Chapter 400: The Squire Family’s Miss and her car plunged into the sea together.
Nightfall enveloped the world under a vast black canvas.
On the ground, the glossy black Buddha Beads lay there, solitary and untouched.
In the darkness, shadowy figures continuously invaded the building. Richard Shaw’s face had transitioned from initial shock to an unsettling calm.
"Boss, we’re already surrounded," Griffith Squire’s confidant murmured softly upon returning. This time, Richard Shaw had indeed been caught off guard. After the incident broke out, Griffith Squire had pulled back his main forces to preserve strength, leading to this isolated resistance.
Griffith Squire raised his eyes, the corners glowing faintly. His almond-shaped eyes narrowed with a smile that didn’t reach his heart. "So, it seems Major General Richard intends to pin us down completely today?"
Richard Shaw said nothing. He bent down to pick up the Buddha Beads on the ground. Having been paralyzed for years, what was an effortless motion for most took him five minutes to complete. Behind him, two officers stood upright, their eyes slightly reddened. They remembered when their Major General was the most brilliant military star of the Imperial City, with boundless potential. Now, even this simple movement drained him of strength.
The faint amusement in Griffith Squire’s gaze froze as he watched Richard struggle to pick up the Beads, relying entirely on an iron will to steady his lifeless legs.
The man’s rugged yet slightly cold features remained expressionless. When he finally held the Beads in his palm, it was as if he had clasped onto a lifeline. Richard Shaw spoke, the weight in his voice heavy and frigid: "It’s been over twenty years since those events. Right and wrong no longer matter. Those who’ve survived have paid a terrible price."
"If you truly belong to the Cox Family, you can stay in the South Seas. However, justice—or vengeance—for old grievances has its place. I hope you’ll always remember your ancestors’ honor and refrain from actions that would disgrace their legacy." Having finished, Richard made a gesture to the two officers behind him, signaling retreat.
Griffith Squire let out a cold laugh and replied at a deliberate pace, "Honor? The ancestors are all gone, long since returned to dust, ashes to ashes. What honor could there possibly be? Certainly nothing compared to the illustrious prestige of the Shaw family."
"Since Major General Shaw is choosing to spare this Cox Family remnant, wouldn’t it also be appropriate to withdraw the forces currently blocking my sister’s path?"
Richard Shaw’s body stiffened for a moment. He lowered his gaze. His firm and handsome features flickered briefly with uncertainty before he muttered softly, "Your sister?"
"My half-sister. From the same mother, different fathers. She isn’t a member of the Cox Family. Major General Shaw needn’t worry—she doesn’t know a thing about the past." Griffith interrupted him coldly.
Richard Shaw’s deep-set eyes closed slightly. A flash of obscure and indescribable complexity passed through them. Of course. His sister couldn’t possibly be Crystal Landon. Crystal was long dead, her body irrecoverable. It was his own demons gnawing at him, dragging him into delusions.
Major General Shaw lowered his gaze, a mocking smile briefly tugging at his lips before his voice turned steely and detached: "Swoz, withdraw the units blocking Miss Squire."
Swoz nodded, quickly sent out orders to Unit 2, and after receiving confirmation, hesitated before speaking softly, "Major General, Miss Squire’s vehicle drove off the port into the sea—both car and passenger."
Upon hearing this, Griffith Squire’s eyes turned bloodshot. He lunged forward, grabbing Swoz by the collar and roaring, "What did you just say?"
"Unit 2 is already down there recovering the wreck," Swoz choked out, struggling for breath.
"Move!" Griffith Squire shoved him aside and led his men, charging towards the scene.
Richard Shaw’s expression darkened, suffused with shadows. He commanded in a low voice, "Do whatever it takes. Save her."
The man’s unyielding and strikingly handsome features were shrouded in the play of light and dark, his gaze penetrating and profound. The Cox Family still had survivors. The direct lineage had died out years ago, but the Squire siblings appeared to be inconspicuous offshoots. Otherwise, it would have been impossible for them to remain concealed under his scrutiny for so long.
