Le squinted, staring at Gu Fan.
The more she observed him, the more she felt he had something to hide.
So she challenged him, “If I remember correctly, Qiao Ya initially targeted this scientist in order to access the space-time door in the Triangle Sea Area.”
“Really, so what?” Gu Fan tried to remain calm, but internally, he was panicking.
Thinking to himself, “She sure caught on quick!”
“The people chasing you must be Qiao Ya and his gang.
Qiao Ya initially intended to attack you, but it seems they targeted the wrong house—inadvertently attacking me.” Leng Le’s voice trembled with anger, “I was just unlucky to be dragged into this for no apparent reason.
I’m even more upset that I had to be subjected to your banter after you came to my rescue.”
“What are you on about?
Don’t make wild accusations without any evidence”, Gu Fan vehemently denied the accusations.
After all, this was just Leng Le’s conjecture; as long as he didn’t admit to it, it wouldn’t matter.
“It must have been you who got me into this mess!” As Leng Le pondered over it more, her anger surged.
Unable to restrain herself any longer, she kicked Gu Fan.
Gu Fan didn’t dodge and rubbed the aching spot where he had been kicked, complaining, “My god, you’re becoming more and more ruthless.
Good thing we broke up early.
How could anyone live like this?”
Leng Le was so angry she didn’t even roll her eyes; she was waiting for the backup car to arrive so that she could bid her annoying ex-boyfriend goodbye.
After about ten minutes, a van arrived.
As soon as Leng Le got in, Gu Fan shamelessly followed her inside.
It was crucial to stick together at such a time.
Leng Le became displeased.
She blocked the car door with her hand and said, “Please, Gu Fan, don’t follow me.
I don’t wish to involve you.”
“Sorry, but you’re involved already.
Now we must help each other,” referred Gu Fan.
He removed the hand Leng Le had placed on the car door and headed straight into the vehicle, pulling Su Hui in with him.
David glanced at them.
He knew he had to adopt Gu Fan’s brazen attitude to survive this.
So he also squeezed inside the van.
Leng Le wanted to reject them, but Gu Fan interfered, “Dear ex-girlfriend, you can’t possibly be so heartless as to kick us out of the car, can you?”
Watching Gu Fan’s sincere act, Leng Le didn’t want to argue, although she was vexed.
She was unsure why she softened, but perhaps she still harbored feelings for Gu Fan.
Just as Leng Le was about to speak, Gu Fan beat her to it, “Driver, listen to David.
He will guide you.”
Leng Le protested, “You’re riding in my car, Gu Fan.
Don’t order my people around.”
“Alright, ex-girlfriend, I’ll listen to you.” Although Gu Fan complied with Leng Le’s request, secretly, he signaled David to start talking by tapping his shoulder.
David directed the driver towards their desired location.
Leng Le gave up protesting and sat quietly in her seat, acting indifferent towards whatever happened, she was done caring.
“How are we going to manage this?
Will we be discovered if we continue like this?” David was somewhat worried.
Su Hui felt that it wouldn’t be an issue.
If she were Qiao Ya, she’d only be on the lookout for people of Eastern descent.
But since both the driver and the co-driver were of Western origin, they wouldn’t be detected.
Hearing her logic, everyone felt more relaxed and bravely drove forward without any obstacles, departing from the small town.
Although they were safe for the time being, Leng Le who was dragged into the situation unwillingly, decided to maximise her benefits.
She glared at Gu Fan, causing him to feel a bit uneasy, uncertain of what his ex-girlfriend was planning to do next.
Leng Le proposed nonchalantly, “Now that things have come this far, I have no choice but to help you guys.
But, be clear about this, the benefits cannot be ignored.
That space-time door should belong to us.”
“Absolutely not!” David protested instantly.
Gu Fan gently advised, “David, you can’t protect the space-time door alone, and it will lead to disaster.
You need some backing.
I think the boss is your best choice.”
“I’d rather destroy the space-time gate than let it fall into anyone else’s hands,” David stated firmly, confounding Gu Fan.
If he didn’t satisfy Leng Le’s conditions, he couldn’t guarantee the safety of David and the space-time gate.
If he didn’t comply with David’s stipulations, the space-time gate would be gone.
“Both of you!” Gu Fan didn’t know whose thinking needed to be changed.
He was already seeking help from Su Hui through his facial expressions.
