Chapter 408: It’s Better for Us to Pretend We Don’t Know Each Other in the Future
Ignatius Leclair drove Delphine and the others to the hospital.
Delphine’s injuries weren’t too severe—mostly scrapes. The more serious issue was a fractured right arm, compounded by the emotional toll of her unstable Heart Realm, which made her internal injuries worse.
Ignatius personally oversaw the doctor conducting the paternity test for the two of them, and by the time everything was sorted, it was already dusk.
Beatrice Carter remained in the operating room under emergency rescue efforts. Other than Delphine visiting her, no one else from the Leclair Family kept her company.
Delphine ran back and forth between the operating room and the special care unit until Delphine finally woke up.
Father and daughter reunited, but Delphine was unusually composed.
"Originally, I wanted to find you and take mother’s ashes back to her homeland together," Delphine said softly while sitting in the hospital room.
Upon hearing this, Delphine’s tiger-like eyes reddened again, and he rasped, "That pendant with the seal, you must keep it safe. Little Rose said it was one of a pair—your mother’s and her sister’s. If someday you encounter the matching pendant, you may find the relatives on your mother’s side. As for Little Rose’s ashes... she loved her freedom. When I go out to sea, I’ll scatter them across the ocean. I’ll do the same for myself someday."
"Your mother left home before meeting me back then; she never talked much about her family. So, when she passed, I had nowhere to start looking for her," Delphine said regretfully. In those days, the young couple spoke more of their ideals and future possibilities, engrossed in the collision of their thoughts. Their families and backgrounds were barely touched upon.
Listening to this, Delphine started shedding tears. Her parents’ brief romance lasted only a few months, during which they were together for less than half a year before being tragically separated by death. One died young, while the other drifted away for over two decades. And the tiny baby they brought into this world survived through the stormy cracks of time.
"I recently visited the place where I lived as a child. I heard someone came by asking about me. Perhaps they’re relatives from Mother’s side. If fate allows, we may encounter them," Delphine said lightly in an attempt to comfort.
"All these years, I’ve failed you," Delphine said as he gazed at his daughter, thinking back on her years of hardship and mistreatment while living under others’ roofs. His heart clenched tightly. "Originally, I only returned this time to pay respects at the graves and restock supplies. Now that I’ve found you, I won’t return to a rootless life at sea. Delphine, what are your plans for the future?"
Delphine paused in silence before answering softly, "I haven’t thought too far ahead yet. The pressing matter is uncovering the truth behind Mother’s sudden departure back then. This means things with the Cloud Family will inevitably turn hostile."
"I’ll sort this matter out and give you and your mother a proper explanation," Delphine said grimly. If their family tragedy truly involved his older brother and sister-in-law, along with the Cloud Family, so be it if it ends in enmity.
"Has Mrs. Leclair pulled through the danger yet?" Delphine asked, thinking of Beatrice, as well as recalling last night’s sudden kidnapping, which made the sense of imminent danger surge. Beatrice was the sole holder of critical information—if he hadn’t learned of everything just before her incident, he might’ve died never knowing he had a child. And Delphine may have never discovered who her father was.
"She hasn’t pulled through yet," Delphine frowned and said. "I’ll go check on her again."
Delphine stepped out of the hospital room and saw Ignatius standing outside. The man’s face was shadowed with gloom as he was on a call. Upon seeing her come out, he quickly ended the call and approached her, speaking in a low voice, "I had the butler deliver two servings of porridge and supplements—one for you, and one for Uncle Cloud."
The man’s handsome face appeared calm, as if the conflict from last night hadn’t occurred at all.
Delphine replied coldly, "There’s no need for that, Mr. Leclair. Now that I’ve found my birth father, I’ll be moving out of the Leclair Family estate starting today. I don’t want anything from the Leclair Family; moving forward, let’s just pretend we don’t know each other."
