The Lies That Binds

Chapter 178

Chapter 178

The air in the house was heavy, each room charged with the tension of unspoken thoughts. Piper stood at the kitchen counter, staring down at the steaming mug of coffee in her hands. Her mind raced with possibilities, every thought a tangled web of ambition, fear, and uncertainty.

The email had been open on her laptop for hours, the words almost taunting her:

“We’ll need an answer by the end of the week.”

The offer was tantalizing. Expanding her company into Europe would solidify her legacy and ensure financial security for her children. It could also provide a fresh start, far from the chaos that had plagued her life in recent years. But the risks loomed just as large.

“Piper.”

Gabriel’s voice pulled her from her reverie. He stood in the doorway, his expression calm but curious. “You’ve been in here for a while. What’s going on?”

She hesitated, then set her coffee down and turned to face him. “I’ve been thinking about the offer. It’s more than just a business deal. It’s a chance to... start over.”

Gabriel nodded slowly, his brow furrowing. “And you’re considering it seriously.”

“I am,” she admitted. “But I can’t make this decision alone.”

Later that evening, Piper gathered Gabriel, Jasper, and Noah in the living room. The soft glow of the fireplace illuminated their faces as they settled into their seats, each of them sensing the gravity of the moment.

“I need to talk to you all about something important,” Piper began, her voice steady but edged with uncertainty. “The offer I mentioned the other day—the partnership to expand my company overseas—it’s more than just a business opportunity. It could be a chance for us to leave all this behind. The danger, the memories, everything.”

The room fell silent as the weight of her words sank in.

Gabriel leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees. “What would this mean, exactly? For the company, for the baby, for all of us?”

“It would mean relocating,” Piper said. “At least temporarily. The headquarters for the expansion would be in Paris. It’s a chance to grow the business on a global scale, but it would mean uprooting everything here.”

Jasper let out a low whistle, leaning back in his chair. “Paris, huh? Fancy. But that’s a hell of a move, Pipes. Especially with a baby on the way.”

“I know,” she said, her voice soft. “That’s why I need your input. This isn’t just about me. It’s about all of us.”

Noah was the first to respond, his tone measured. “It’s a huge opportunity, Piper. And I get why you’re tempted. But we’ve just started putting the pieces back together here. Moving across the world... that’s a big ask.”

Gabriel nodded in agreement. “Noah’s right. This offer could be incredible, but we’d be trading one set of challenges for another. And there’s no guarantee that the distance would make us any safer.”

“But it could,” Piper countered. “We’d be out of the reach of the people who’ve threatened us in the past. It’s a clean slate—a chance to build something new.”

Jasper crossed his arms, his expression skeptical. “And what about Lily? She’s got friends here, a routine. Throwing her into a new country, a new language... that’s not easy for a kid.”

“I’ve thought about that,” Piper said, her voice quiet but firm. “I’d make sure the transition was as smooth as possible. She’s resilient, and I’d do everything I could to support her.”

“And what about us?” Gabriel asked, his gaze steady. “What do you see for us in all this?”

Piper hesitated, the question catching her off guard. She hadn’t allowed herself to fully consider how the move might impact her relationships with the three men who had become such integral parts of her life.

“I don’t have all the answers yet,” she admitted. “But I do know that I want you all to be part of this, no matter what happens.”

The conversation stretched late into the night, each man voicing his thoughts, concerns, and hopes.

For Gabriel, the move represented a chance to protect Piper and the baby more effectively, but he worried about the logistical challenges of rebuilding their lives in a foreign country.

Jasper, ever the realist, was torn between his loyalty to Piper and his aversion to the idea of leaving behind the life he’d built in the States.

Noah, pragmatic and thoughtful, acknowledged the potential of the opportunity but feared the toll it could take on their already fragile dynamics.

As the fire burned low, the conversation reached a natural pause, each of them lost in their thoughts. Piper looked around the room, her chest tightening at the sight of the people who had stood by her through every storm.

“I know this isn’t easy,” she said finally. “And I don’t expect any of you to have an answer right now. But I need to make a decision soon, and I want us to be on the same page.”

Gabriel placed a hand on her shoulder, his touch reassuring. “We’ll figure it out, Piper. Together.”

Jasper smirked, though his eyes held a flicker of uncertainty. “Well, if we’re going to Paris, I guess I’d better start brushing up on my French.”

Noah chuckled softly. “You don’t need French for pastries, Jasper. You just point.”

The levity lightened the mood, but the underlying tension remained. The decision ahead would shape not just Piper’s future, but all of theirs.

After the meeting, Piper retreated to her bedroom, the weight of the evening pressing down on her. She sat by the window, gazing out at the quiet street below. The world outside felt deceptively peaceful, but her mind was a storm of conflicting emotions.

The offer was everything she’d ever wanted—a chance to expand her empire, secure her family’s future, and escape the ghosts of her past. But it also threatened to unravel the delicate balance she’d worked so hard to create.

A soft knock at the door broke her thoughts. Gabriel stepped inside, his expression unreadable.

“Can’t sleep?” he asked.

She shook her head. “Too much on my mind.”

He crossed the room and sat beside her, his presence steady and grounding. “Whatever you decide, we’ll make it work. You’ve been through worse than this, Piper. You’ll figure it out.”

She smiled faintly, leaning her head against his shoulder. “I just want to do what’s best for everyone.”

“And you will,” he said, his voice firm. “You always do.”

The next morning, Piper awoke to the sound of Lily’s laughter echoing down the hall. She found her daughter in the living room, sitting on Jasper’s lap as he attempted to braid her hair.

“Morning, Mommy!” Lily called, her face lighting up at the sight of Piper.

Piper smiled, her heart swelling with love. “Morning, sweetheart.”

Gabriel and Noah were in the kitchen, their voices low as they discussed the details of the day’s schedule. The sight of all of them together—a patchwork family bound by loyalty and love—made Piper’s chest tighten.

This was what she was fighting for.

Later that afternoon, Piper sat at her desk, the email open on her screen once again. The clock was ticking, and the weight of the decision loomed over her.

Taking a deep breath, she picked up her phone and dialed the number listed at the bottom of the email.

“Hello, this is Piper,” she said, her voice steady. “I’d like to schedule a meeting to discuss the offer.”

The line buzzed faintly as the person on the other end responded, but Piper barely registered the words. Her mind was already racing ahead, imagining the possibilities and the challenges that lay ahead.

As she ended the call, a mix of determination and uncertainty swirled in her chest. The path forward was anything but clear, but one thing was certain: this decision would change everything.
