Chapter 1257: Extra: The Obsession of the Roving Corpse

Chapter 1257: Extra: The Obsession of the Roving Corpse

Mountains have spirit, waters have veins.

Mountain dwellers seek corpses, finding guidance naturally.

Stella Gibson leads the way ahead, the trio traversing through dense forests and thickets, walking for nearly two hours until finally reaching an open scenery.

Fayella spots the basin filled with flowers below the cliff, initially stunned, quickly recalling something.

The scene before them was originally her and Declan Dixon’s destination for this jungle expedition.

She had stumbled upon a photo online, specifically asked about the location, prompting her to explore this area together.

But in reality, not only did they fail to find this spot, they actually got lost deeper within the mountains.

Her heart ached sharply for a moment; she looked away, not wanting to see anymore, hoarsely telling Stella leading ahead,

"There’s no path ahead, we better take another route."

As she spoke about retreating, she saw ahead that Stella Gibson and Ashton Todd had already simultaneously stopped.

Stella said,

"Found it."

Fayella hadn’t yet understood what Stella meant by finding it, when she saw Stella suddenly raise her hand, pointing to a place obscured by the shrubbery ahead,

"He’s over there."

An instant of blankness overtook Fayella’s mind, clueless about who "he" referred to.

But soon, following Stella’s pointed direction, through the gaps in the thickets, she saw the spot appearing to have a person sitting.

Her pupils shrank suddenly, realization dawned upon Fayella, and she swiftly bypassed the two, waving her hiking stick, directly through the shrubbery to the back of that "person."

Seeing that familiar silhouette and seated posture, her eyes suddenly sparkled with immense joy.

"Declan Dixon!!!"

He’s not dead!

Wonderful, he’s actually alive!

Fayella couldn’t wait to dart towards him.

...

Stella Gibson stood in place, watching her excited figure with a rare solemnity on her baby face.

She turned her head, signaling to Ashton Todd,

"Prepare the recorder."

They had brought portable cameras when departing, and although Ashton was puzzled, he obediently complied.

After activating the recording function, the duo followed the route Fayella had just taken, passing through the shrubs.

However, midway through, they heard Fayella’s frightened cry.

"Ah ah ah!"

Stepping quickly forward, Stella Gibson and Ashton Todd saw Fayella sitting on the ground, looking at the seated Declan Dixon, tearfully distressed,

"Why, why is it like this??"

Before them, though Declan Dixon sat, his entire being was clearly stiff.

The icy temperature, grayish skin, all unmistakably revealing this person had died.

And had been dead for several days.

Hope had initially blossomed in Fayella, only to plunge into despair upon seeing Declan Dixon’s dead body.

Earlier on, she had already confirmed his death.

Yet, just moments ago she thought he had come back to life.

Otherwise, how could he have moved from the cave they’d placed him in, to this place?

Or perhaps, he hadn’t been entirely dead at that moment, somehow reviving after being abandoned, yet unable to exit the mountain on his own, eventually perishing here.

Fayella dared not imagine the latter, because if so, how desperate must Declan have felt then?

If it were the latter, they might have rescued him together...

Under the strain of days, compounded by doubts and interrogations online and from those around, Fayella had been holding on by sheer willpower. Now that Declan’s body had truly been found, it left her on the brink of a breakdown.

Seeing this, Stella Gibson frowned, single-handedly chanting as she quickly approached,

"...The mind shall be calm, guiding my spirit alone; mind and spirit unite, the energy shall follow..."

Through her chanting, Fayella finally calmed from her breakdown, yet her gaze remained fixed on Declan’s corpse, murmuring to ask Stella,

"Why? Why did his body appear here?"

Seeing her calm, Stella then checked Declan’s corpse briefly before explaining,

"It’s Walking Corpse phenomenon."

She continued,

"Some people with deep unresolved feelings or strong Resentful Energy before death, might occasionally experience Walking Corpse after death."

Just like in the past, where elders held wakes at home, suddenly sitting up out of the coffin, or the coffin would be found empty, upon searching they’d appear on the ground nearby or at home.

This phenomenon is generally called Walking Corpse.

The Walking Corpse state typically doesn’t last long; once the unresolved feeling dissipates, it returns to normal.

However, if the feeling remains indefinitely, over time, they essentially "live" again, and that is an Undead.

Declan Dixon’s situation clearly belongs to the former.

Next to them, Ashton Todd, meant to focus on filming, suddenly spoke up after hearing the explanation,

"For someone so young as him, usually strong feelings aren’t that deeply rooted, is it Resentful Energy then?"

Fayella’s face went pale at this, while Stella Gibson rolled her eyes at him, gesturing to stop scaring people.

"If it were Resentful Energy, his body’s state wouldn’t be so peaceful; the occurrence likely stems from unresolved feelings."

Stella explained, her gaze moving from the basin cliff towards the distant mountains, supplementing,

"His own unresolved feelings, combined with the mountain’s miasma influence, likely led to the Walking Corpse phenomenon."

Though Fayella understood, confusion lingered as she murmured to inquire,

"What unresolved feelings did he have..."

Stella looked at her, "I’m not sure, but my guess is it was about you, or about all of you."

She continued,

"I’m unaware about others’ conditions, but you’ve been stained with his Corpse Energy, indicating that during the Walking Corpse state, he stayed around you, perhaps even guiding you towards the correct path."

According to Fayella and the others, after abandoning Declan’s body, they continued exploring to search for ways, finally finding rescue after four days.

This timeframe coincides closely with Declan’s Walking Corpse period.

"After guiding you out, he didn’t stay where he was but returned into the depths, arriving here. Hence, I assume, this place is likely also one of his unresolved feelings."

As Stella speculated that Declan guided them out of the mountain, Fayella couldn’t help but shiver slightly, and upon hearing the last sentence, her tears went unchecked, flowing rapidly.

She gazed at Declan’s corpse, instantly crying uncontrollably.

"This place was a secret agreement between him and me to find and leave a mark..."

As she cried, she pulled out a necklace from her collar.

This was the item she instinctively gripped previously.

"This necklace was the gift he gave me before dying... He mentioned it was a pity; I thought he regretted not making it out, but actually..."

Actually, he intended to give it when they found the marked place.

Women are sensitive to certain signals.

Though initially acquaintances sharing interests, he practically chatted with her daily.

When he proposed helping her discover this mark, she harbored faint suspicions.

Declan Dixon had initially planned to confess to her.

Yet before dying, he said nothing, only gifting the necklace prematurely.

Knowing he couldn’t accompany her further, a confession before death would bind the living ones.

Hence, he stayed silent.

Even if unspoken, Fayella had already discerned, today merely confirms it indirectly.

From bitter sobs at first, Fayella soon wept miserably,

"Declan Dixon... Wuwuwu..."

Her grieving cries echoed through the mountains, reverberating countless times.

But that person will never hear them again.
