Chapter 104
Chapter 104
“Mrs. Adams, we’re facing a dilemma here. Getting the CCTV footage from your brother seems impossible. Is there any way you can access your company and manage the records? We can’t proceed without the owner’s consent,” the police detective explained while keeping his gaze fixed on me. Randall didn’t arrive yet, so he did not know I was conversing with the cops. I didn’t even bring up his mother because I wanted to move on, but I couldn’t help but assume she was one of the suspects.
However, there had been no progress with CCTV since they were unable to proceed without the approval of the company’s owner. If I had required a duplicate of the clips, I would have needed a tentacle within the office to assist me. As I had been thinking, I remembered the woman who had helped me hide from Archer. I abruptly lifted my head, menacingly glaring at the detective, who I believed was perplexed as to why I suddenly stared at him.
“I have an idea on how we can access the CCTV footage without me having to physically enter the premises,” I suggested. “However, the only obstacle is that I’m not aware of how to reach the woman in charge. Due to the heightened security measures at Archer’s, I still have to wait all day just to catch a glimpse of her.”
The officer gave me a nod and then spoke again, struck by a sudden idea. “We’ll provide you with aid, just in case your brother tries to harm you while you wait. We’ll be there to assist you.”
He then whispered to the other officers. A few seconds later, they all nodded in agreement, indicating that he had given them instructions.
It had been just a matter of time before they had been gone, and Randall had arrived just in time. Randall had appeared to be in a rush as he had walked down, and when he had spotted me, his eyes had been anxious, so I had approached him to welcome him. I had seen he had been clutching a piece of paper as he had approached me and had looked up at him. Before informing me what the inside had been, he had raised that piece of paper.
“Here’s the paper. I need to prove my mother’s innocence in your parents’ deaths, but...” His pause was prolonged, and I could sense his tension building as his jaw clenched. Anticipating his next words, I cradled his hand and encouraged him to speak his mind freely.
“I talked to someone, and that person told me that my mother was not the culprit of the crime and that she was just engaged in the explosion because your mother and father were arguing because of her that day.”
I had hidden in a corner again, just as I had done when I first entered the company, so Archer’s guards couldn’t see me. I was right in asserting that his security was stricter because I had previously tried to break in there. I had arrived too early to wait for the woman who helped me, but I had yet to see her. Because I already had someone with me, I was no longer terrified of Archer’s guard and puppy. The cops never abandoned me. We had been waiting for a long time, but they couldn’t help me find her since they didn’t know what she looked like.
It was already noon, but the woman had not passed by, or perhaps we had not noticed her since we were drowsily watching at the entrance so we wouldn’t miss her arrival. I made my way to the white police cruiser. It looked luxurious, and you’d never guess the cops were inside. I stepped inside and joined them in their enjoyment of the air conditioning.
However, as soon as I got inside the car, the woman went by, so I slammed the door open and nearly fell to get out. When I realized the woman had entered, I came to a halt and hurriedly concealed. We had to wait a long time to see her again. I was at a loss about what to do. I wanted to see the contents of the CCTV so that the true perpetrator could be identified. If we couldn’t acquire it, it would only be a matter of hours or days until Archer discovered that there was a CCTV that survived the blast. If we didn’t get that, the proof, like the other evidence, just vanished like a bubble, and justice for my parents would never be served.
I had accidentally bitten my lip quite hard and had felt a sharp pain in my stomach, which had been troubling me for some time. Charlotte was nowhere in sight, and I did not know her whereabouts. The only issue I had was with Archer and Helena. Randall, on the other hand, already knew that his mother was a mistress. That night, I had done nothing but comfort him in his distress caused by what he had learned. It wasn’t my place to judge him for something he hadn’t done wrong. Instead, I understood the situation that was beyond our control. It didn’t hurt him or me, but we both felt the pain. As his wife, I wanted to empathize with his suffering.
Ava contacted me while I was hiding and hoped the woman would still come out. I had left Randle with her, and Randall had no idea I was heading there. We had gone through too much, and I didn’t want to bother him any longer, so I solved the situation on my own. Hopefully, in the following years, we would be able to live without worrying about other issues, so I focused my efforts on resolving those troubles that needed to be addressed. And I would only be satisfied when I got back to the firm that was truly for me. I didn’t think any longer and simply answered the phone.
“Are you still there, Winter — NO!” Ava couldn’t finish what she was saying because of the background noise, and when I heard the ruckus of the two toddlers, I realized why she was bothering me.
Randle’s head was obviously obstinate again, so I simply closed my eyes in embarrassment. He became more heinous as he grew older. My gut churned even more than I suspected he was battling with Ava’s daughter once more. Because Ava hadn’t returned to our call, I hung up and went to the police I was with. I couldn’t possibly leave Randle with others anymore.
When I knocked on the car window, the cops who were with me glanced at me. I scratched my head since I was the one who claimed everything was simple because I knew someone who could assist us, but I was there then, leaving again because I needed to see my kid, who was fighting with other children. The heat had made my head hurt, so I needed to relax. I believed they could accomplish what they did because there were three of them. They also ate in the vehicle.
“I’m sorry, but I have to go. My child needs me. By the way, did you notice the woman’s expression earlier? I hope you both saw it, too.” I wore an apologetic expression, hoping they understood.
“Absolutely! We apologize for the inconvenience caused while carrying out our job,” he exclaimed as he settled in his seat. I heaved a sigh of relief, my face lighting up with a smile. After thanking them, I quickly hailed a cab, hoping that our predicament would be resolved by the end of the day.
But when I arrived at Ava’s home, it wasn’t only them I saw. The man sitting and crossing his arms directly glared at me.
“That’s why you left the house suddenly. If I hadn’t come back, I wouldn’t have known you were going somewhere unknown to me. I don’t mind where you go, but when you go to risky places, it gives me a headache,” Randall spoke with a mixture of agitation and tenderness in his voice.
