The Alpha's Cinderella

Chapter 57

Chapter 57

Damon

The morning sun painted the campsite in warm hues, casting a serene atmosphere over our makeshift breakfast table. Ashford and I huddled together, plates filled with campfire-cooked eggs and bacon. The enticing aroma blended with the earthy scent of the surrounding forest. Tents stood nearby, and the gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze created a peaceful backdrop.

Absentmindedly, I stabbed at my eggs with a fork, my thoughts far from the cheerful banter that usually accompanied our morning meals. Sensing my somber mood, Ashford attempted to inject some humor into the atmosphere.

"You know, Damon, these eggs taste better when you're in a good mood," he teased, a mischievous glint in his eyes.

I mustered a half-hearted smile. "I'm just not in the mood today, Ash."

Curiosity etched on his face, Ashford prodded further. "What's eating at you, dude? Tell me."

I sighed, my gaze drifting across the camp where Serena and Alexei were engrossed in conversation. They seemed so friendly with each other, but all I felt was a twinge of jealousy.

Ashford followed my gaze and raised an eyebrow. "Trouble in paradise?"

I didn't answer, my eyes fixed on Serena and Alexei. Ashford leaned in, lowering his voice.

"You've got to tell me, dude. What's going on?"

Finally tearing my gaze away, I met Ashford's eyes, a bitter smirk playing on my lips. "Do I really need to spell it out for you?"

Ashford leaned back, realization crossing his face. "Ah, I see. It's about Serena and Alexei, isn't it?"

I nodded, unable to articulate the jumble of emotions inside me.

He chuckled knowingly. "Dude, relax. They're just friends. Serena is your wife, after all. She’s carrying your pup inside her. What proof do you need to see for you to not doubt her love for you?"

I scoffed, my insecurity bubbling to the surface. "But what did I ever do for her? Alexei was there for her when everyone in her pack turned her back on her. He saved her when I wasn’t there to rescue her."

Ashford's expression softened, and he placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Damon, Serena loves you. Don't forget that. Alexei might have been there during tough times, but you're the one she chose to be with. You're her present and future."

I went back to my plate as I stole glances at him. It wasn’t Serena or Ashford’s fault that I was like this. In fact, I acknowledged that the problem was with me and not them. Serena never gave me a reason to doubt her love while I witnessed Alexei’s dedication to his ex-mate, Tori. I knew that Serena was just trying to be supportive and yet I couldn’t help but feel jealous still.

After a momentary silence, Ashford continued, “Let me tell you something, Damon. Serena knows where her heart belongs. She gave it to you. She chose you. Don’t ever forget that."

I smirked back, a hint of relief washing over me, but I chose not to say anything further. “Now, let's finish this breakfast PRONTO! I heard your father would take you to train today. I wonder what type of training he would subject you to.”

After breakfast, Dad gestured for me to follow him to the edge of a stunning cliff. The morning sun painted the landscape with warm hues as we stood at the edge, overlooking a vast wilderness that stretched far into the distance. The air carried a refreshing scent, and the distant hope that somehow, this training would bring something good in the future.

"Damon," Dad said, his voice carrying a mix of wisdom and determination. "Today marks the beginning of your training. A journey that will test not just your abilities but the essence of who you are."

I settled into a big boulder, anticipation building within me. "What's the plan?"

Dad leaned back, his gaze fixed on the distant horizon. "We'll start with a test of your shifting skills. I want you to jump off that cliff," he pointed to the towering precipice, "and shift to your wolf form mid-air."

My eyes widened at the challenge. "Jump off a cliff?" I exclaimed, a mix of excitement and nervousness bubbling within me.

Dad nodded. "Your ability to shift is a gift, Damon, but it needs to be honed. This cliff will be your first teacher. It will test your instincts, your reflexes, and your courage."

I took a deep breath, absorbing his words. Doubt overcame me, yet this was not the time to be a baby. I stepped to the edge of the cliff, took a deep breath, and said, "Alright, I'm ready."

A strong wind hit my face as I fell into nothingness. I tried hard to grab onto something, but I couldn't. I felt scared and didn't know what to think or do. It took me a couple of very short moments to understand that I was falling to my death.

And I had to do something. Quickly!

I closed my eyes and cleared my mind. Now was not the time to worry about anything else in the world. I needed to focus on bringing out the wolf inside me. If not, my soft brain would surely splatter on the ground.

I searched through the endless emptiness in my mind. And then, I saw a white light moving farther away from me. I chased after it, knowing it was the only way to survive. But just when I thought I caught it, the light moved far away from my reach.

"No!" I shouted. I was ready for the coming crash when I felt someone catch me. It was a brown wolf with a familiar scar on its left eye. The next thing I knew, I was on the ground, thankful to be alive.

After the daring jump and a narrow escape, we reconvened on the porch. Dad's expression was both stern and yet approving.

"Not bad for a first-timer. But remember, mastering your abilities is not just about survival. It's about control and finesse. A few more tries and you will surely get it right."

I nodded with determination. I was willing to learn and make myself stronger, and I was willing to do everything just to make it happen.

"Since you are not yet ready for the cliff shifting, for now, I want you to climb that rocky hill in your original form. Oh, and carry this," he handed me a pail filled with water, "without spilling a drop."

I furrowed my brow. "Up the rocky hill? With water? Without shifting to my wolf?" The challenge seemed daunting.

Dad's gaze remained steady. "Exactly. This phase is about discipline, precision, and understanding the limits of your abilities. Embrace the challenge, Damon. It's through adversity that we discover our true potential."

I looked at the challenge ahead with an unwavering spirit. If this was the only way for me to beat Romin, then I would be willing to carry gallons of water from that mountain peak if that was what it took to bring Romin to justice for running our lives.
