Early the next morning, Richard Shaw took the order to the Military District.
When Crystal Landon got up, she found her whole body aching. Although the man was considerate as always, applying medicine before he left, she recalled how he had been rougher than usual last night, and anger welled up in her heart.
Her affection for him was her own business; she was willing to act coy and affectionate towards him, but would not tolerate others mistreating herself.
Crystal Landon went straight to school after getting up. Upon arriving, Nova Howard came over to her, handed her a small hand warmer, and smiled, "Isn’t it cute? I dug it out from my grandmother’s collection, there’s only two, one for you, one for me, to keep our hands warm."
The small bronze pumpkin-shaped hand warmer had cloud patterns engraved on it, and was encased in a silk hand warmer pouch, making it both elegant and warm when held in the arms.
"How did you come up with such creativity? I hadn’t thought of using such things." Crystal Landon’s mood improved with the warmth of the hand warmer, and she smiled.
"I’ve been watching palace dramas lately; the Noble Consorts there love having these things. So, I went to my grandmother’s collection room to look for them, and sure enough, I found a pair." Nova Howard laughed, hugging her arm, saying cheerfully, "By the way, did you know that at last week’s New Year performance, there was a beauty from the Chinese department who became popular? Her name is Luna Lawrence. She’s good at singing and dancing, and many people are raving about her, almost putting her on par with you."
"Are there photos? I wonder how pretty she is." Crystal Landon asked with some curiosity.
Nova Howard, ever the gossip, quickly pulled up photos of Luna Lawrence. Crystal Landon looked and indeed saw a rare beauty, the kind of woman who seemed delicate and pure, the type men instinctively want to protect.
"She looks relatively nice, but how could she compare to you? Those people are really blind." Nova Howard said discontentedly, "They’re even calling her the embodiment of the goddess from the mountains. I’m the elf queen then."
"Is there an elf queen who eats as much as you?" Crystal Landon poked her on the forehead, laughing, "Why are you going up against her? You don’t even know her. Besides, it’s not easy for kids to come out from the mountains."
"But she’s riding on your wave of popularity. You gained fame at school last time because of that photo from the deep mountains and forests, and Luna Lawrence has one too." Nova Howard exclaimed with wide eyes, "She posted a set of photos on her microblog, taken about a year or two ago, also from deep mountains, just that yours had a helicopter and hers has an off-road vehicle. Those photos went viral."
Crystal Landon paused, somewhat doubtful, but quickly shrugged off the matter and parted ways with Nova Howard to go to their respective classes.
She made sure to attend two extra elective classes today, and called Grandma Shaw to say she wouldn’t be coming home for dinner. When she did return, she found out that Richard Shaw hadn’t returned either. Not only that, but he hadn’t come home for several days, nor had he sent any messages, and only through Grandma Shaw did she learn he was busy with his appointment and had gone abroad with his superior for a visit.
The anger in Crystal Landon’s heart seeped into her body, dissipating, leaving her feeling somewhat cold inside.
Previously, asking him to install WeChat was the same; she only wanted something convenient for communication. The man was torn, and after installation, she was nearly always the one reaching out to him, never the other way around. She shared her life and everything with him, and he accepted it gladly, yet never spoke a word about his own affairs.
She knew his thoughts were deep and reserved. But now they were husband and wife; did he intend to live like this for a lifetime, being partners in bed but strangers outside it, maintaining a respectful distance for the rest of their lives?
