Chapter 620: What’s Inside, It’s Quite Heavy_1
"Happy Birthday."
Nathalie wasn’t good at saying these things, and after she finished, she awkwardly tugged at the brim of her hat, not quite knowing how to express herself.
Shawn, however, took the box she handed over and upon feeling its weight, looked up curiously and asked her, "What’s inside? It’s quite heavy."
"Nothing much, just a little trinket."
Nathalie hadn’t told him that inside was a raw gemstone she had gotten from Terrafina, a Pigeon Blood Ruby, quite rare; there weren’t many of this size in the world. After acquiring it, she kept it by her side for a while, contemplating designing a diamond necklace or something of the sort with it, but she had been too busy to find the time.
This time, upon Shawn’s birthday approaching, she searched through her drawers and took the gemstone out with her.
The gemstone was more expensive than the Small Pills she made herself, and besides, it wouldn’t be proper to give her own handmade crafts as a Birthday gift.
After much consideration, the raw gemstone became the best Birthday gift.
Shawn weighed the box in his hand, still curious, and asked her, "What kind of trinket is it, a Paperweight?"
He had a fondness for studies and traditional Chinese paintings and would occasionally dabble in them. Knowing this little hobby of his, Shawn’s first thought was that the box contained a paperweight for pressing rice paper, but then he looked at the size of the box, dismissed his guess, and hissed, eager to Open it right there, "It doesn’t seem like a paperweight, they aren’t this small. Nathalie, what exactly is inside?"
The reason he was so interested in the Gift wasn’t because it was a gift, but because it was given by Nathalie.
Before Nathalie arrived, he had already received quite a few birthday gifts, but none had caught his attention like this.
He had politely accepted all of them, allowing them to be placed in the guest room reserved for gifts, without any interest in looking at them.
Nathalie pocketed her earphones and looked up to see him keen to tear into it; she reached out a hand to stop him, saying, "It’s just a small trinket, not worth anything. Wait till we get back to see it."
"..." Shawn had already opened it halfway when he heard her say this, and catching her expression, he mistook Nathalie’s intentions, thinking she had forgotten about his birthday and had hastily bought some handicraft outside as a gift, and now she was too embarrassed to let him Open it in front of so many people.
Shawn himself wasn’t particularly driven by money; he didn’t care about how precious a gift was, what mattered more was who gave it.
But Nathalie was still young after all, and it was normal for young people to have thin skins.
He didn’t insist on prying the box open to see the contents any longer, and with a resigned smile he said, "You girl, are you actually worried I’d look down on your gift? Am I that kind of person?"
"... That’s not what I meant."
Her eyebrows slightly furrowed, she bit her lip, saying only, "It’s not anything valuable, better to take it back and look at it there."
Shawn glanced at her, his laughter dying away as he shook his head helplessly and tucked the box away, "Alright, alright, I’ll listen to you. I’ll look at it when I get back! You really are something. No matter what you give me, even if it’s just a blade of grass, I wouldn’t look down on it. At my age, do I really need an expensive gift from you to be happy? Just having you come to celebrate my birthday with me, hearing you wish me a happy birthday, what more could I ask for?"
He had quite the misunderstanding!
A twitch formed at the corner of Nathalie’s mouth; she didn’t explain that she wasn’t worried about Shawn looking down on the gift, but rather that she was concerned about him opening the box in front of so many people.
Letting some unscrupulous individuals see the Pigeon Blood Ruby inside the box could lead to unnecessary trouble.
