Chapter 204: Let’s See if He Has What It Takes
Tristan Sterling answered the phone, his voice low and cold. "Got it."
Rachel Royce and David arrived at the hospital.
Julian Jennings was already out of surgery. Thomas Sterling and Miles Sheldon were in the hospital room, along with the police.
Seeing that he was safe, Rachel Royce breathed a sigh of relief.
After the police finished their questioning and left, Rachel Royce stepped forward, her voice filled with concern. "Professor, is your hand injured?"
Julian Jennings’s arm was wrapped in bandages, and an IV was attached to his other hand. He looked at her and said, "It’s nothing serious. Just a minor injury to my hand."
Rachel Royce soon learned that when the car window had shattered, glass shards had embedded themselves in Julian Jennings’s arm. The glass had been removed, and the wound required six stitches.
Miles Sheldon had some scrapes, but thankfully, they weren’t serious.
At the time of the crash, if Miles Sheldon hadn’t reacted so quickly, the consequences would have been unimaginable.
As for the car crash, it was clearly deliberate.
There was no need to guess who was behind it. Zion Alden held a grudge against Julian Jennings and would definitely find a way to retaliate.
Julian Jennings said, "Rachel, you and Thomas need to go to the police station later to file for a restraining order. I’ve already had my lawyer submit the relevant documents. You just need to go and fill out a form."
Rachel Royce hesitated for a moment before finally agreeing, "Okay."
David said, "Evelynn, why don’t you come stay at my manor? Zion Alden wouldn’t dare try to snatch someone from under my roof."
Before Rachel Royce could answer, Julian Jennings said, "Since Mr. David has made the offer, Rachel, you should stay at his place for now."
David was surprised. He had expected Julian Jennings to be the first to object. He smiled and said, "Mr. Jennings, you’re certainly more magnanimous than certain other people. I think we might have an opportunity to cooperate."
Julian Jennings’s lips curved into a smile. "Of course. When the opportunity arises."
Rachel Royce asked, "Professor, how long will you be handling work here?"
Julian Jennings’s eyes darkened slightly. "It depends on the situation. For now, it looks like it will take some time. Don’t worry about me. Once you’ve finished your work, you and Thomas should return to the country."
Rachel Royce said no more.
At that moment, two people entered the room. Rachel Royce turned to look, and her expression instantly turned cold.
Zion Alden and Ivan Alden walked in from outside the hospital room, one after the other.
Zion Alden’s gaze swept over Rachel Royce.
Thomas Sterling stepped forward to block his view. Zion Alden sneered, his lips curling contemptuously, before finally looking at Julian Jennings on the hospital bed.
"I heard Julian had a car accident. It seems you’re not seriously hurt."
Julian Jennings stared at him with cold eyes. "I’m so sorry to have disappointed you, Young Master Alden."
Zion Alden chuckled lightly. "That’s a hurtful thing to say. After all, our families were once connected by marriage."
"You said it yourself—that was in the past."
"If we can’t be family, then we can at least talk business." As he spoke, he handed a document to Julian Jennings. "Take a look."
Julian Jennings glanced at it, reached out to take it, and gave it a quick scan.
Zion Alden said, "So? What do you think?"
Julian Jennings looked at Thomas Sterling and Rachel Royce. "Thomas, Rachel, you two should step out for a moment."
Rachel Royce looked at Julian Jennings with concern. Back when June Jennings and Ivan Alden were still married, Julian and the Alden Family had a deep business partnership in the United States.
Although things had turned sour due to the messy divorce proceedings, not to mention Zion Alden being sent to prison, despite all that, their mutual interests had coexisted for the past two years.
Julian Jennings surely knew what he was doing.
The three of them left the room first.
Miles Sheldon remained in the hospital room.
Ivan Alden followed them out of the room. He looked at Rachel Royce and said, "Can we talk alone?"
Rachel Royce averted her gaze. "We have nothing to talk about."
Ivan Alden asked, "Is June seeing someone?" As he spoke, the man’s dark eyes grew heavy.
Rachel Royce looked at him and quickly figured out what was going on.
’Ivan must have been talking to Stella, and Stella must have said something to him.’
