42: Unexpected Stubbornness
42: Unexpected Stubbornness
Kit:“How long have you been here?”
Kit swallowed, trying to find an excuse as to what he would tell his friend, but in the end, he decided to go with the truth. “Ever since you switched off your phone.”
Prem ran a hand through his hair nervously, messing it up even further. “So…like…ho-how did you even know I was here?”
“Woah, Prem, relax.” Kit held up his hands in surrender. “I didn’t mean to eavesdrop. I just heard your phone ringing when I called you and followed it here. It was all a coincidence, I swear.”
“Shia…”“Prem…what’s wrong?” Kit asked hesitantly. “You know you can always talk to me, right?”
Prem looked down at Kit, his face reflecting his inner conflict before he let out a sigh. “Can we talk here instead?” He asked Kit. “I don’t want anyone else to overhear our conversation.”
“Alright.” Kit agreed after a few seconds of thought. “Let’s go over to the benches, shall we? It’ll be way more comfortable.”
Prem nodded and the two of them headed to the benches in a shaded area of the pond, where hopefully no one else would disturb them and Kit would be able to find out exactly what had his friend looking so disturbed.
Once they had taken their seats on the comfortable benches, Kit finally turned to face Prem. “What happened, Prem?” He asked, sincerely worried. “I’ve never seen you raise your voice at Nong Wayo, let alone look so frustrated at him. Why did you speak to him like that? This isn't like you at all.”
Out of all of Kit’s friends, whom he had known since high school, Prem was one of the most level-headed people he knew. Not only was he studying medicine, in preparation to be a doctor, but he was always calm and well mannered, all thanks to his family background of coming from an entire family of established doctors.
To see him in a state where he had lost his cool, that too with the person he loved…it was unusual. Either NongNong“It’s Wayo…” Prem said at last, after what seemed like a physical effort to calm himself down. “He wants to study medicine, so that we can be in the same faculty.”
Kit frowned. “Just that?”
“Yes.” Prem grit his teeth. “He’s refusing to listen to reason.”
“But…Prem…what’s wrong with Wayo wanting to study medicine?” Kit frowned. “He’s your faen, meshai la“ChaiTawaKit frowned, raking his mind for the details he seems to have forgotten. And that was when it hit him.
“NongAs Prem nodded, Kit vaguely remembered the first time when Wayo had met their team, and it had indeed been a bloody encounter.
Wayo had been in love with Prem for a while by then, and would often come by to their basketball court to watch them play. But that day, almost four years ago…he had ventured far too close to the court and the ball had hit him straight in the face, causing him to get a nosebleed.
However, the nosebleed had been the least of their worries because he had fainted right after he had seen all the blood that had dripped onto his shirt and had stayed like that until someone had changed him out of his blood-stained shirt and into something clean and new.
“Shia“Mai“Kit,” Prem turned to face Kit, his expression desperate. “What should I do? Wayo just won’t listen to reason! He’s doing this just so he can be closer to me. But do you really think this is love? Does he really think his sacrifice will make me happy? His stubbornness to stay close to me will eventually make him sick!”
“Jai yen, PremKit placed his hand on his friend’s shoulder’s to give him a light, reassuring squeeze, but he didn’t know what else he could do to help him.
Nong Wayo had always been blind in love with Prem, but it was only now that he was truly understanding the extent to which he was ready to go to for his lover. It made Kit feel bad for Prem just as he felt bad for Wayo.
In a way, he understood both their perspectives. One was trying everything in his power to stay with the one he loves, despite his physical and mental limitations. He wanted to prove that his love was strong enough to overcome all difficulties. However, what he failed to see was that these limitations will eventually catch up to him and he will have a break-down that will make him loath the decisions he had made to stay with his lover.
And Kit had a feeling that Prem knew that. Which is exactly why he was trying his best to keep Nong“I think the only choice you have now is to talk to him, but not the way you had done today, Prem.” Kit told his friend, in hopes that it would help him calm down. “You must be level-headed. If he doesn’t see reason, then you must be his conscience. If he is being stubborn, then you must remain calm. It won’t do either of you any good if both of you get emotional. After all, you’re the PhiPrem took a deep breath, seemingly calmer than how he had been when Kit first found him. The cool breeze blowing through the trees was calming, as were the sound of the birds chirping all around them. Kit felt like the environment itself had played a big role in helping them gather their thoughts.
“Thanks, Kit.” Prem finally sighed as he got up from the seat. “You helped me clear my mind and see things from a new perspective. I’ll defiantly talk to Wayo, and this time, I hope I can get through to him.”
“You’re welcome.” Kit watched with a small smile as his friend bid him goodbye and headed to his class.
He looked around at the scenery all around him, feeling relaxed and happy that he had been able to help his friend. That was until…
