Chapter 1271: Extra: Donovan Jennings 1
Chapter 1271: Extra: Donovan Jennings 1
As the wedding date approached, the Jennings Family arranged their personal schedules in advance to ensure there would be no interruptions at least three days before and after the wedding.
After seeing Scarlett’s wedding attire fitting, Donovan Jennings reluctantly had to personally fly to the Capital Metropolitan to handle some matters at the Security Bureau and Mystical Council.
He said goodbye to his family and set off for the Capital Metropolitan the next day.
After seeing Donovan off, Magnolia Hearne ran to Luca Jennings’ study.
Without caring if he was working, she squeezed into his spacious office chair, sitting close to him with worry,
"Scarlett is getting married, yet Donovan, as her brother, still has no partner. Don’t you think we should take some action?"
Such as arranging a matchmaking session.
Luca Jennings was holding a tablet, reviewing the current season’s financial report from abroad, and only responded with a "Hmm?" after hearing her sudden remark.
Seeing this, Magnolia Hearne decisively snatched the tablet from his hands and put it aside, forcing his full attention onto her.
Luca Jennings, who always took work seriously, was surprisingly not annoyed by the interruption.
Removing his gold-rimmed glasses from his nose, he looked at his wife seriously and asked,
"Haven’t you always advocated for non-interference and not making arrangements?"
She herself was not someone who liked being interfered with. Planting the Peach Blossom Mark on Scarlett was out of necessity back then, but she had never interfered much with Donovan.
Even after returning from the Otherworld, she never offered any suggestions for Donovan’s future plans.
Because in those years without her, Donovan had already grown into a reliable adult on his own.
Such a Donovan no longer needed too much advice from her, and she wasn’t suited to give advice anymore.
But in her heart, she still felt indebted to Donovan.
In the past eighteen years, Scarlett hadn’t received motherly love, and neither did Donovan.
Especially since Scarlett was abducted as a child and had a special Fate Chart, Magnolia Hearne had always focused more on Scarlett.
"Non-interference and completely ignoring are two different things."
Magnolia Hearne burrowed her head into Luca Jennings’ embrace,
saying gloomily, "I don’t want Donovan to think I’m an unqualified mother."
Luca Jennings, feeling her emotions, gently brushed over her head, maintaining a rational tone,
"There are many kinds of mothers in this world. Some give everything for their children, while others focus on self-realization while balancing family commitments. There’s no absolute standard for being a competent mother, and Donovan understands this better than anyone else."
Scarlett and Donovan are just parts of her life, not her entire existence.
Similarly, as a mother, Magnolia doesn’t need to fulfill any responsibility for them; just having her around is enough.
Because this is how Luca Jennings feels too.
Magnolia Hearne looked at Luca Jennings, but the worry between her brows didn’t dissipate.
"I’m still worried..."
Seeing this, Luca Jennings even had an impulse to immediately call their son back to comfort her.
As he prepared to act, he heard her voice, somewhat troubled, saying,
"What if Donovan is like you in relationships? If no one gives him a push, he might remain single for decades..."
Luca Jennings: ...
He silently withdrew his outstretched hand, looked down at the person in his arms, with a deep gaze, feeling that he had been subtly criticized.
Magnolia Hearne, still in her tilted-head position, saw him staring at her, and immediately gave him a cheeky smile. Before he could react, she grabbed the glasses from the table and put them back on his face,
"I just wanted to say, you look quite handsome with glasses, so keep them on a bit longer."
The topic changed somewhat abruptly, and Luca Jennings successfully fell into her trap.
He adjusted the glasses on his nose to the most flattering angle, then looked at her, "Do you like it?"
Magnolia Hearne nodded.
Luca Jennings with a serious expression, unchanged in tone, said, "Then I’ll keep wearing these tonight."
Magnolia Hearne: ???
This isn’t heading to the airport.
...
Capital Airport.
After getting off the plane, Donovan Jennings felt the cool breeze of the Capital Metropolitan, prompting a light sneeze.
He instinctively felt that someone at home was talking about him.
He took out his phone to report his safe arrival when he heard Felix Clark speak beside him,
"Mr. Jennings, the car waiting to pick you up is just ahead."
Donovan nodded, let the driver open the door to the back seat, raised his foot, but suddenly paused, not entering immediately, and simply looked quietly at the person sitting in the back seat.
"Donovan, I’ve come to pick you up. Hope you don’t mind?"
The voice was clear and straightforward, coming from Nyxelle Sinclaire, seated inside the car.
Nyxelle Sinclaire was the next heir of the Sinclaire Family, one of the Capital’s Mystical Sect families, and her family held an equivalent position in the Mystical World as the Xander Family where Gregory Xander was from. Her father, like Donovan, was part of the Mystical Council, and she herself was the head of the Security Bureau’s first division.
Donovan looked at her in the car, after a half-second pause and then swiftly adopted his habitual smile,
"Of course, I don’t mind."
With that, he got into the car, simultaneously signaling Felix, who was about to get into another vehicle, "You sit in the front and join us."
Felix’s gaze swiftly scanned Nyxelle in the car, feeling the pressure under her calm gaze, yet he nodded under the pressure, opened the door, and got in.
The car started and soon left the airport, entering the airport expressway.
With the evening sun yet to set, the streetlights of the Capital Metropolitan were already lit up.
Nyxelle glanced at the rapidly retreating scenery outside and then at Donovan next to her, tilting her head, she invited,
"It’s just about dinner time, I’ve booked a restaurant. Would you like to have dinner together?"
Hearing this, Donovan turned to her, his face still carrying a smile, polite yet warm,
"I’m fine with dinner, but not with dating."
He maintained a smile in his eyes while saying something incredibly straightforward.
Nyxelle’s initially raised eyebrows fell immediately after hearing his first half, looking at him, she seemed somewhat persistent,
"You’re really not considering me at all? Because I’m not from an elite family in the Capital Zone?"
"It’s nothing to do with that."
Donovan’s tone remained warm, saying,
"My parents don’t need me to marry for family ties. The only criterion I have for a future spouse is whether I personally like them."
Which implied he didn’t have feelings for her.
Nor any intention of dating her.
Both expressed their meanings quite bluntly, Donovan no less, using the gentlest voice to deliver the most unequivocal words, filling the car with silence.
It wasn’t just the two in the backseat; in the front, the driver and Felix had, at some point, held their breath, trying to minimize their presence.
The eerie silence stretched until Nyxelle finally broke it, asking,
"What if I say that being with me could help you gain control over the Security Bureau and Mystical Council faster?"
She looked at Donovan, her voice filled with an inducement,
"I know you’re involved in Mystical Sect matters for your sister. With me and the entire Sinclaire Family’s help, you will undoubtedly become her strongest support."
As her words faded, Donovan didn’t respond immediately but slowly turned to look at her.
His familiar smile remained, yet somehow, there was a trace of coldness mixed in his gaze.
