Chapter 96 Wolves
Chapter 96 Wolves
Something was approaching, and he sensed it. Sylas slowly opened his eyes. His gaze turned toward the dense forest beside the road.
The others might not feel it yet, but through his expanded spatial sense, he could clearly detect a powerful presence rapidly approaching their direction.
And it wasn’t alone.
Multiple life signals were rushing toward them. Sylas frowned slightly. He quietly stepped out of the car. Not far ahead, the wind user and the water user were still clashing violently.
Boom!
The massive wave of water surged forward like a collapsing dam. The lady gritted her teeth.
"Wind shield!"
The wind around her erupted violently. A roaring cyclone formed in front of her. The crashing water tide smashed into the swirling wind barrier.
Boom!
Water splashed everywhere like heavy rain. Several spectators screamed and scrambled backward.
"Stop fighting!"
"Are you two crazy?!"
But the two ability users were completely absorbed in their fight.
The man laughed coldly.
"Looks like your wind isn’t enough!"
He stomped the ground again. Water from the roadside ditch rose into the air like a twisting serpent. It coiled around his body before launching forward.
The lady’s expression finally turned serious. She raised both hands. The wind around her began spinning faster and faster.
The air whistled sharply.
Just as both sides were about to unleash another attack...
"Stop."
A calm but firm voice suddenly rang out. Major Kyle stepped forward. His presence alone caused many people to step back instinctively.
The two ability users paused slightly.
The man frowned.
"Who are you?"
Major Kyle looked at the overturned car blocking the road, then at the scattered supplies beside it.
"You are blocking a military convoy."
The moment the word military was spoken, the surrounding survivors immediately became nervous. Only then did the two fighters notice the soldiers standing behind Major Kyle. Both of their expressions changed slightly. But neither wanted to back down first.
"These supplies belong to us," the man said stubbornly.
Major Kyle’s eyes turned cold.
"This road belongs to everyone."
"If you want to fight, do it somewhere else."
The wind lady crossed her arms. "We killed most of the zombies here, so these supplies belong to us."
Major Kyle stared at them for two seconds before speaking calmly.
"You have thirty seconds."
"Clear the road."
"If not, we will clear it ourselves."
His tone was not loud, but it carried unquestionable authority. The soldiers behind him immediately raised their weapons slightly. The surrounding survivors fell silent.
The water user clicked his tongue.
"Tch."
But before either side could say anything, Sylas suddenly stepped forward from the back. His eyes were fixed on the forest.
"Major," Sylas called out.
Major Kyle turned his head. "What is it?"
Sylas spoke calmly. "Something is coming."
Major Kyle’s expression immediately became serious. "How many?"
Sylas closed his eyes briefly. Then his brows slowly furrowed.
"More than ten," he replied.
"And they are approaching very fast," he added.
The moment those words came out, the surrounding people froze. Someone swallowed nervously.
"What... what is coming?"
Sylas opened his eyes.
"Mutated beasts."
Before anyone could react...
Rustle!
Rustle!
Rustle!
The forest suddenly began shaking violently, and branches snapped. Leaves scattered into the air, and heavy footsteps echoed from inside the trees.
Boom!
Boom!
Boom!
The ground trembled slightly, and everyone’s faces turned pale.
"That sound... something big!"
Major Kyle’s voice rang out instantly.
"Combat positions!"
The soldiers immediately moved into formation. Ability users also stepped forward instinctively. Even the wind and water ability users stopped arguing.
A few seconds later...
Crash!
Several trees were suddenly knocked aside. Then, massive figures burst out of the forest.
"Mutated wolves!"
Someone shouted in horror.
More than a dozen wolves rushed out onto the road. Each of them was nearly the size of a small car. Their fur was dark gray and rough like steel needles. Their eyes glowed with a terrifying red light. Saliva dripped from their fangs as they stared at the gathered humans. Low growls echoed everywhere.
Grrrrr...
The air instantly became tense.
"Th-that’s too many..."
One survivor’s legs trembled.
Mutated wolves were already difficult to deal with, and now there were more than ten.
Major Kyle quickly assessed the situation.
"Ability users in front!"
"Soldiers provide support fire!"
"Do not let them break the formation!"
The wolves did not wait. One of them suddenly howled. A long, chilling howl echoed through the forest.
Awoo!
The next moment, the entire pack charged.
Boom!
Boom!
Boom!
