Ten Day Ultimatum

Chapter 399 Goat’s Hidden Truth

“You’re pulling my leg, right?” Terrestrial Goat pushed Terrestrial Tiger with a flustered expression. “You’re basically sending the two of us to our deaths!”

“What deaths?” Terrestrial Tiger said carelessly. “What are you afraid of? {Celestials}?”

“You!” Terrestrial Goat quickly glanced toward the door, feeling an uneasy sense of imminent danger. “Can you keep your voice down?!”

“I don’t care,” Terrestrial Tiger shrugged. “I just wanted to drag you in, but now Dog’s here too, so the three of us are in this together.”

“What do you mean ‘together’?!” Terrestrial Dog suddenly jumped to his feet. “Are you kidding me? When did I agree to do anything with you?”

Seeing Terrestrial Tiger’s serious expression, he looked at Terrestrial Goat. “What’s wrong with this Money-Draining Tiger?”

“Well…” Terrestrial Goat hesitated, “it’s probably related to Goat ge…”

“What about Goat ge?” Terrestrial Dog looked confused. “Isn’t he {Celestial Goat} now? Did he order you to stage a rebellion?”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Terrestrial Goat interrupted. “This has nothing to do with Goat ge. It’s entirely Terrestrial Tiger’s own idea.”

From Terrestrial Goat’s explanation, Terrestrial Dog got a general understanding of the situation.

“What…?” Terrestrial Dog frowned slightly after hearing Terrestrial Goat’s explanation. “You’re suspecting that Goat ge didn’t actually become {Celestial Goat}… and instead turned into an ordinary participant?”

“This is merely a speculation," Terrestrial Goat said. “But this Terrestrial Tiger is already planning a rebellion just because of a {speculation}.”

Terrestrial Dog still didn’t quite understand. “No… Money-Draining Tiger, what are you thinking? If you’re really sure that man called Qi Xia is Goat ge, shouldn’t you try talking to him?”

“Motherfu…” Terrestrial Tiger cursed under his breath. “And talk where? You know full well your immediate superior is within earshot. What if he overhears?”

“Then you still can’t talk about it here!” Terrestrial Dog blinked. “No, you shouldn’t talk about this anywhere! Do you want to die?”

“What’s the big deal?” Terrestrial Tiger scoffed. “{Celestials} have the same physical constitution as us, with the addition of some unusual powers… I think if we’re determined enough, rebellion won't be a problem at all..."

“No, no, no…” Terrestrial Dog shook his head frantically. “Terrestrial Tiger, listen to me first…”

“Go ahead.”

“Wasn’t… the whole point of us becoming {Earthly Branches} just to survive and escape?” Terrestrial Dog then glanced at Terrestrial Goat. The two of them now shared a single goal: to convince Terrestrial Tiger to drop this idea.

“That’s right. Money-Draining Tiger,” Terrestrial Goat nodded. “Just because you’re impulsive doesn’t mean we have to be. Wouldn’t it be better to stay here and ascend properly? You spent so long reaching Terrestrial-grade—are you really going to throw it all away?”

“Are you two idiots?” Terrestrial Tiger snapped. “We can’t become {Celestials}! Isn’t Goat ge’s example right in front of us? Even if we kill enough people, even if the {Celestial-grade} above us is vacant, we’ll still only be turned back into ordinary participants!”

“I’ve already said that’s just a speculation!" Terrestrial Goat said anxiously. “Money-Draining Tiger, we aren’t a hundred percent certain that Qi Xia is actually Goat ge. Didn’t Mortal Snake already volunteer to confirm his identity?”

“What else is there to confirm?” Terrestrial Tiger’s voice grew louder. “You, me, and that damn Snake all agree he might be. We’re the three who know Goat ge best! How can there be such a coincidence?”

Neither side could convince the other, and soon, silence fell over them.

“Wait a sec…” Terrestrial Dog spoke up, his gaze sharper than before. “I don’t really care about this {rebellion} anymore… But when you said {We can’t become Celestials}—is that really true?”

Terrestrial Tiger nodded solemnly. “Dog, think for yourself. In all these years that you’ve been {Earthly Branches}, have any {Terrestrials} ever actually become a {Celestial-grade}?”

“You can’t claim that,” Terrestrial Dog retorted. “We don’t live alongside the {Celestial-grades}, how do you know no {Terrestrial-grade} has successfully ascended?”

“Laozi’s got a one-track mind!” Terrestrial Tiger said. “I haven’t seen a single {successful promotion}, but I have seen one {failed}. Therefore, the probability of {failure} is one hundred percent.”

“You…!” Terrestrial Goat was left speechless by Terrestrial Tiger’s rogue reasoning.

While Terrestrial Dog’s expression shifted completely.

“Tiger… if we really can’t ascend to {Celestial-grades}… then things are going to get complicated,” he said, his tone turning serious. “I’ve been crawling and scrambling carefully all these years… if in the end there’s no happy outcome, then what about all the people I’ve killed? What about all my efforts? What was the point of showing up for work on time every day?”

“Terrestrial Dog… not you too…” Terrestrial Goat was shocked. “I thought you weren’t this kind of person…”

“In the past, I could disregard everything because it didn’t affect my interests. As long as I could clock out on time, I wanted nothing else,” Terrestrial Dog shook his head. “But now, if what Tiger says is true… then I have no choice but to reconsider everything…”

“You–You two, calm down…” Terrestrial Goat slowly raised a hand. “While I can sympathize, but… can we wait a little longer?”

“Wait for what?” Terrestrial Tiger asked.

“For Mortal Snake to confirm Qi Xia’s identity…” Terrestrial Goat replied nervously. “It’ll only take a couple days.”

“What’s the point of that?” Terrestrial Tiger said. “If that damned snake really confirms Qi Xia’s identity, then he’ll get caught up in this conflict too. But he’s a {Mortal}. Even though the three of us don’t exactly get along, do you really want him to die?”

“Being a {Mortal} doesn’t matter…” Terrestrial Goat shook his head. “But at least wait… we need to wait a little longer.”

“Ole Black…” Terrestrial Tiger slowly stood and stepped in front of Terrestrial Goat. “You seem a bit… off. Isn’t the situation already clear enough? Either you agree to discuss it with the two of us, or you leave and I’ll treat it as though you weren’t here tonight. Clear?”

“No…” Terrestrial Goat shook his head, looking at them with a very particular expression. “I won’t leave, and I won’t let you rebel.”

“Oh?” Terrestrial Dog let out a cold laugh upon hearing this. “So that’s how it is… The fact that you can neither leave nor agree can only mean one thing: you have another plan in mind, am I right?”
