“!!!” Jiaojiao.
She almost jumped up, nearly leaping onto Xiu Xi’s back.
Xiu Xi scanned the surroundings, not noticing any suspicious sounds, then turned back to reassure her, “Follow me.”
Jiaojiao nodded and stuck close to him as they walked inside.
The last time she came, she didn’t dare go in. She only saw the sign of the mortuary from afar, surrounded by wild grass, so Jiaojiao didn’t know what it looked like inside.
Now, following Xiu Xi inside, she could finally see clearly.
This mortuary has been abandoned for decades. There used to be several households nearby, but now they’ve all moved away. Apart from Feng Nianian, probably no one comes here.
Feng Nianian didn’t often walk through the courtyard surrounding the mortuary either. The ground was covered with weeds, and beneath them were debris and bricks, making it uneven to walk on. Jiaojiao had to watch her step while keeping an eye on her distance from Xiu Xi.
Once past the patch of weeds, they could see the whole mortuary.
It’s a mud house from the Republic era, possibly battered by years of wind and rain, now dilapidated beyond recognition. The roof, the walls, all riddled with holes, and many beams had fallen, one end resting on the ground while the other remained attached to the rafters, lying haphazardly askew.
The windows, wooden framed and papered, after decades of erosion, no longer resembled their original state, becoming patchy, white fragments barely hanging on, swaying with the eerie breeze, creating a chilling sight.
Of course, the section that’s hardest to overlook is those abandoned yet unprocessed coffins.
Some lay on benches, some have fallen to the ground, with the coffin lids sliding off to one side.
Scattered all over the place.
Even though Jiaojiao knew there was definitely nothing inside them, seeing these things still made her skin crawl, her calves weak, barely able to stand.
She wanted to hold Xiu Xi in front of her, but she couldn’t catch hold of him despite reaching out, becoming a bit anxious, “Brother Xi, I’m scared…”
Xiu Xi immediately turned around. He had been walking in front to shield her from any danger. After confirming there was no danger here, he moved beside her, walking alongside her.
“Don’t be afraid, there’s nothing here.” Unable to hold her, nor take her hand, he could only offer a reassuring smile.
Xiu Xi rarely smiled, but when he did, it was so dazzling one couldn’t look away. Jiaojiao, seeing his gentle smile, felt much of her fear dissipating.
She slightly eased her inner fears, then said, “Let’s go in and take a look.”
Xiu Xi nodded, always aligning his steps with hers as they walked inside.
He glanced at a few scattered coffins, finally focusing on one that wasn’t lying on the floor and had some scratches on one end.
Jiaojiao also saw it, her eyes lit up immediately, pointing at that coffin and saying to Xiu Xi, “Brother Xi, that one, that one, it must be it!”
Xiu Xi nodded, knowing she was scared, he said, “If you’re afraid, just wait for me here.”
“No, no, I think I’ll feel safer following you.” Jiaojiao refused without hesitation. In her eyes, nowhere was safer than by Xiu Xi’s side.
“Alright.” Xiu Xi nodded.
