Chapter 227: A Pledge of Marriage

Chapter 227: A Pledge of Marriage

Vera Xavier: "..."

’Young Master Nathan, do you even know how to talk? I really want to punch you! I’m clearly a beautiful genius, but you make me sound like I’m bustless and brainless!’

She couldn’t help but retort, "If I’m so awful, then why do you still want to marry me?"

"I just happen to like bustless and brainless women. You fit the criteria perfectly," Nathaniel Nathan said flatly.

At this, the corners of his lips quirked upward.

She thought their first encounter was after she moved to the city. Little did she know, they had already met back when she was living in the countryside.

On that occasion, he had been severely injured during a mission and had taken refuge in an endless bamboo forest. That’s when he encountered her, on her way up the mountain to dig for winter bamboo shoots. She probably never even realized that as she was digging, her hoe had accidentally flown from her grasp and struck the drug lord hunting him, giving him the breathing room he needed to finish the man with a single blow.

The situation had been critical, but she remained completely oblivious, thinking her hoe had merely fallen into a ravine. She never saw him, but he got a clear look at her.

’The only way to repay a debt for saving one’s life is to offer oneself in marriage. But this silly girl didn’t have the slightest inkling of that.’

Vera Xavier was at a loss for words. ’If that was his idea of a romantic confession, it was horrifying! Could I tell him I don’t want to accept his love letter?’

Nathaniel Nathan placed a helping of food into her bowl. "Your college entrance exams are coming up. Even though the questions won’t be too hard for you, all the other kids eat well to stay sharp beforehand, and you’re no exception. Eat up."

Vera Xavier pursed her lips. She instantly understood that for all his trash talk, his concern for her was genuine.

But as she looked at the food piled high as a mountain in her bowl, she got the distinct impression of being fattened up like a pig. ’Forget it. I’m not going to stoop to his level,’ she decided. ’I’ll just eat!’

Nathaniel Nathan drove her directly back to the residential compound. When she got home, Zachary Preston hadn’t returned yet, and Rona Langdon had once again invited Alden and a few others over to play mahjong.

Vera Xavier’s gaze toward Rona Langdon turned colder. The feeling was mutual; Rona Langdon couldn’t stand the sight of her and launched into a tirade of thinly veiled insults. Vera simply ignored her and went upstairs. She had already eaten dinner, so she couldn’t be bothered with Rona Langdon.

Rona Langdon had been waiting for Vera to come cook. After grumbling and cursing for a good while with no sign of her coming downstairs, and not having the nerve to go upstairs and confront her, Rona had no choice but to break up the mahjong game and make something to eat herself.

As the game broke up, Alden fanned the flames. "Rona, you’re just too patient. If my girl ever dared to pull something like that, I’d break her legs!"

Rona Langdon snorted. "She only dares to act this way because her father has her back!"

Alden said with a look of disdain, "Aren’t you supposed to be the one in charge of this house? If you act like this, you’ll have no authority at all!"

Rona Langdon just smiled without another word. After seeing Alden off, she felt even more vexed. Zachary Preston refused to hand over his salary and instead wanted her to get a job, an idea she was dead set against. He had given her a bit of money this time for Master Nathan’s birthday, but that was hardly a long-term solution.

She had been a housewife for too many years, and her life was far too comfortable. ’I am not going to work! No way. I have to find a way to solve this.’

Just then, the guard from the compound gate came knocking. "Mrs. Preston, a message just came in. It says Cara Preston is being detained at the police station for two days. They’re asking you to bring her a change of clothes."

Normally, the police station wouldn’t notify the family about a detention. The only reason they did so this time was that Nathaniel Nathan believed they had to pay a price for bullying Vera Xavier.
