Chapter 1867: Dangerous Visitor
Chapter 1867: Dangerous Visitor
"..."
"Did I not say it loud enough? I’m a woman."
Rex folded his arms on the table and reclined back a little, assuming a more relaxed posture.
He seemed nonchalant, as if he hadn’t said something outrageous.
High Lord Rashal stared at him uncomfortably long. Trying to read through Rex as the tension choked the office room—even tighter. ’What is he trying to say?’ His face remained neutral, but inside, he was frowning. ’No matter where I looked, there was nothing feminine about him. There are realms where the feature of a man is exchanged with a woman, but he’s not from that realm.
’No, more importantly, how can he lie?’ He fought back the urge to look around—the whiteness. ’This dimension is an extension of the Overseer’s power. Not even I can overpower the effect. So how could he—’
It was then that High Lord Rashal realized what Rex was trying to do.
A small smile curled on his lips as he leaned his head against his fingers, amused at this situation.
’So, he has someone behind him that can overrule the effect,’ High Lord Rashal nodded. ’Interesting.’
He’s smiling.
Rex kept a neutral expression as he maintained eye contact.
Since Vadyn hadn’t done the liberty of telling High Lord Rashal about him, there was no other choice but to do it himself. The dimensional effect was tied to a stronger entity. It’s a borrowed power. If Rex has to guess, it was borrowed from a Cluster Custodian or the Overseer itself.
It’s incredibly strong.
Far stronger than even Rex could compare to.
However, because of that disparity in strength, the System deemed this dimension too strong for him.
And that allowed him to use the System to dispel it at will.
Rex used that loophole to show High Lord Rashal that he has someone incredibly strong behind him, so that there’s leverage when he requested the permit. But his attempt only plastered a smile onto High Lord Rashal’s face.
He doesn’t seem to be threatened by this, and it was worrying.
Regardless, since Rex already made his move, there was no reason to be discreet about it.
"Rest assured, High Lord," Rex raised a hand and offered an assuring smile. "I’ve answered all of your questions prior to the last one truthfully. You have my word. After all, I would only gain trouble by lying to you."
"But you’d gain something from lying at the last question," High Lord Rashal smiled faintly. He waved his hand, returning them to the office room once again. An amused chuckle slipped out of his lips, and in an instant, he grabbed something from under the table and pointed it at Rex.
A revolver.
Intricate. Made entirely of divine-grade material. And could certainly kill a Demigod easily.
High Lord Rashal’s smile disappeared, replaced by a cold, calculating one.
"You forgot to weigh one particular factor, Mr. Rex Silverstar." He cocked the revolver—the cylinder spun and locked into place, ready to fire. "I’m not fond of others’ arrogance in my own office. I tolerate, but still dislike it if the people from the parliament do it. But from someone like you?"
He let the word hang unfinished.
Rex looked at the revolver and blinked slowly.
It doesn’t seem to surprise him. His face showed no change, like he didn’t care about death.
He scanned it with the System and realized that it was an incredibly powerful revolver.
"Let’s say that I shoot you right now," High Lord Rashal raised his brows, and his head moved up and down rapidly, like he was holding back the urge. "Flesh, bone, soul, and then that glass door right behind you, which is a damn waste since I like everything about my office, and I’ll have to wait for a few days to replace it.
"What do you think would change in my day other than telling my assistant over there, or my cousin, to clean up the mess?" He asked with a straight, dangerous face.
Rex scoffed very lightly and leaned forward, placing both arms on the table, and positioned his forehead directly in the line of fire. "You’ll have more..." He answered, staring at death directly in the face with unblinking eyes, "to deal with."
"Yeah?" High Lord Rashal smiled wider. "Of course, the parliament wouldn’t pardon me for killing a visitor or anyone in that matter since they wanted their hands to be squeaky clean, so I’ll need to clean the blood and flesh properly," He pointed at his assistant with his hand. "He’s really good at doing that. And then, I’ll need to call those white-robed boot-lickers down there to erase the trace of the soul.
"You’ll then be erased from existence. Like a Ghost," He placed down the revolver, and intertwined his fingers under his chin. "And I’ll probably need to send a flower and some compensation to those women of yours downstairs. And those four others back home. I heard becoming the widow of a ruined emperor is very hard."
At the mention of the others, Rex’s gaze hardened.
It wasn’t obvious, but the change didn’t escape High Lord Rashal’s eyes.
"Have your parents told you stories about Ghosts?"
"Yes."
"Have you told those stories to your kid so she won’t be naughty?"
"No."
"Do you want to tell?"
"Yes."
"My father was right when he told me the ones to watch for are those older—and younger than those in the same field," High Lord Rashal said, leaning back in his chair with a humorous laugh. But seeing the seriousness on Rex’s face, he stopped laughing. "I’m sorry. Tell me about your request."
As promised, High Lord Rashal listened to his request.
It was quite a long meeting, which was quite surprising.
’How long has it been already?’ Vadyn glanced behind, trying to seal a peek through the glass at High Lord Rashal and Rex. ’It’s been over an hour. They still aren’t done? He said he was busy. He was planning to wrap it up after a few minutes. What happened in there?’
