77: Mine Alone
77: Mine Alone
Kim:Kim called David to his office as soon as he settled into his chair. He could not shake the feeling that something had happened at the restaurant to make Kit severely upset. But seeing as his first move was to go to his sister for comfort, it must have been something really serious, perhaps even something he was afraid of telling Kim.
What was it? As Kim waited in the room, he racked his brain of all the possibilities. Did he get attacked while he was out? No, it didn’t seem like he was physically hurt, and if he did, David would have informed him immediately.
Did he have a fight with his friends? Maybe. But that would mean that the Chiang Mai trip was off, right? And he doubted Kit would do something to ruin the plans that they had carefully crafted to catch the shooter.
Did he just have a flashback of their mom for some reason? Maybe that was making him miss her? Perhaps. But if that had happened, that means something must have triggered his memories of his mother, and that was another problem entirely.
Try as he might, Kim just wasn’t able to understand what had happened to make his lover upset, and that made him even more worried about Kit.
There was a knock at the door then, jolting him back to the present. “Come in,” he said, trying to stay composed.
David entered, his face blank like usual. “You summoned me, sir?” He stood in a subtly confident way, back straight and always alert. He didn’t seem injured, which meant there hadn’t been any indications of a fight.
“Did anything happen while you two were out? Anything at all that I should know about?” Kim asked.
David instantly had a knowing look on his face that made Kim immediately alert. “Something did happen, didn’t it?”
“Sir…I’m not exactly aware of what happened, because I didn’t see anything unusual.” David commented, before he started to recount the events. “I suspected that something was wrong, because at some point all of his friends had left, but Nong Kit was the only one who stayed inside. After a while, he went to the bathroom and was there for quite some time so I got worried and went to check on him.”
“And?” Kim prompted, chin on his interlaced hands as he leaned intently on the desk.
“As I recall, nothing had been out of place in the bathroom, no suspicious person lurking around him. But I found him there, water splashed on his face. His eyes were weary as he stared at himself, and he didn’t even startle when I abruptly barged in. In the car, he seemed distracted by his thoughts.”
Kim didn’t even need to ask if David verbalized his concerns to Kit, because his men never meddled in any of his personal affairs. “Thank you, David. You may go.”
That had been helpful, but also not so much. Kim needed to cover all bases before he asked Kit himself; perhaps that would lessen the chance of him upsetting his lover even more.
When David was gone, he called First, who picked up after the third ring. “Did Ben report seeing anything out of the ordinary?” he asked, no need for pleasantries.
Good thing First was also the no-nonsense type, because he said immediately, “No. He spotted no such thing.”
“Same with Kit,” he said. “We’ll have to do better next time.”
“Kim,” P’First stopped him before he could hang up the phone. “Ben left early for his checkup at the hospital. So Kit was alone with that Earth kid for some time.”
He hung up right after, distracted and desperate to figure out what the hell happened.
If nothing had gone wrong, then why was Kit so distressed? What exactly had he been told for him to react like this? Kim assumed that nothing physically troubling happened after David reported such, so it must have been something he learned or was told. Kim itched to know why he was crying into his sister’s embrace.
Was it Earth who had told him something? After all, that kid must have been scared that he had to deal with Kim and Kit’s mess more than once. When they were kidnapped by P’First and now, when his new house was attacked. Did he tell Kit something mean? Was that why he was crying? He was probably blaming himself for being a bad friend and always putting them in danger.
Finally, he couldn’t take it anymore. He stood up and briskly walked to Kit’s room, thinking it would be best to confront Kit while the wound was still fresh. He knocked quietly once again, but there was no response on the other side so he turned the knob…and the door opened slowly. Inside, he saw Kit sitting by the window, staring at the world outside, lost in his thoughts.
“Kit?” he called gently, approaching him as he would a wounded animal.
The man turned slowly, as if he had been unaware of what was happening all around him, and Kim could see that his eyes were red. “Oh, Kit.” Kim closed the distance between them, enveloping Kit in a hug. “What happened? I noticed that something was off with you ever since you came back. Tell me.”
Kit shook his head. “Nothing’s wrong,” he said as he swiped at his cheek and sniffed. “I was just… thinking.”
Kim clicked his tongue. “Don’t even try to deny it. Even David could sense that something was wrong. Please, teerakKit opened his mouth to say something, but seemed to decide against it and closed it back up. Inside, he was afraid of what would happen if his father found out that he told his P’Kim. Ayan already knew about their relationship, as well as the fact that Kanya was pregnant with P’Kim’s child, so he had no doubt that their father had reliable connections that would just as easily tell him that Kit had spilled the truth.
Kim put a finger under Kit’s chin, guiding his head so their eyes met. “You know you can tell me everything, right? We’re lovers…partners. We don’t hide anything from each other.”
Kit swallowed. “Yes, I know that,” he sighed, raking his mind for something…anything that he could tell P’Kim that could be believable enough that P’Kim would drop the subject.
And then he remembered his conversation with Earth…just moments before everything came crashing down.
“It’s just that…something has been on my mind,” he swallowed hard, knowing that he was doing the wrong thing, but also knowing it was the safest option. “Something a friend told me…”
A friend? Kim thought back to what P’First had told him moments ago, about Kit being alone with Earth after everyone left.
“What is it? What did Earth say?” Kim prompted urgently, trying to coax the truth out of Kit.
“How did you know it was Earth?” Kit looked up at him in surprise.
“That doesn’t matter, Kit,” Kim urged. “But please…tell me what’s bothering you? If you don’t tell me, Kit, I’ll have no choice but to call Earth directly and have him tell me.”
Kit sighed again, clearly reluctant, but also not wanting Kim to make good on his threat. “There’s no need for that; I’ll tell you.” He took a deep breath as though he was steeling himself. “Earth… Earth told me that Ben had feelings for me,” he confessed. “All this time, and I never knew.”
At that, Kim could not suppress his sigh of relief, pulling Kit in for another hug as his mind slowly eased out. “Oh, thank god. I was so afraid that it was something serious.”
But instead of melting into Kim’s arms, Kit pulled away, frowning, offended that Kim wasn’t taking his problems seriously. “What do you mean, P’Kim? This islife
As he vented, Kit looked like he was on the verge of tears once again, and it made Kim feel sorry that he had said something mean.
“Karthot khapKit didn’t look convinced, but Kim knew that his lover was going to beat himself up about it even thought it wasn’t his fault. So he had to nip that thought at the bud.
“TeerakWith a finality in his words, he pulled Kit in for a gentle kiss, easing his lover into him. But in his mind, he was happy that Kit was safe, and that Ben hadn’t acted on his feelings, because Kim didn’t share well.
