Chapter 85

"W-What? When did he wake up? "

"A few minutes ago… I didn't tell you guys because his parents are talking to him now. I thought it's better to let them see him first, "

Rain quickly got out of his bed. "Can I—Can I see him now? "

Amelia looked at the boy for a moment before she nodded. She turned to Calvin and the beta instantly knew what she was trying to say to him.

He nodded before walking towards his mate. "Let's go see him, " Calvin said, taking Rain's hand into his.

Amelia stopped them all in front of the ICU. "His parents are inside. I'll go talk to them before letting you all in, " She said and went inside the room.

A few minutes later, Josh's parents walked out with her. They looked at everyone and gave them a weak smile.

"He's-He wants to see y-you all….. Please ma-make him happy… " His mother said before she broke down crying. Her mate quickly wrapped his arm around her

"I'm sorry, she's very emotional now…. You can go in, " He apologized and gave them a tight-lipped smile before walking away with his crying wife.

Keiran sighed. It was a heartbreaking sight to watch the parents walk away. They looked so helpless.

Rain quickly pushed open the door and went inside. He stopped when he saw Josh laying on the bed with a small smile.

"I was waiting for you all, "

"Josh!" The omega whimpered out as he ran towards him. Rain took his best friend's hand in his while he sobbed his heart out.

"Rain… " Josh called softly, weakly lifting his hand to caress the boy's cheeks. "Don't cry… "

Rain couldn't even speak or breathe properly. He was happy that Josh was finally awake but the unsettling feeling in his heart still didn't subside.

"Luna, "

Evelyn quickly wiped her tears and put on a smile when she heard Josh. "Yes… " The girl stepped forward.

"You saved our pack, "

"It's not me… we all did it, "

Josh smiled before his eyes turned to Keiran. "You must be angry at me, " He tried to chuckle.

Keiran looked down, his fist clenching in sadness and frustration. "You shouldn't have done that for me, "

"I did it for everyone… If you die, then the whole pack will have to surrender… Our pack put a lot of trust in us… I had to protect it," He smiled reassuringly.

Scarlett stepped in and gently caressed the boy's head. "You're going to be okay… " She bit back a sob.

"I'm not…." Josh sighed. "My wolf…. I can't feel him… His presence is fading out. I feel like I don't have much time—"

"Don't—Don't say that! " Rain cut off the beta immediately. "Please d-don't say that… " His voice cracked.

Josh could only smile while the tears poured out of his eyes endlessly.

"Rain…" He took the boy's hand in his and kissed it tenderly. "You know it, right…? Y-You know I love you… right? "

The omega broke down, his whole body shaking as he cried. He tried to wipe away his tears and heaved to catch his breath. "I-I….I d-do… I know… "

Josh smiled contently before he turned to Calvin.

Calvin was silently watching them. He didn't utter a word even though his wolf was going berserk that someone else was touching his mate. He knew the situation. Josh and Rain have always been together since they were children. Josh is very dear to his mate and he knew it. It would be selfish to ruin their moment.

"Calvin…"

Calvin flinched when Josh called him suddenly.

"I know y-you hated him before… but he's your mate. You're the one w-who should take care of him.…" Josh took a moment to catch his breath. "Rain is pure and selfless… If you hurt him anymore, I s-swear I'll haunt you d-down and—"

Calvin caught his friend's hand in a second and gripped it assuringly. "I'll take care of him…I swear,"

Josh smiled and nodded before turning towards the omega who was sobbing. "D-Don't cry… " He gently caressed the boy's cheek before something else caught his attention. "T-The necklace… you still wear it? "

Rain looked down, gripping the chain on his neck. It was a necklace Josh gifted him on his birthday. It had both of their initials as the locket. "Al-Always close to my h-heart,"

Josh took in a deep breath, tears rolling down his cheeks as he smiled. "I'm g-going to miss you so much… "

"S-Stop, you're acting like you're say-saying goodby—Josh?! Josh! What's happening?! " Rain shouted as he saw the beta heave. He felt Josh's grip on his hand tighten as he struggled to breathe.

"Amelia! Do something! " The omega cried out in panic and the rest of it all was a blur. He saw doctors and nurses rush towards the beta. The loud beeping sounds of the machines filled the room.

He felt Calvin's hand on his shoulder trying to pull him back from where he was but he refused to budge.

He could feel the grip of Josh's hand on his.

He was holding him tight.

He was holding on to life.

But then he wasn't…

The grip loosened.

The omega watched his best friend's hand fall to the bed.

Amelia and the nurses were pressing on his chest but there was no response.

The machines came to a halt with a loud beeping sound.

He saw Amelia's face.

She looked broken.

Someone hugged him from behind and pulled him to their chest.

A sob he was biting back escaped through the omega's lips.

He wanted to scream and cry out loud but he didn't have the energy. He felt so drained.

It felt like Josh took a part of him with himself.

The omega closed his eyes.

He shut them tight as he could, hoping for it all to be a nightmare.