Their massive bodies rushed forward like speeding trucks.
"Fire!"
Gunshots instantly erupted.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Bullets struck several wolves, but their thick mutated fur absorbed most of the damage.
Only a few managed to pierce their skin.
The wolves barely slowed down.
"Wind blades!"
The wind lady immediately attacked. Sharp currents of air shot forward.
Shhhk!
Two wolves were cut across their bodies, leaving deep wounds. But the injuries only made them more ferocious.
"Water spears!"
The water user also joined the fight.
Several condensed water spears shot forward like javelins. One spear pierced directly into a wolf’s shoulder.
The wolf let out a painful roar.
The water spear embedded in its shoulder did not kill it. Instead, the beast became even more ferocious. Its muscles bulged as it ripped the spear out with brute force. Blood splashed onto the road. But the wolf did not fall.
"Damn it!" one of the soldiers shouted.
"Bullets aren’t stopping them!"
Major Kyle’s eyes sharpened.
"Ability users, step forward!"
Gunfire erupted across the road.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Bullets slammed into the wolves’ bodies, sparks even flashing against their dense mutated fur. Some bullets pierced shallowly into flesh, but the wounds were minor.
The wolves barely slowed down.
Their red eyes burned with hunger as they continued charging forward.
"Wind blades!"
The wind lady attacked again. Several compressed blades of air shot forward.
Shhk! Shhk!
Two wolves were struck across their bodies. Deep cuts opened across their flanks, but even those wounds failed to stop them. Instead, the beasts became even more enraged.
Grrrrr!
One of them suddenly leaped high into the air. Its claws flashed toward the soldiers’ line.
Just then, a faint ripple distorted the air. Sylas made a move. A thin spatial blade sliced forward.
Shhk!
The attack cut across the wolf’s chest, and red blood sprayed into the air. But the creature did not die. Instead, it crashed onto the ground and rolled violently before springing up again, glaring toward Sylas.
Sylas narrowed his eyes slightly. These creatures were far tougher than ordinary mutated animals. Even his spatial blades could not kill them with a single strike.
The wolf lunged toward him again. Sylas shifted sideways and swung his hand. Another spatial blade slashed across the wolf’s shoulder. The wound deepened, but the beast was still moving.
"Damn stubborn thing," Dylan muttered.
"Let me handle it!"
Dylan charged forward. His entire body surged with strength as he slammed his fist into the wolf’s side.
Boom!
The impact echoed loudly.
The wolf staggered, but it immediately retaliated with a claw swipe. Dylan jumped back just in time.
Meanwhile...
"Earth wall!"
Shuan slammed his palms against the ground.
Rumble!
The asphalt cracked apart as thick stone barriers rose from the earth. Two charging wolves smashed directly into the stone wall.
Boom!
The wall shook violently under the impact. Cracks immediately spread across its surface.
"Careful!" Shuan shouted.
"They’re stronger than I thought!"
The wolves clawed and bit at the stone barrier, rapidly tearing chunks of rock away. Serena raised both hands. Green energy spread from her palms.
"Vines!"
Plants along the roadside suddenly surged with life. Thick vines shot out of the ground and wrapped around the wolves’ legs. The beasts roared as they struggled violently.
The vines tightened around them, but the wolves’ claws tore through them quickly. Still, the moment of restraint gave the others a chance.
Evin extended his hand. Cold mist exploded outward. Several ice spears condensed, and he immediately sent them out.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
Ice spears immediately attacked the wolves, but they were immediately shattered upon contact with the wolves’ bodies. Only one managed to pierce a wolf’s eye.
Arg!
The wolf struggled to free itself from Serena’s vines with an ice spear stuck in its eyeball.
The other wolf managed to free itself from the vines and charged forward.
"Not good!" Evin shouted.
Major Kyle immediately rushed towards them and sent out a condensed fireball toward the wolf.
The wolf sensed the danger, and it immediately tried to dodge the fire.
The fireball streaked through the air.
Whoosh!
The wolf twisted its massive body mid-charge, barely avoiding the center of the attack.
Boom!
The fireball exploded beside it. Flames burst across the road and scorched the wolf’s side. The beast howled in pain, its fur burning black.
But it did not stop. Instead, it became even more furious.
Grrrrr!
With a powerful push of its legs, the wolf lunged straight toward Evin.
"Watch out!" someone shouted.
Evin quickly tried to form another ice spear, but the wolf was already too close.
