Chapter 312 - 1: The Girl Who Came to the Tavern_2
Jillian slyly whispered to Modoh: "This girl, is she planning to dine and dash here? It’s been so long, and she hasn’t paid. It’s just a glass of orange juice, right? If she doesn’t want to pay, she can just say it. With her strength, I won’t make things difficult for her."
Modoh glanced at her without doubt: "She can hear you."
Jillian quickly covered her mouth and looked towards the girl over there.
The girl blushed to the roots of her ears and shouted this way: "Excuse me, over here, I’d like to settle the bill!"
Now it was Jillian’s turn to blush. Whispering about someone behind their back is never a good thing when you get caught.
Jillian still had some pride.
She glared at Modoh.
Modoh sighed helplessly, then walked up to the girl: "That will be twenty copper coins."
The girl was stunned for a moment, then she took a purse out of her pocket and pulled out a Gold Coin.
"...I can’t give change."
"Then no need for change... Can I have another orange juice?"
"You can have five hundred cups."
Modoh accepted the Gold Coin.
He prepared another orange juice, and the girl downed the unfinished previous cup in a few gulps.
And so, one cup after another, until it was time for the shop to close.
"Boss, you can head home."
"You’re not planning to do something to that person, are you?"
"That should be my line, boss. I suspect she’s taken a liking to me. Given her strength, I’m afraid I can’t resist—maybe it won’t be long before we’re married."
Jillian looked speechlessly at Modoh: "You wish. You’re pretty good in this town, but compared to someone of her level, you’re far off. Your income might be in silver coins, but she drinks orange juice with Gold Coins. Can you imagine me marrying Lord Overlord? Isn’t that a dream?"
Jillian indeed left.
Only then did Modoh pour himself a glass of honey wine and come before the girl.
"So, esteemed Hero, Miss Ah Gela, what brings you here?"
"It’s been thirty-two years since I killed you. Why don’t you have any power? According to my estimate, you should have recovered all your strength."
"Does it make a difference?" Modoh took a sip of his honey wine, savoring its flavor, "As long as you are alive in this world, whether I am the Demon King or the tavern’s uncle, what difference does it make? Either way, I can’t beat you. Isn’t it better this way, anyway, like this, you’re not going to draw your sword against me, right?"
Gela stared at Modoh: "Decades ago, I had already returned the Hero’s Sword and Hero’s Armor. You might just have a chance."
"When you defeated me back then, did you rely on the Hero’s Sword and Armor? I think not, right? Such words might fool others, but saying them to me... isn’t that a bit too dismissive of me as a person."
Gela fell silent.
Modoh leisurely continued drinking: "So why did you come to me? Feeling bored?"
"Charlette was crowned Pope, Boguke wanted me to marry him before, but I don’t like him. I don’t want to become his political tool. Humanity is marching down the wrong path now, but I don’t know how to correct it. If I take action..."
"If you take action, your former Hero party comrades will all become your enemies. Humanity will become your enemies. Other races might not be your allies either—this is... is it really okay to discuss matters that decide the fate of the world in this countryside tavern? Doesn’t it feel a bit unserious?"
Modoh said with a smile, looking meaningfully at Gela: "Don’t you have other choices? Just like the model I once set for you, all you need to do is follow the things I did back then. I am the Demon King, and you can be the Human King. I think that’s not a bad thing."
"That’s not the result I want."
"Then that’s my answer." Modoh drank his wine dry and said to Gela, "That’s the answer I once gave to this world, my choice. So even if you come to ask me now, I can only give you this answer. What more do you expect? I have no other answers. You have already proven my answer to be wrong."
He stood up: "The tavern is closing time now, Miss Gela, it’s time to leave."
Gela stood up and left the tavern.
Modoh tidied up the place, then walked out of the tavern and found Gela standing outside.
He couldn’t help but frown: "What are you still standing here for?"
"I—I have nowhere to stay."
"With your speed, it shouldn’t take much time to return to the Royal Capital, to your residence, right?"
"I have no residence in the Royal Capital."
That’s how she replied.
Modoh sighed: "I’ve lived in this little town for over thirty years—well, fine, you can come home with me. At this hour, there shouldn’t be many people to see us. Hopefully, there won’t be any gossip."
So Modoh took Gela back to his home.
He prepared bedding for Gela: "Speaking of which, during the final battle, from what you said, I thought you wouldn’t step into my domain. Why did you change your mind?"
"...The Elf race said they have no more Elf Dewdrops, and I don’t want to grow old."
...Was it really for this reason? This girl, even as the Hero, is still a girl after all. Stepping into the eternal realm means she won’t grow old... it’s actually a quite reasonable reason.
"The Elf race doesn’t have extra Elf Dewdrops? They really lack face for you as the Hero? If it were me, I’d uproot the Elf Mother Tree. Let them know the cost of being disrespectful, but—it’s reasonable, I guess. I estimate it’s the Wise King Boguke who proposed to you, using your name to pressure the Elf Queen, causing her to resent you, right?"
Gela shook her head: "I don’t know."
"Heh~ Anyway, it’s okay to take you in, but you’ll have to face it eventually. The conflict will erupt one day. With the expansion of desire and ambition, everyone will want to rule the world. By then, you’ll have to face choices."
"That’s why I’m here."
"I said I have no answers here."
Gela didn’t respond. Her gaze was quite stubborn, making Modoh remember the time he was killed by this girl.
After all these years, her gaze had not changed.
"Oh right, you staying here, I’m going to charge you, whether for food or accommodation."
Gela directly tossed the purse filled with Gold Coins to Modoh: "How long will this let me stay?"
A heavy purse of Gold Coins.
"Long enough for you to stay until this body of mine dies. After which, this house can be sold to you." Modoh straightforwardly accepted the purse, "By the way, if you plan to go out tomorrow, leave that sword behind. Even without the sword, no one can do anything to you, right? It’s too intimidating like this."
The girl nodded, cautiously placing the sword on the ground, Modoh watching as a piece of his floor sank in.
Whatever, it didn’t matter.
He laid out a floor bed for Gela: "Tomorrow I’ll go find a carpenter to make a bed. For now, you just have to make do."
Gela looked at him puzzled: "Isn’t this bed enough for two people to sleep in?"
"...Are you serious? You killed me when you were just a teenager, so many years have passed, you should understand what sharing a bed with a man means, right?"
Gela stared at him: "If it would get you to give me an answer, then okay."
"So you’re using both money and seduction? You should know, that holds no temptation for me."
"But I don’t want to sleep on the floor; it reminds me of hunting you down."
"Then I’ll sleep on the floor."
