Chapter 12: Close Call

Kim:

Kim got out of the car and immediately brushed off his bodyguards who had come running to help carry Kit to the infirmary. However, they all stood stunned as Kim picked the boy up in his arms instead before rushing into the main house.

Aawut had already called the family doctor to remain on standby at Kim’s command and the commotion had already drawn quiet a lot of spectators as the maids and other servants looked on in bewilderment as Kim brought the boy to his room instead of the infirmary and asked the doctor to shift location so Kit could be more comfortable.

Kim’s sexuality had never been a reason of gossip around the main house, especially since Kim himself was so open about it that it was considered normal. However, despite the many lovers that had visited Kim’s house, Kit was the only one that Kim ever taken into his room. He was the only boy that Kim had been this concerned about.

Especially when the doctor took longer to shift location and arrived a few minutes late and Kim got angry enough to snap at him…it was when the house help started to question exactly who the boy was. Was Kim worried about the boy because he was Kaya’s younger brother, or was their master thinking about him as a potential future lover?

But no one dared say a word. Especially when Aawut gave them a chilling glance before closing the door to the main bedroom and that had them scurrying away immediately. The staff knew that it was the end of the topic and they were never to discuss it out loud…but that didn’t mean there wouldn’t be speculations behind closed doors.

Kim had also informed that Kaya not be informed about Kit’s condition until the doctors could give him an affirmative answer about his condition, but it seemed impossible because not even five minutes later, there was a loud banging on the door as Kaya’s voice came from the other side. She sounded panicked, so Kim told Aawut to open the door but instead of letting her in, he walked out to the main hallway, letting the doctor continue on with his work.

“Kim! How…why? What happened?” Kaya clutched at Kim’s collar, unable to control her emotions as tears streamed down her face uncontrollably.

“Calm down, the doctor is looking at him as we speak.” Kim sighed, feeling guilty at having taken so long to get to him. “The debt collectors were raiding your house when Kit reached the apartment. They may have gotten into a disagreement of some sort…that’s why they started to beat him up. But you don’t have to worry…they won’t be a problem anymore.”

Kim looked at Aawut and he immediately nodded his head before walking away from the scene. There was no need for exchange of words between Boss as his most loyal guard…because Aawut knew exactly what his boss wanted and he was not going to waste any time delivering.

Kim tried his best to stay calm himself, especially for Kaya, but in reality, he was afraid too. Today had been a close call…if he hadn't reached that apartment on time…he couldn’t even think about what could possibly have happened to Kit… the blood on the walls, they might have very well ended up being his.

The cleanup crew had already been warned to take care of the bodies in front of the apartment and in case anyone had witnessed the scene, they will be taken care of as well, either by compensation or by force. It was the way the Mafia worked and Kim was alright with it as long as no innocent lives were lost.

However, as Kim and Kaya waited outside the room, anxious for the doctor to come out and tell them the news about Kit’s current condition…Kla came rushing over as well, having heard the story from his bodyguard when Kim had come inside the house carrying Kit in his arms.

“What happened?” He asked Kim now, narrowing his eyes slightly at the woman beside him who clung onto Kim for dear life, before averting his eyes to his brother. “I heard that the Nong was injured.”

“Yes.” Kim told him about what had happened when he reached the apartment to talk to Kit. “We’re waiting for the doctor now.”

Kla nodded in silence, thinking over the event. “It’s better if Nong Kit and Nong Kanya move into the mansion right away. Those men might be petty loan sharks…or they might be connected to another gang that we are unaware of. If they are…then there is no question that the leader would follow behind soon. Staying here for the time being might be the only safe option for the both of them until the issue is resolved.”

“I think so too.” Kim nodded immediately, taking the opportunity since Hia Kla had already brought it up. “I’ll have my men move in your belongings here by tomorrow. There’s absolutely no way that I’m letting either one of you go back there again.”

This time, instead of fighting back, Kaya weakly nodded her head, accepting the offer. “Thank you, Kim…I don’t think I had the heart to go back after what happened to Kit today. I’m scared they will come after him once again.”

Kla watched the woman from the corner of his eyes, noticed how easily she accepted the offer. In his mind, he kept thinking if this was what the woman had wanted all along, but he didn’t say it out loud since he could tell just how protective Kim was of her. So he decided to watch her instead. Kim was the kind of person who believed cold, hard facts rather than sentimental words. If Kla could find evidence…

The door to Kim’s room opened then and the doctor walked out of it looking exhausted. There were no bloodstains on his coat, but he looked stressed.

“Doctor? Khun?” Kaya and Kim said at the same time as they rushed over to the man.

“The Nong is in stable condition right now; fortunately it’s just muscle wounds that will heal in a week or two at most.” He lamented. “Fortunately there were no head wounds but I did find a hit to his spine. We should take him to get an x-ray tomorrow, just in case. Everything else seems fine but since Nong is still unconscious…I can’t tell if the spinal wound will affect anything else.”

Even though the diagnosis wasn’t fully positive, Kim still breathed a sigh of relief because Kit was doing alright.

“Kaya…go inside and check on your brother.” Kim urged her, but it looked like she didn’t need urging; Kaya was rushing inside the instant the words were out of his mouth.

Thanking the doctor, Kim finally turned to Kla, his temper tightly controlled as he looked at his older brother in the eye.

“You think this happened because of me?” Kla got straight to point, because he didn’t like sugarcoating situations either.

“It was a personal matter and if you really wanted to say something, you should’ve said it to me in private.” Kim told him. “There was no need for you to make the matter look so scary, especially in front of Nong Kit!”

Kla wondered if the boy was starting to hold a special place in Kim’s heart as he had never seen his Nong fight him over strangers before, no matter how close they were to him.

“From what I can see, these two are nothing but trouble.” Kla told his brother straightforwardly. “They haven’t even stepped into the mansion and they are already causing you to have even more blood on your hands. They should know that having a child isn’t a simple matter, especially for the Ayutthaya family.”

Kla knew Kim was listening to his reasoning when he stayed quiet instead of answering him back.

“Today was a close call,” he reminded Kim. “That’s why you should warn the woman yourself, Kim. She should know that once you become linked with the Ayutthaya family…there’s no getting out.”
