Chapter 501: The forefront of all my wishes
Chapter 501: The forefront of all my wishes
501.Jia stood before Mingshen, an awkward smile on her lips and guilt in her gaze intensified by a hundred fold. Personally, she felt she couldn’t look him in the eye.
"I know you are mad at me...I am so, so sorry. Tr-Trust me, I left on time but then I boarded the bus and felt a dangerous air. Then I realized a young college guy was being threatened by his girlfriend - who also had abducted his little sister just to have an upper hand on him. It was a mess because I thought the little girl with her father in the bus was the one being kidnapped, but I turned out to be wrong and then I had to step down at a bus stop where the college couple had and followed them...!" she said in one, single breath without a break, yet the embarrassment of being fashionably late didn’t die down one bit.
I really messed up big time...
But as she felt a touch on the top of her head, she looked up and saw Mingshen picking a leaf from her hair strands.
"Just where were you that you got ambushed by leaves?" Mingshen blinked.
"At one point, I confronted the girl finally but she panicked and escaped. I ran after her and we ended up in a playground close to an elementary school. She was young but fiesty. Didn’t give in until I tackled her on the ground-"
Suddenly, he grabbed her arm and squinted at some scratches along her skin. "What is this? Why did you get hurt?"
"Sis got hurt!?" Lihua and Bojing and Yang Bingqing rushed at once as if the apocalypse was near. Jia was now surrounded on all four sides.
"Ohh!" She laughed and waved her hand in dismissal. "It’s nothing. Just a few scratches when I was tackling her. No big deal."
"It is a big deal," Mingshen’s voice took the deepest plunge into the ice, making her swallow.
He walked away and returned a minute later with a first-aid kit. Dragging her to the couch, he made her sit obediently.
"Mingshen, it-it’s quite alright," she sweated. "Bojing can help me with this. You should enjoy the celebration...I am already being stared at for far too long and hard now," she whispered, her heart racing fast.
"Just stay still," he warned, a medicated cotton swab between his two fingers.
How can I stay still when I am the subject of everyone’s attention right now...!
"Aish, you don’t need to worry about the celebration," Huojin grinned, resting his elbow on her head. "The party hasn’t even started. Now it will."
"Hey! Take your arm off my head!" She shot a glare. "Also, what..? What do you mean it’s not started?"
"Of course it hasn’t!"
Jia nearly stumbled with Yang Bingqing’s passionate declaration.
"How could we start the celebration without my daughter-in-law on board!!?"
The guests - "..."
Jia - "..."
Lihua - "..."
She was close to fainting when Wei caught her.
Only Mingshen was particularly unaffected by it and continued tending to her.
"A-A-Aunt..." she called out with an obvious urgency.
"Yes, my dear?" Yang Bingqing looked at her dotingly. "Is Mingshen doing a good job with first-aid? Should Cheng do it instead?"
Mingshen shot her a dirty glare. "You stay away from this, Mom."
"Is this the way you talk to your elderly and helpless mother!?" She exclaimed, aggrieved. "I was just worried about Jia! Cheng, did you see? Did you just see? No respect for his parents at all..."
The said husband was playing with the twins without a care in the world. He was the next target of their stickers.
"Indeed," was his one-word, plain response.
But the guests’ reactions were far from plain.
Daughter-in-law!?
"Yang Mingshen is already married?"
"No way! There was no news about this!"
"Or is he engaged?"
"Wait, I do remember her accompanying him at the charity banquet evening. Remember when Hou Tengqi’s fiance was wrapped up in that scandal?"
"Wait...oh, yes! She was that same officer on the scene!"
"So this has been going for that long?"
"But who is Song Jia anyway? What is her background? How did she gain Yang Mingshen’s attention?"
"He was never interested in a girlfriend up until this point...!"
One spark was all that was needed. The spark was Yang Bingqing’s declaration that triggered a wave of frenzy and hushed whispers across the room. The families, who had especially come to the party to matchmake their daughters with Mingshen, particularly felt a huge blow to their plans.
"All done," Mingshen nodded, finally satisfied.
"What all done?" Jia was flabbergasted. "Tell me what’s going on here! I am suddenly the daughter-in-law and d-did you really not begin the celebration until I came in?"
Mingshen frowned. "Obviously. What was the point in starting the celebration without you?"
Her jaw dropped. She looked at the time. Ten-fifteen it was. The party was supposed to begin at seven-thirty.
"...You and the guests...r-really waited for me that long?"
"I don’t care how long or short it was."
"What if I couldn’t have returned?"
"Then no celebration? I didn’t force anybody to wait. They were free to leave," he pouted.
"It’s your birthday celebration..!! It shouldn’t matter whether I could make it or not, you should have gone ahead anyway."
"But how would the celebration begin if I didn’t dance with you?" he sulked. "I wanted to dance with you, cut the cake and allow three extra pieces for you. A little more sugar tonight was okay~"
"..."
"Then I wanted to dance with you some more, have dinner and dance once again. How could I have done all this without you? You are at the forefront of all my wishes. With that said..."
Mingshen rose and offered his hand. His lips held the brightest grin that even the luxurious chandeliers couldn’t rival.
"May I have the honor to have my birthday dance with you?"
Jia could only stare at him, slightly wide-eyed and stunned. A million thoughts and emotions bounced back and forth in her mind she couldn’t make sense of.
"...I-I am still in my uniform a-and look all messed up too..."
"Who cares? It’s my birthday. I decide what’s messy and elegant. I would dance with you even if you look like a zombie."
He bent over, gently taking her hand in his. Dropping a small peck to the back of her hand, he smiled.
"Now the celebration shall begin."
