Chapter 64 : Slime vs. Tentacle Monster
Chapter 64 : Slime vs. Tentacle Monster
“Bro, what the hell is this? Is this still a serious novel?”
Staring at the writhing black-and-red patterned tentacles at the bottom of the reservoir—and the grotesque skill list accompanying them—Russell felt a chill creep down his spine.
Rozelite was also stunned.
After a pause, she asked hesitantly, “Mr. Slime… is that also… a slime?”
“Tentacle monster! Tentacle monster! Tentacle monster!”
“Where the hell do you see a slime in that thing?!”
Russell nearly lost it. Sure, he himself didn’t hold much respect for the slime race, but calling “that” thing a slime? That was pushing it.
That said…
Its stats and skill list were undeniably impressive.
It didn’t belong in this world at all…
Subspace Creature?
This was the first time he had ever seen such a strange designation in the race column. It sounded vague, but intriguing.
“Worth a taste.”
“Rozelite, prepare for battle,” Russell said.
“Alright.”
Without hesitation, Rozelite gripped her sword and advanced cautiously.
When the distance shrank to about twenty meters, the tentacle monster finally reacted. Its tentacles, drifting like seaweed, suddenly surged to life, writhing toward Rozelite.
Rozelite didn’t retreat—instead, she pressed forward.
Her eyes locked onto the incoming tentacle, her body twisting as she thrust her sword. Though difficult underwater, her strike was precise. At the very moment the tentacle reached her, her blade pierced through it!
The tentacle convulsed violently, tremendous force traveling down the sword into her hands. Even under double reinforcement, she could barely hold on. As it thrashed, the wound split wider, spilling blue blood into the water, dyeing the surrounding area.
Rozelite opened her mouth. At the tip of her pale blue tendrils, compressed mana gathered, then erupted.
BOOM—!
A muffled explosion thundered underwater.
The shockwave blasted Rozelite backward and dispersed part of the poisonous mist.
The struck tentacle was severed.
But before she could even catch her breath, more tentacles surged from the depths, like serpents coiling around her ankles and waist. Others lashed at her head and sword arm with crushing force.
【Water Magic v7】
A powerful current burst forth behind her, dragging her swiftly backward and out of reach.
The tentacle tips grazed past her.
Meanwhile, the tentacle she had blasted earlier was already writhing. Flesh twisted and writhed at the wound, regenerating at visible speed.
BOOM BOOM BOOM—!
Russell unleashed a barrage of Mana Cannons, blasting every tentacle that came at her. Though flexible, they weren’t fast enough to dodge.
One after another, the tentacles were torn apart, their ends shredded into mangled flesh.
Yet even so, it barely mattered. The first severed tentacle had already finished regenerating, as good as new.
“Seems attacking the tentacles is pointless. Then… what about the core at their base?”
Russell kept his distance and aimed at the giant mass of flesh where the tentacles sprouted.
Several Mana Cannons detonated.
The entire reservoir quaked with the force, explosions shaking the labyrinth as though the world itself were being overturned.
When the blasts subsided, Russell glanced at the monster’s status screen, frowning.
【HP: 5920/5920】
【MP: 25570/29885】
No damage?
“That’s insane!”
Russell almost laughed in disbelief.
But then again, it made sense. Regenerating tentacles weren’t true weak points. As long as it had mana, it could regrow them easily. Worse, it had 【Magic Resistance v7】—the damage from Mana Cannon was heavily reduced, hitting for less than half its normal effect.
Most likely, it didn’t even have a conventional weak point. Or, if it did, it was buried deep beneath those regenerating, mana-shielded tentacles. Even blasting them apart was useless—they would regrow within moments, at minimal cost. With a mana pool in the tens of thousands, even an S-rank adventurer would be helpless.
And this was all happening underwater, in an environment tilted completely against them.
But so what?
“Your stats are impressive, sure. But too bad… I’m stronger.”
“Step back, Rozelite,” Russell said, excitement in his tone.
“I’m going to get a little serious.”
She obeyed, retreating.
In the next instant, four pale blue tentacles extended from her back, their tips glowing as they aimed at the monster below.
Sensing the danger, the tentacle monster went berserk. More and thicker tendrils surged upward, intent on crushing her immediately.
But before they could close in—
The four tentacles on Rozelite’s back flared with white light.
【Mana Cannon】 ×4!
BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM—!
Four Mana Cannons erupted simultaneously.
The incoming tentacles were obliterated, blue blood clouding the water in a spreading haze.
But it wasn’t over!
Another four tentacles extended from Rozelite’s back.
Now eight pale blue tentacles aimed at the depths, each glowing with compressed mana.
【Mana Cannon】 ×8!!
The monster reacted. Seven or eight of its thickest tentacles coiled together, forming a massive, pulsating wall of flesh to shield its core.
The Mana Cannons slammed into the shield. Flesh and gore burst apart, blue blood splattering in all directions.
Several tentacles were pulverized into scraps, blasted completely apart. Yet at the gory stumps, countless buds writhed and knotted together, rapidly regrowing new limbs as if racing against Russell’s assault.
Rozelite thought she heard a shrill, incomprehensible screech echo through the water.
“Damn, that’s interesting. But I’m not done yet!”
Russell’s excitement grew.
This was the first monster that could take such a beating. He had to go all out!
Another wave of tentacles surged from Rozelite’s back.
Now sixteen pale blue tentacles pointed at the monster, each one blazing with concentrated mana.
Eight tentacles was his limit for fine control. But for long-range bombardment? Precision didn’t matter.
【Mana Cannon】 ×16!!