Her gaze naturally fell to the assistant in the other room.
Just like her, he was also confused as to what the visitor could possibly have to say to High Lord Rashal to warrant this long meeting. Additionally, the two of them also saw that the steak was untouched—and had already gone cold.
Right around this time was supposed to be High Lord Rashal’s free time.
And he was stingy about his break time.
However, for some reason, he decided to allocate almost an hour of it for this meeting with Rex.
He had never even done that to the people from the parliament.
’I’m worried,’ A frown formed on Vadyn’s face as she tapped her thigh impatiently. Then, she relaxed, realizing that she was being stupid. ’What am I even worried about? It’s Rashal. What can possibly do harm to him?’
It was then that High Lord Rashal and Rex stood up at the same time.
Seems like the meeting was over.
High Lord Rashal gestured for Vadyn and the assistant to come back into the room, and they did.
"Enforcer Vadyn, please escort Mr. Rex to the exit. Our meeting is concluded. Also, give something to Mr. Rex so that we can contact him quickly," He instructed, and then turned to his assistant. "Give the details to my assistant."
"Yes, High Lord," Vadyn bowed respectfully. "I’ll do that."
"Nice meeting you, Mr. Rex," High Lord Rashal approached—and extended his hand for a handshake, which Rex accepted. "I assure you that once everything is settled, you will be satisfied with our new partnership."
"I’ll be looking forward to it," Rex shook his hand firmly and turned to Enforcer Vadyn. "I think I knew the way. There’s no need for you to show me out."
He gave one last nod to High Lord Rashal and walked out of the office.
As soon as he was out, Vadyn turned towards High Lord Rashal with an evident frown on her face, "Am I hearing things?" She asked, narrowing her eyes. "New partnership? What new partnership? What can that visitor even provide to you?"
"It’s a business for the High Lord, not you." High Lord Rashal sat back down to enjoy his meal, but he realized it was already cold. "I didn’t realize it was already that long."
"You were in there for an hour at least." Vadyn sat down and studied her cousin, trying to get a read on what was going on inside his mind. "So—what do you think?" She couldn’t hide her curiosity. "Is this visitor someone who won’t pose a threat to the realm?"
"He said that he’s not, but the Pure Black Dimension couldn’t affect him." He started to eat again.
"Wha—?" Vadyn looked at him in utter surprise, then turned to the assistant, searching for confirmation that she wasn’t alone in seeing this as a massive red flag. "If that’s really the case, how do you know he is telling the truth? Do you trust him?"
High Lord Rashal chuckled at the question as he put another big piece in his mouth.
He munched on it and pointed the knife at Vadyn.
"You still have so much to learn, cousin," He shook his head and focused back on his cold steak. "I was never searching for any reason to trust him or not. Anything that came out of his mouth is a lie. That’s how I’m going to treat it from the start."
"Then the meeting..." Vadyn raised her arms in confusion. "Why did you want to meet him?"
"Tell me, how do you deal with someone whom you haven’t even met?" High Lord Rashal paused. He waited for Vadyn to answer, but quickly saw that she had no answer. "That’s right, you can’t. I wanted to meet him to assess his character. That’s all."
"And your assessment?"
"He has a strong heart. Unbreakable. And—also possessive." High Lord Rashal chuckled. "If that one hadn’t made a mistake, I wouldn’t have been able to make him break character. Even when I praised the women he brought, he remained stoic.
"Only when I brought up the women and the little girl he has back home did he react."
High Lord Rashal leaned back and picked at his white teeth, finally feeling full.
He still has room for more, so he decided to order another one.
"I’m sorry, Sir, but you have a meeting due in ten minutes," the assistant reminded regretfully. "I believe eating another one would take up too much of your time and disrupt your performance. I will prepare it right after you’re done with the next meeting."
"Darn it. Time does pass faster when you enjoy it." High Lord Marshal cursed—His gaze then fixed on Vadyn again. "Aren’t you supposed to return to your work?" He asked, but quickly realized that she wasn’t paying attention. "What is it? What is it that you wanted to know?"
"I’m curious." Vadyn tapped her chin with her index finger in contemplation. "What exactly did he do to catch your attention in the first place?"
High Lord Rashal tapped on something under the table.
And almost instantly, the entire table shifted. Its outer layer split into two and dissolved, turning into a black steel table with a big screen at the center. On it, there are multiple dots arranged in rows, which constantly appear and disappear.
Most of them assumed the color of pale white or blue.
However, when High Lord Rashal searched for a code, one crimson dot remained on the screen.
"What is this?" Vadyn asked. She noticed that the assistant was stressing out on the side, seemingly not wanting High Lord Rashal to show this very screen to her. This must be something important. Classified. "What does this red dot mean?"
"Each dot represented an entity that entered the Cavity," He explained. "Pale white meant no link to any God or Goddesses. Blue meant a strong connection. Red meant the entity angered a deity." High Lord Rashal paused, tapping on the screen with his index finger. "As for dark red... That means this person had wounded a God before."
