Chapter 159: Great... More Zombies!
Chapter 159: Great... More Zombies!
Jason had Shantel in his arms as the day bled into the night and the moon took the place of the sun. Darkness shrouded everywhere and the majority of the people in this camp were fast asleep.
Jason didn’t know why but he couldn’t sleep even though Shantel had no problems falling asleep in his arms.
Jason sighed, something about this night felt different but he couldn’t wrap his head around it.
He knew that he had Chronos under his control but he didn’t know for how long.
Jason knew things he didn’t want to know and this was because he had absorbed the essence that made Chronos.
Of course, he couldn’t make things out just yet, it was all jumbled up but Jason knew he would piece it together eventually.
Jason wanted to inform Franklin and Clementine about what was happening but he didn’t know how they would react to it.
He couldn’t risk them compromising Shantel, he knew that she would prove to be invaluable if she had even more information.
Jason couldn’t believe it but he was missing Chronos, he would have engaged in a conversation with Chronos.
Jason wanted to get some fresh air and he removed his arms from around Shantel slowly.
This freed up his arm and all Shantel did in response was readjust herself but she was still sleeping.
Jason didn’t know the kind of day she had but it was clear that she got some relief by being with him which was a good thing.
Jason was hesitant, he didn’t know if it would be a good idea to step out because they might mistake this as him snooping.
"What is this feeling? Why am I feeling this way..." Jason thought to himself, that there was something that had changed in him.
Jason felt like a piece of his soul was missing but this might be because he was tired.
He didn’t care anymore and stepped out for some fresh air, the chilly weather gave him the sense of relief he sought.
Jason took a deep breath before sitting right in front of his tent and staring at the moon.
"Mom... Dad... I wonder if you two are alright," Jason thought to himself.
The man who hated his parents was now growing worried for them.
Jason could only chuckle at the irony because these were people who threw him away the moment he stopped living his life for them.
Jason knew he might not have made the best decisions in his life but parents were meant to show their children unconditional love even if they ended up like a bum.
Jason knew he never truly got the respect of his father as his father never treated him as an adult.
Jason was always a kid in his eyes but how could he ever measure up to his older brother?
Everything he did, he was compared to his older brother and everything escalated the moment his uncle died.
Jason shut down and didn’t care about what his parents thought anymore but he didn’t hate them. He thought he did then but looking back at it now, Jason understood where they were coming from.
Jason heard footsteps coming towards him and his eyes were fixed at the location in which it was heard from.
Jason didn’t know who or what it was but he was prepared to defend himself if the situation called for it.
He squinted his eyes, trying to make out what was in the darkness but Jaosn soon heaved a sigh of relief upon seeing it was a masked man approaching.
"You scared me there man," Jason said but the man was holding his neck, he couldn’t speak and Jason could hear the dripping of blood on the ground.
The man soon collapsed and Jason sprung to his feet, he rushed to him to see if he could save him but Jason saw that it was an artery that was severed.
There was nothing that he could do and upon closer observation, he saw it was tooth marks.
"Zombies!?" Jason thought, quickly looking around but there was nothing in sight.
Jason didn’t know if he should sound the alarm because if there were no zombies around then this wouldn’t look good in retrospect.
Jason happened to step out and find a body right outside his tent, that would raise questions. This was the last thing that Jason needed.
Jason stood up and made sure that no one saw him, he was glad he had the map with him and Jason utilized the scanning feature on the map to search for zombies and he couldn’t believe the amount of zombies headed right towards them.
"What the actual fuck?" Jason thought as the zombies were easily over fifty.
This was enough reason for Jason to let everyone know of the dangers that lurked.
He took the weapon from the corpse in front of him and fired a shot into the air.
This shot was to serve as an alarm as everyone woke up, shouting wouldn’t have been enough.
Jason needed a wider ranger because the lookouts were away from the camp so it was either they were dead or the zombies didn’t come in their direction.
In this case, they needed to head back right away because Jason knew that this could easily be the end of them.
They needed all hands on deck and what he experienced from Nexus was that it wasn’t something that he could use indefinitely.
If he used it now, he would be left feeling far too exhausted to fight back.
Jason knew he had to use Nexus only when his back was against the wall.
Everyone rushed out with their gun drawn and they saw the man dead on the floor and a gun in Jason’s head.
"You bastard!" A man barked but Jason had to explain the situation; before he could, the butt of the gun came crashing into the side of his head.
Jason stumbled to the ground and he heard the clicking of the gun, it was clear that this man intended to take his life.
"Hold your fire," A appeared out of the darkness because he knew that there was no way that Jason would kill this man in cold blood, there was no reason either.
"What is the meaning of this?" A asked and at this moment, Clementine and Franklin joined the fray.
"The zombies..." Jason muttered and Clementine was doing everything in her power not to lash out as they had no reason to put their hands on Jason.
"He was bitten," A masked man said as he inspected the corpse and that was when A realized the situation they were in.
"The zombies, they have found us," Jason said, holding his bloodied head.
The man who hit him quickly apologized as he helped Jason up.
However, the stitching of the wound would have to wait because they didn’t know what they were up against.
"Why did you fire the shot? They might have been passing by. This isn’t the first horde that has walked right past our camp," A asked Jason, seeking answers to what looked like a reckless decision.
"The blood... It leads right back to the camp," Jason pointed out as the zombies still had their sense of smell and as long as this man returned to the camp then the zombies were going to find them.
"That is a good observation," A commended Jason before raising his fist, prompting all of them to disperse.
"Are you okay?" Clementine asked and Jason nodded, it was just a small cut on the side of his head that didn’t impede his sight.
"I’m good," Jason responded but someone soon came out of his tent and it was no other than Shantel.
Clementine looked back before returning her gaze to Jason, she read the situation wrong because she assumed that the only reason Shantel was in Jason’s tent was to have sex.
She just told Jason about how women manipulate men through sex so it was a tad bit disappointing seeing that he didn’t listen to her.
"Are you okay Jason?" Shantel asked, she wasn’t clueless as to what was happening as she could hear the conversation that had taken place.
"Ha! Shantel, I’m great. Just getting hit across the head, it is a regular day for me," Jason joked and Shantel giggled.
"Follow me, I will fix you up," Shantel reassured him.
Jason looked at Clementine before walking away from her and Clementine watched in silence.
"You need to be more careful, the men here aren’t known for their patience," Shantel said.
"Now you tell me? Where were you ten minutes ago..." Jason teased her.
The chemistry he had managed to strike up with her in such a short time was impressive but Jason knew that the urgency of the situation would call for them to eventually aid these people.
"Clementine, we need to join them..." Franklin reminded her and Clementine snapped right back to reality as she took a deep breath before saying.
"You’re right, my bad. Let’s go gun down those zombies," Clementine said, leading the way.
But what was the point of Jason leaving with Shantel when the wound he had wasn’t even serious?
What was he scheming?
