Chapter 249: Pity for His Wife

Lisa Lawson came in and said, "Sir, Young Master Thomas is here." Tristan Sterling said, "Let him in." Thomas Sterling and Peter Preston came into the living room.

Upon seeing Rachel Royce,

Thomas Sterling strode forward, his face etched with concern. "Rachel, are you all right?" Rachel Royce shook her head slightly. "I’m fine." Peter Preston and Thomas Sterling had been out of town for an exhibition today. They were just about to set off back to Kingsland when they received a call from Julian Jennings.

Julian Jennings told Peter Preston about Rachel Royce’s situation at the hospital.

They had immediately driven back.

Now, seeing that Rachel Royce was unharmed,

Peter Preston felt relieved.

He had intended to take Rachel Royce home, but when he saw Melissa, his heart softened. He asked Rachel Royce, "Do you want to go home?" Melissa suddenly grabbed Rachel Royce’s hand, looked at Peter Preston, and said in a soft, sweet voice, "Mr. Preston, Mommy is staying here to sleep with me tonight."

Peter Preston crouched down, reached out to pat Melissa’s head, and said, "Then you take good care of Mommy, Melissa." Melissa promised, "I will definitely take good care of Mommy."

Peter Preston smiled and said no more. He stood up, looked at Rachel Royce again, and asked, "Where’s your phone?" He hadn’t been able to reach her when he called today.

Rachel Royce said, "I lost it. I’ll have to get a new SIM card tomorrow." Peter Preston grunted in acknowledgment. He then looked at Tristan Sterling, his gaze turning wary.

Tristan Sterling said, "You don’t need to worry, Mr. Preston. Nothing will happen to her." Peter Preston and Thomas Sterling left the villa.

Rachel Royce stood on the steps, watching them leave.

A cold wind blew against her thin frame, lifting her long hair.

Tristan Sterling glanced at her from the side. He reached out and wrapped a long arm around the woman’s body. Rachel Royce’s body stiffened for a moment. She looked up at him, their eyes meeting.

"Let’s go back inside. You haven’t recovered yet, don’t catch a chill." The man’s gentle gaze made it seem like he genuinely doted on his wife. Anyone who saw them would think he was a truly considerate and good husband.

She was certain now.

’Tristan Sterling was just trying to make her compromise this way. In essence, his current gentleness was no different from his past dominance. The goal was the same; only the method had changed.’

"Tristan Sterling, has no one ever told you how insincere your affections are?" Tristan Sterling’s thin lips curved into a barely-there arc, his dark eyes bottomless. "Then what do you consider to be sincere affection?" Their eyes met again.

It was as if each wanted to see into the deepest corners of the other’s heart.

After a brief silence, with the cold wind whistling in their ears, white snowflakes suddenly began to drift down onto Rachel Royce’s head.

Tristan Sterling looked up at the sky and said, "It’s snowing. The first snow of the year." Rachel Royce averted her gaze and went back inside.

Melissa was sitting obediently on the sofa, watching her mommy and daddy talking outside. She didn’t interrupt. When she saw her mommy come in, she quickly ran over.

"Mommy." Melissa took her mother’s hand and felt its icy temperature. "Mommy, your hands are so cold. Let me warm them up for you." Her two small, warm hands enveloped her mother’s.

Tristan Sterling came in and had Lisa Lawson prepare a bowl of ginger soup.

Lisa Lawson took in Tristan Sterling’s kindness toward Rachel Royce.

’Who would have thought she’d come back and make such a comeback as the mistress of the house? Now she’s acting like such a little seductress. She must have come back to keep seducing the master.’

Right now, however, she didn’t dare delay her master’s orders and turned toward the kitchen.

Melissa had her mommy and daddy watch cartoons with her.

Tristan Sterling took a storybook and told her a story, making Melissa roar with laughter. She collapsed into Rachel Royce’s arms, laughing until she was out of breath.

Outside, the cold wind howled, but inside, the scene was warm and cozy.

After Melissa fell asleep,

Rachel Royce leaned against the headboard, scrolling through digital files on a tablet. It was the detailed data for the TC project, which Tristan Sterling had just given her.

’Tristan Sterling is a refined egoist for whom profit is everything. For him to be willing to give up such a huge benefit can only mean that the goal he wants to achieve is even more important than this project.’

’So family has become more important to him, has it?’

At this thought,

a dark, inscrutable sneer touched the corners of Rachel Royce’s lips.

She placed the tablet on the bedside table and looked at Melissa sleeping peacefully beside her. She slowly lay down and placed a kiss on Melissa’s forehead.

「The next day.」

After a night’s rest, Rachel Royce felt that she was mostly recovered.

After waking up, Melissa lingered in bed, not wanting to get up, cuddling with her mommy.

Just then, a knock sounded at the door.

Immediately after, the door was pushed open.

Tristan Sterling walked in. The man was dressed in a high-quality, light gray cashmere sweater and black straight-leg trousers. His short hair fell across his forehead, and his posture was ramrod straight, his aura softened by a handsome gentleness.

"Daddy," Melissa called out.

Tristan Sterling walked over. "Should I have breakfast sent up for you two?" Leaning against her mommy, Melissa looked at her daddy and said, "Have it sent up, Daddy."

Tristan Sterling couldn’t resist reaching out to pinch her little cheek before turning and leaving the room.

Rachel Royce got Melissa out of bed to wash up, then began to brush her hair.

Melissa looked at the braids her mommy was doing in the mirror. "Mommy, you didn’t braid my hair right."

Melissa was a child who really loved to look pretty. Every day, her hair had to be styled nicely and adorned with pretty clips. The clothes Tristan Sterling had custom-made for her were all designer pieces.

At the Royce family home, because Rachel was always busy, Laura Preston was the one who did Melissa’s hair.

Rachel Royce knew she really lacked talent when it came to manual dexterity.

She had really done her best today.

She undid Melissa’s hair again. "Then let’s have Daddy do it for you."

Tristan Sterling, who had just brought breakfast up, was walking to the closet when he overheard Rachel Royce. He stepped forward and said, "I’ll do it. You go get ready."

Rachel Royce glanced at him, then stood up and moved aside.

The night before, Tristan Sterling had someone prepare new clothes for her.

A set of thermal underwear, a long, cream-colored knit dress, and a navy blue overcoat.

She went into the bathroom and changed.

She opened the curtains.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the world was a blanket of white, and snowflakes danced in the air.

Melissa came out with her hair all done.

"Mommy, look! Daddy did my hair." Rachel Royce tweaked her nose. "I know, you think Mommy’s no good at it."

Melissa immediately hugged Rachel Royce’s leg. "I don’t think that at all!"

"All right, let’s have breakfast with Mommy first."

After breakfast,

Tristan Sterling and Rachel Royce took Melissa to kindergarten.

There, they happened to run into Ivan Alden, who was dropping off Stella.

The two children greeted each other, then held hands and followed their teacher into the school.

Ivan Alden looked at the couple standing together and greeted them with a smile. "President Sterling, Evelynn. Dropping off your child together. How enviable!"

Rachel Royce shot him a cold look, ignored him, and turned to walk away.

Tristan Sterling stared at Ivan Alden with cold eyes and said, "Before you do something, you’d be wise to remember that you’re a father."

Ivan Alden let out a soft laugh.
