Chapter 9
Chapter 9
The air in the Moonfire Caves was heavy, thick with an ominous tension that seemed to press down on Lunara’s chest. The Lunar Talisman hovered before her, its silver glow pulsating like a heartbeat. Around her, the cavern trembled, loose stones falling from the jagged ceiling as the dark force beneath Blackridge began to stir.
“Lunara!” Thalric called, his voice sharp with panic. “Get away from it!”
Caidren stepped forward, his icy blue eyes fixed on her. “You don’t have to do this alone,” he said, his tone softer but no less urgent.
She turned to look at them, her heart twisting. Both men, so different yet so similar, stood ready to protect her even after everything that had happened. But their faces couldn’t hide the fear. They didn’t understand the pull of the Talisman, the way it sang to her blood.
Before she could respond, the shadows in the cavern seemed to thicken, twisting and curling like smoke. A familiar voice, smooth and laced with amusement, broke the tension.
“Ah, my Moonborn queen,” Ravoryn said as he emerged from the darkness. His crimson eyes glinted with triumph, his presence radiating an unsettling mix of power and menace.
Lunara’s stomach sank. “Ravoryn,” she said, her voice steady despite the dread rising inside her.
The twins immediately moved to flank her, their bodies tense and ready for a fight.
“You shouldn’t be here,” Caidren growled.
Ravoryn chuckled, a low, dark sound that echoed through the cavern. “Oh, but I belong here more than you know.” His gaze flicked to Lunara, softening in a way that made her skin crawl. “This moment has been a long time coming, hasn’t it?”
“What are you talking about?” Lunara asked, her hands curling into fists.
“Your parents’ death,” Ravoryn said, his tone suddenly serious. “It wasn’t an accident.”
The words hit her like a blow. She stared at him, her chest tightening. “What do you mean?”
“They didn’t die protecting the Talisman from rogues,” he continued, his voice smooth and calculated. “The rogues were working for me. I orchestrated the entire thing.”
Lunara’s breath caught, her legs threatening to give out beneath her. “You… you’re lying,” she said, though the sick feeling in her gut told her otherwise.
“I never lie, Lunara,” Ravoryn said, stepping closer. “Your parents stood in my way. They knew you were the key to the Talisman, and they kept you hidden for far too long. So I removed them.”
Thalric surged forward, fury blazing in his gray eyes. “You bastard!” he snarled, but Ravoryn barely spared him a glance.
“This is between me and Lunara,” Ravoryn said coldly. “The rest of you are nothing more than pawns in a game you can’t begin to comprehend.”
Lunara’s fists clenched as rage and grief surged through her. “You killed them to get to me?” she asked, her voice trembling.
“Yes,” Ravoryn said simply. “And it worked. You’re here, aren’t you?”
The twins stepped in front of her, blocking Ravoryn’s path.
“You’re not touching her,” Caidren said, his voice low and dangerous.
“Brave words,” Ravoryn sneered. “But unnecessary. I don’t need to touch her. She’ll come to me willingly.”
“I would never—” Lunara began, but Ravoryn cut her off.
“Don’t be so sure,” he said, his tone laced with dark amusement. “You’ve felt the Talisman’s pull, haven’t you? You know its power. And you know that without me, it will destroy you.”
She hesitated, his words hitting too close to the truth. She had felt the Talisman’s pull, the way it seemed to merge with her very soul. But could she trust Ravoryn?
“You have a choice, Lunara,” he continued, his voice softening. “You can destroy the Talisman and die in the process, or you can wield its power and stand by my side. Together, we could shape the world. You were made for this.”
Her heart pounded as she turned to the twins. Their expressions were a mix of fear and determination.
“Don’t listen to him,” Thalric said. “You’re stronger than he thinks. You don’t need him.”
Caidren nodded, his gaze steady. “We’ll stand with you, no matter what. You’re not alone, Lunara.”
She looked between them, her emotions swirling in a chaotic storm. Could she trust them after everything that had happened? Could she trust herself?
The Talisman pulsed again, its glow growing brighter. The cavern trembled violently, and the dark force beneath them stirred, a guttural roar echoing through the chamber.
“You’re out of time, my queen,” Ravoryn said, a smirk tugging at his lips.
Lunara stepped forward, her hand hovering over the Talisman. Her parents’ voices echoed in her mind, their warnings mingling with Ravoryn’s promises and the twins’ desperate pleas.
“Make your choice,” Ravoryn whispered.
Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes and reached for the Talisman.
The moment her fingers brushed its surface, the ground beneath her split open, a surge of energy erupting from the pedestal. A massive shadowy figure emerged, its glowing eyes locking onto Lunara.
Ravoryn’s laughter filled the cavern as he stepped forward, his crimson eyes alight with triumph.
“This is the beginning of the end,” he declared, his voice booming. “My Moonborn queen, your destiny is finally here.”