Ivan Alden genuinely doted on Stella, and Stella was very attached to him. When June Jennings brought Stella back to their home country, Stella cried and threw tantrums, demanding to see her father. It was an incredibly painful time for June.
Ivan Alden later returned for a while to be with Stella.
The only updates he got about June Jennings’s life came from Stella.
Rachel Royce said, "June is single right now. Wouldn’t it be perfectly normal for her to want to find a boyfriend?"
A mocking smile touched the corner of Ivan Alden’s lips. "You really couldn’t wait, could you?"
Rachel Royce frowned. "What do you mean by that?"
Ivan Alden said, "You instigated June to divorce me just so you could set her up with your brother, is that it?!"
She knew very well that Ivan Alden hated her. June Jennings had once loved him deeply and listened to his every word. He believed the only reason June insisted on the divorce was because Rachel had been whispering poison in her ear, convincing her never to forgive him.
"So you fooling around with other women means June should just forgive you unconditionally, is that it?"
The sarcastic curve of Ivan Alden’s lips deepened. "And you think you’re any better?"
Thomas Sterling said coldly, "You’d better watch your mouth."
Ivan Alden glanced at Thomas Sterling, then said to Rachel Royce, "You certainly seduce your fair share of men."
Just as the words left his mouth and he was about to turn and leave, a fist slammed directly into his face.
Ivan Alden staggered back two steps.
Rachel Royce was startled. Seeing Thomas Sterling’s eyes blazing with fury, she quickly reached out to stop him from throwing another punch. "Thomas, don’t be rash."
Ivan Alden steadied himself, wiped the blood from the corner of his lip, and stared at Thomas Sterling with cold, sinister eyes.
"Young Master Alden, your words are getting ugly." David’s usual laid-back expression vanished, replaced by a serious tone.
Ivan Alden looked at David.
Just then, Zion Alden walked out of the room. He went to Ivan Alden’s side, glanced at his bruised face, then let his gaze sweep past Thomas Sterling to finally land on Rachel Royce. His dark eyes were deep and unreadable as he said, "Evelynn, we’ll meet again."
With that, he strode away.
Ivan Alden faced Thomas Sterling and delivered a threat, "I won’t forget this punch."
After the two of them left, the other three went back into the hospital room.
Rachel Royce asked anxiously, "Professor, what did you two talk about?"
Julian Jennings handed her the document he was holding.
Rachel Royce took it and looked it over. It was a proposal for a fund project, with capital amounting to forty billion US dollars.
"What is Zion Alden up to?"
Julian Jennings said, "I’m afraid Tristan Sterling wants this project too."
Rachel Royce frowned, instantly understanding. For people in Tristan Sterling’s circle, there were no true friends, only permanent interests.
She gave a scornful laugh. "So Zion Alden is trying to drag you into this, Professor, so he can profit from the conflict."
It was a chess game played out in the open. Everyone knew what the other was thinking, each with their own agenda. It all came down to who was the better player, and who would come out on top.
A cold glint seeped into Julian Jennings’s eyes. "We’ll just see if he has what it takes."
Rachel Royce looked at him.
’Tristan Sterling tried to short-sell Eastgate last time.’
Julian Jennings must have been nursing a grudge ever since. The risk this time was immense, but it was undoubtedly an opportunity as well.
An opportunity to make both Zion Alden and Tristan Sterling pay a price.
"Professor, what do you need me to do?"
Julian Jennings said, "Just focus on finishing your own work first. We’ll talk after that."
"Alright then."
Julian Jennings looked at David.
David immediately understood his meaning and threw up his hands. "I’m not interested in your battles. I just like to watch the show."
Julian Jennings said nothing.
Later, Thomas Sterling drove Rachel Royce to the police station, where she filed for an emergency restraining order that went into effect the same day.
Zion Alden looked at the email that came through. He let out a cold laugh, then looked at Tristan Sterling, raised his wine glass, and said, "I ran into Evelynn at the hospital today."
Tristan Sterling sipped his wine, his expression unreadable, and did not respond.
"There’s quite a line of men who want to sleep with her. How many times do you think she’s slept with Julian Jennings?"
