Chapter 494: Love After Going Through Thousands of Sails
The two red booklets never made it into her hands; they were directly taken away by Ignatius Leclair’s assistant.
Delphine watched the marriage formalities get completed within a minute. The two staff members left in a hurry, as if fleeing, and in the blink of an eye, tears rolled down her cheeks, dripping onto the man’s tiger-mouth grip.
Ignatius Leclair’s tall figure suddenly trembled. He reached out and touched the corner of her eye—it was wet; she was crying.
For an instant, the man’s mind went blank, as a sharp pain squeezed at his heart.
"I’m sorry," he apologized in a raspy voice, his tone low and coaxing. "If you’re upset, you can hit me to vent your feelings."
After finishing, he loosened the large hand that had been firmly gripping her. His handsome face lowered, and in that moment, he realized that the two of them were now irrevocably tied together. Since his mother’s passing, he had never found another person for whom he was willing to go through such lengths to establish a connection. He resolved to care for her, cherish her, love her, and give her all of himself.
Delphine felt even worse hearing his words and slapped him hard across the face. The man’s handsome visage instantly turned slightly red.
Her heart ached even more at the sight. How could she have brought herself to hit him—the perfect, dignified heir of this noble family? She used to love him so deeply. Why did this marriage come only after all the trials and tribulations, only when she had abandoned all hope?
Tears streamed down her face. Since becoming pregnant, things had spiraled out of control, heading in a direction she could never have foreseen.
"If you truly liked me, then why did you do those things back then? Why did you ignore me for five years? Why did you let me wander alone through life, drifting in despair?" Why, when she loved him so deeply, did he trample on her sincerity and shatter all her emotions? Why, now that she has given up everything, does he offer her hope once again?
She was not his pet—something he could cherish at his whim and discard when he grew tired. She was a living, breathing person with feelings.
Ignatius Leclair’s broodingly handsome face darkened. Seeing her cry so sorrowfully, he said nothing and swept her up into his arms, carrying her directly into the house.
Delphine cried until she was so exhausted that she fell asleep.
The man quietly fetched a warm towel and pressed it gently against her swollen eyes. Before long, the towel was soaked with her tears. Even in her dreams, she cried—sorrowfully and hopelessly.
Ignatius Leclair’s expression grew unprecedentedly grim. For the first time, he began to question his memories.
Delphine had always been calm and composed. If not for extraordinary circumstances, she would never display such emotional instability. The questions she posed to him—he could not answer. Why did he ignore her for those five years?
Should he tell her that, prior to last year, she had been nothing more to him than an unwanted burden from his stepmother’s household? That forcing her to become his bedmate was partly out of humiliation and partly because of his obsessive cleanliness—after all, since they’d already had history, she was preferable to an unfamiliar woman?
But this woman was like the most potent poison in the world. As they slowly interacted, he became irrevocably ensnared, without even realizing it.
Ignatius Leclair sat by the bedside, quietly gazing at her sleeping face, kissing her swollen eyelids. Who knows how much time passed before he rose, made a call to Maximilian, and whispered instructions: "Find me a psychologist who specializes in hypnosis. No one is allowed to hear about this."
On the other end, Maximilian agreed, clearly uneasy.
Ignatius Leclair hung up the phone, his handsome face cold and as unyielding as marble. He was determined to uncover every detail of his past with Delphine. Even if he had to rely on hypnosis, he would remember it piece by piece.
