Chapter 1095: Does Richard Shaw Truly Want This Child?
Richard Shaw watched her struggling with her crutch, her small face streaked with tears, the cigarette smoke swirling emptily in the corridor. His heart filled with unspeakable loneliness as he spoke in a low voice, "Luna, she has her strengths, and you have yours. You don’t need to feel inferior."
Luna Lawrence wiped her tears and sobbed, "Brother Richard, I want to go back to the Southwest Mountains. No matter how good this city is, it doesn’t belong to me. I don’t have a single friend here. Every time I come to find you, I just cause you trouble. I should go back."
"Nonsense. If you go back, I’m afraid your parents will sell you off again. Focus on your studies; that’s what’s important," Richard Shaw frowned slightly.
Luna smiled through her tears, shook her head, and said firmly, "That day Crystal Landon slapped me in the hospital. Honestly, I deserved it. I do like you, but I know I’m not good enough for you. I just want to watch you from afar, like a brother, to follow you with my gaze."
Richard fell silent when she mentioned Callix Lawrence. Years ago, during a mission, Callix shielded him with his own body from a deadly blow. Otherwise, he would not have been standing there unharmed.
In those years at the Southwest Military Zone, he took care of Callix’s only sister in his place. Perhaps the cold and solitary days in the Military District made those visits to the small town to see Luna the only moments of peace. In those moments, he wasn’t the last bloodline of the Shaw Family or a soldier carrying the blood of his ancestors. He was just an ordinary young man.
He wanted to give this lonely girl a great future, but unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be; he had missed the chance.
Richard spoke in a low, hoarse voice, "Luna, I’m already married. From now on, I’ll make sure your life is well-arranged. You don’t have to worry."
Luna burst into tears, sobbing as she said, "I know. I know you have your responsibilities. I won’t make things difficult for you."
The man extinguished the burnt-out cigarette butt and said heavily, "Let me take you back."
The footsteps in the corridor gradually faded away, and light shone through the slightly ajar door. Crystal Landon leaned against the edge of the bed, her face pale, her fingertips trembling as she gripped the sheets beneath her.
When Luna cried, she woke up. Having slept all afternoon, and being a light sleeper, the slightest disturbance could wake her, let alone a door that wasn’t closed, and Luna’s loud crying, as if afraid she wouldn’t hear.
She had always known Richard didn’t love her, but now she realized he didn’t even like her. He only felt responsible for her. The one he truly wanted to marry and protect was the woman outside the door.
He never called her, never asked about her preferences, disliked her smoking, disliked her arrogance, and disliked her assertiveness. Even in bed, he was domineering, taking what he wanted.
He spoke gently to Luna, but to her, he was always scolding and disciplining. He worried about Luna’s parents selling her off, but was indifferent to her life as if she was just an ornament brought home, a tool for carrying on the family line.
It’s truly hard for them, loving each other so much, sacrificing the happiness of two people for the sake of an outsider like her.
The child—does Richard truly want this child? Crystal felt as if she were in an ice cave, unable to stay in that hospital for even a minute longer.
She turned on the light, stumbled up, wrapped herself in a thick coat, took her phone and bag, and left the hospital room. Then she called Hawk Howard, and his line quickly connected.
She wanted to stay calm, to stay composed, but as soon as she spoke, tears fell, "Caspian, I’m scared."
