Chapter 432 - 433: Inspecting the Pharmaceutical Factory, Encountering an Old Acquaintance
Chapter 432 - 433: Inspecting the Pharmaceutical Factory, Encountering an Old Acquaintance
"President Johnson, how can they do such a thing? It’s so outrageous! So shameless!" Vivian Abbey was dumbfounded, never having expected these people to resort to this.
Sienna inwardly sighed in relief.
"Are these people that desperate for money? How could they joke about something so serious! Aren’t they afraid it will really bring a curse upon their own child?"
"Exactly!"
"People who don’t know any better might actually think the pharmaceutical factory’s drugs killed someone."
"I said Eastminster Pharmaceutical Factory couldn’t be involved; they’re a major, long-established factory..."
Sienna decided she would visit her mentor that evening and treat him to dinner. It was thanks to him that she’d spotted the flaw today.
The onlookers all had phones, and many were filming. With the internet so pervasive these days, if she and those two were really taken to the Police Station, they’d never be able to clear their names.
"Hello, I want to report them. Please arrest them both!" Sienna said.
What corpse? It was just a child-sized mannequin, the kind commonly found in the children’s section of department stores. They were audacious, weren’t they? Trying to scam money with something like that.
If they’d encountered someone with a guilty conscience, they probably would have been tricked into paying hush money.
The policeman’s expression was a bit odd, and Sienna couldn’t help but study him more closely.
"That’s right! They must be brought to justice. Scum like them—who knows how many people they’ve victimized."
"What’s wrong with you, officer? Everything’s clear now, why haven’t you arrested them?"
Sienna also asked, "The evidence is conclusive. Why haven’t they been arrested? Officer, is there a problem?"
The policeman glanced at Sienna, coughed lightly, and said to his two younger colleagues, "What are you standing around for? Hurry up and take them away!"
"Yes, Captain Hood!"
The two young officers produced handcuffs to arrest the two fraudsters, only to discover they had already fled more than a hundred meters.
Just when everyone thought they had escaped, the two criminals’ knees buckled, and they tumbled to the ground. The policemen chased them down and handcuffed them. The crowd erupted in applause, cheering that the villains were finally being brought to justice.
The police departed, and the crowd, having witnessed a satisfying resolution, began to disperse. For Sienna, however, the matter was far from over.
"President Johnson, what should we do with this mannequin?" Vivian Abbey asked, looking at the figure lying on the ground.
"Keep it for now!"
Amos Carter smiled. "President Johnson, that was quite a scare, but thankfully it’s over! You’re amazing—you solved it the moment you arrived!"
"People these days... they’re just terrible, thinking up such devious ways to make money. My uncle is at the Police Station. I’ll definitely talk to him when I get back and have him make sure those lowlifes are severely punished!"
Sienna found Amos Carter truly exasperating. He had absolutely no ability; if it weren’t for his family connections, she would have fired him long ago.
"If something like this happens again, try to control the situation first, and at least prevent such a large crowd from gathering."
"Understood."
Sienna looked at Amos Carter, trying hard to find some redeeming qualities. At least he was obedient.
Since she had made the trip, Sienna inspected the Pharmaceutical Factory, eventually heading to the Research and Development Department. The department had been hit hard by the special formula leak incident, and its research capabilities were a shadow of their former self.
Sienna fondly recalled when Kenneth Brown was in charge. He handled everything so well that she barely had to worry. She’d heard Kenneth had returned to his hometown and wondered how he was doing.
Thinking of Kenneth, Sienna couldn’t help but blame Adrian Desmond. That man had truly caused so much suffering. She hoped Kenneth could recover from the blow and start a new life.
"President Johnson, don’t touch that!" a short man suddenly exclaimed.
"Huh?"
"That drug is toxic; don’t touch it." The man walked over, took the glass bottle containing a pink liquid, and placed it on a higher shelf.
"I’m sorry, I wasn’t paying attention." Sienna took a small step back, afraid she might touch something else.
"President Johnson, do you remember me?"
"You are...?"
"Reggie Dewey!"
Sienna searched her memory for the name but drew a blank. Reggie Dewey adjusted his glasses and introduced himself, "My name is Reggie Dewey. I also attended your wedding to former Manager Brown, President Johnson."
"Oh, really?" Sienna gave a wry smile. She hadn’t expected anyone to still remember Kenneth Brown.
"Don’t you want to know about Manager Brown?" Reggie Dewey asked.
Sienna chuckled softly. "I’m sure he’s doing very well."
"Manager Brown also started a pharmaceutical factory, though it’s quite small. When I last saw him, he seemed to be short on capital; he’d even mortgaged his house... Manager Brown is very capable. I believe his factory will grow quickly once he overcomes this financial hurdle."
Sienna wondered what kind of relationship this Reggie Dewey had with Kenneth Brown to bring him up in front of her like this. Did he have some ulterior motive?
However, Kenneth Brown was a man she absolutely could not get involved with now!
Adrian Desmond had always been hostile towards her ex-fiance.
If Adrian found out she still had any connection to Kenneth Brown, Kenneth’s life would become miserable, because Adrian would undoubtedly make trouble for him.
"...Has the Research and Development Department developed any new drugs recently?" Sienna changed the subject.
Hearing this, the department members lowered their heads, taking it as a reproach.
No one dared to answer. Reggie Dewey, however, spoke honestly, "The department’s capabilities are a far cry from what they used to be. We haven’t developed any new drugs recently, and we are deeply ashamed."
Sienna swept her gaze over the Research and Development Department staff, her look conveying pressure. "Eastminster Pharmaceutical Factory is a business, not a charity. If your work performance remains like this, then there will be no need for Eastminster Pharmaceutical Factory to have a Research and Development Department!"
Reggie Dewey said, "Yes, we will remember your words, President Johnson!"
"Work hard. Eastminster Group doesn’t support freeloaders. However, if you can all make valuable contributions to Eastminster Group, you will be rewarded accordingly."
Sienna reprimanded them, but she also made sure to offer some encouragement.
"Yes!"
After some thought, Reggie Dewey said, "President Johnson, I plan to start research on medication for infectious diseases. I hope you can approve it."
Although Sienna had studied medicine and possessed some knowledge of pharmacology, she was not an expert. "I’m not very familiar with that area. You should discuss the specifics with your department head." Sienna had always refrained from involving herself in the actual operations of Eastminster Pharmaceutical Factory.
"They won’t approve it!"
Sienna murmured, "Oh, is that so..."
"But I believe it’s crucial for us to conduct research in this area. I’ve reviewed a lot of data, and infectious diseases have become increasingly prevalent in recent years. If we could develop a medication targeting these types of infectious diseases, it would be a significant boon for our company..."
