Chapter 273: An Important Matter
Chapter 273: An Important Matter
"Are you going to haul Salt Crystal Stones again tomorrow?"
Wu Yue asked, turning to the Beastman beside her.
Yuan Lang nodded. "I have to deliver the witch and the Clan Leader’s message to my Father tomorrow, and tell everyone to be more careful during the transport."
Pressing her lips together, Wu Yue decided to tell Yuan Lang about the taro. "I’m sure you’ve already heard about me and Qingcao running into that wild boar today."
Yuan Lang frowned. "Of course I heard. You two shouldn’t be running up the mountain without good reason. The wild beasts here are on a completely different level than the ones back home."
Wu Yue nodded emphatically. "We know. We just thought the Beastman Warriors had already cleared the rear mountain, so we let our guard down. But that’s not what I wanted to talk about. Do you remember the taro we found during the last group gathering?"
Yuan Lang raised a dark eyebrow. He recalled her mention of the wild boar attack, and now she was bringing up the taro they had found last time...
"Are you saying that the place on the rear mountain attracting the wild boars—that huge patch—is all taro?"
Wu Yue’s eyes sparkled as she looked at him. "Yes."
With that, she pulled a fist-sized, earthy lump from the small woven bag at her side. "Take a look at this."
The moment he held it, Yuan Lang recognized the familiar texture and appearance. It was taro.
A hint of joy touched his features. Having once commanded a million soldiers, he knew exactly how crucial food was to a collective.
"With all this taro, we should have no problem getting through the rainy season."
But Wu Yue shook her head. "Look closer."
Yuan Lang frowned. ’Did I see it wrong?’
He lowered his head to inspect it more carefully. At first, he found nothing, but then he turned it over and saw something amiss.
The Beastman’s deep-set eyes narrowed instantly. "This taro is already spoiling!"
Wu Yue’s expression was also grim. "This is what I’m worried about. You’re all busy hauling salt, but for some reason, the taro here has already started to mature, and some is even starting to spoil.
If we don’t dig them up now, by the time you’re finished hauling the Salt Crystal Stones, this entire batch of food will be completely useless."
’To let such a huge patch of taro go to waste... I’d never be able to forgive myself.’
But...
"I thought about telling the Clan Leader and the witch about the taro, but if the witches from the other tribes arrive, any major move by our tribe will surely draw their attention..."
Yuan Lang frowned. "We have to keep the taro a secret. If we can’t mobilize the whole tribe, then we’ll dig it up ourselves."
Wu Yue gave a wry smile. "There aren’t many people we can trust right now. I still think we should tell the witch and the Clan Leader, but we’ll have to be very careful about who we choose to do the digging."
Yuan Lang looked at her. "Food and salt are both of utmost importance to a tribe. I’m sure the witch and the Clan Leader will be even more cautious than we are."
With that, he turned and headed back the way they came. Wu Yue followed the Beastman toward the witch’s cave.
The Half beastman Warriors guarding the cave entrance looked puzzled as the pair returned. "Didn’t you two just leave? Why are you back?"
Wu Yue looked at the Half beastman Warriors. "Uncle, could you please pass on a message? We have something very important to discuss with the witch."
