Chapter 56
Chapter 56
Serena
The next day dawned with a heaviness mirroring the weight in my heart. As I walked through our makeshift camp, I noticed Alexei sitting alone, his usual lively eyes dull and clouded with sadness. Guilt gnawed at me for the harsh words I had spoken to him the day before.
Approaching him, I hesitated before sitting down beside him. "Alexei," I began, my voice softer than before, "I... I didn't mean to hurt you yesterday."
He glanced at me, pain and understanding in his eyes. "It's alright, Serena. You had every right to be angry."
But it wasn't all right, and I knew it. There was more to his sorrow than just my words. "No, it's not just that. I can see you're hurting, and I'm sorry for what Tori did to you."
Alexei's gaze dropped, and he sighed. "I thought she was different, Serena. I trusted her above anything else. But she betrayed me too. She dumped me like a trash, as if I was nothing in her life."
My heart sank for him. I could feel the weight of his disappointment. "I'm sorry, Alexei. I didn't want any of this to happen."
He looked up at me, a hint of a smile on his lips. "You're a good friend, Serena. I appreciate that."
As I sat there beside him, I couldn't shake the anger that simmered within me toward Tori. It wasn't just about her betrayal of me; I long expected that to happen. But instead, the pain she caused Alexei, a person who had put his trust in her above anything else.
"You deserve someone who values you, Alexei," I said, my voice firm. "Someone who sees the depth of your feelings and reciprocates them. Tori may not have realized what she lost, but it's her loss, not yours."
He nodded, a quiet acknowledgment of my words. The weight of the situation hung in the air, and I wished there was more I could do for him. The complexities of love and betrayal were unraveling around us, and all I could offer was my empathy and understanding.
There was a brief silence before he spoke again, surprising me. "Congratulations on your wedding, by the way."
I blinked, momentarily taken aback. "Oh, thanks," I replied, unsure of how to navigate this unexpected turn in the conversation.
"I mean it," he continued, a small smile playing on his lips. "I hope you and Damon find the happiness Tori and I couldn't."
I nodded, grateful for his genuine words. "I appreciate that, Alexei, and I can't even imagine how you're feeling right now."
He looked away, his gaze fixed on the distant horizon. "You were right, Serena. I put my trust in her, and she let me down. It's my fault for not seeing it sooner."
My empathy for him deepened. "You deserve better, Alexei. You don’t need a mate like that.”
He nodded, a heavy sigh escaping his lips. "I know, but despite everything, I can't help but still love her. It's like an ache that won't go away.” He met my gaze, the pain evident in his eyes. "But I've decided to teach myself how to unlove her. It's the only way I can move forward."
I wished there was more I could do for my friend, but sometimes, all we can offer is our support as those we care about navigate the complexities of their own emotions.
In that moment, I felt sorry for him. Despite the hurtful revelations and shattered trust, he was still dealing with lingering love. Without thinking, I hugged him, silently showing sympathy. Alexei hesitated before accepting the embrace, and as I held him, I sensed his vulnerability. Emotions, from regret to sorrow, melded into a shared understanding between us.
Just as we found comfort in our embrace, Damon interrupted, his footsteps shattering the peaceful moment. Alexei and I released each other, the weight of the situation lingering in the air.
"Hey," Damon greeted, his eyes shifting between us.
"Hey!” Alexei said. In a courteous gesture, he excused himself. “I should go. Thanks, Serena.”
As he walked away, a heavy silence surrounded us. Damon and I exchanged glances.
“I really feel sorry for Alexei. He didn’t deserve any of that. Gosh, my sister can be such a bitch!”
Damon nodded, understanding the complexity of the situation. Yet, beneath his agreement, I noticed a subtle hint of jealousy creeping into his gaze. The air between us felt charged with emotions.
As we watched Alexei disappear, an unspoken tension hung in the atmosphere. I sensed Damon's uneasiness, which he tried his best to hide.
Damon cleared his throat and said, “Yeah, it's just messed up. Let's hope he finds someone who appreciates him.”
His forced casualness couldn't completely conceal the possessiveness lingering in his words, hinting at a deeper concern that he wasn't ready to express openly.
I just hope that wasn't the case. Alexei needed me as a friend, yet my heart belonged to Damon alone.
