Chapter 966 - 965: Extortion
Chapter 966 - 965: Extortion
They used a term from the underworld to show their psychological approval of Xu Ke.
Xu Ke didn’t correct their form of address. Instead, he followed their words and said, "Just five hundred million, is that a lot? Our casino, can’t we make this much in a day’s turnover?"
Xu Ke looked at the man who was speaking. The man, meeting Xu Ke’s gaze, nodded firmly, "We can."
The person standing opposite Xu Ke was trembling with anger at this blatant extortion. They didn’t think that the man rapidly blinking his eyes wasn’t noticed, but what did that mean? It meant they were indeed using intimidation, but with less combat power, they could only pretend to be blind and see nothing.
"But five hundred million is really too much. Where would we get that kind of money? If we had such a large sum, we wouldn’t be out here doing this," the man standing opposite said discontentedly.
"But what you’re telling me has nothing to do with me." Xu Ke looked at the person across from him with a smile that was as refreshing as a spring breeze, but the words that came out were as biting as a cold wind.
Xu Ke’s words left the other side speechless, and the flow of air seemed to lessen because of this sentence.
"But what you’re asking for is very unreasonable. We simply can’t produce that much," the person on the other side said somewhat aggrievedly.
"Isn’t it? Before you went out looking for trouble, didn’t you calculate how much compensation you’d have to pay if you failed? What makes you think you would only profit and never incur losses?" Xu Ke was utterly baffled by their reasoning. Who can guarantee they will never fail? Their lack of preparation for failure is none of his business; he was just a weak and innocent victim.
Xu Ke once again left them speechless, unable to say a word.
Though it’s true that’s the reasoning, they had indeed never failed before. Who at the start would think they’d fail? People do things believing they’ll succeed, not knowing today they’d hit a brick wall.
But no matter what they thought, hitting a brick wall today was a fact. They could only admit defeat, but five hundred million was indeed too difficult. They truly did not have that much money.
"Five hundred million is really too much, we simply don’t have that kind of money, can’t produce it." As time ticked away, the person standing opposite Xu Ke finally couldn’t bear it, closed his eyes, steeled his heart, and spoke loudly.
"Now is the time to save your life, not the time to play tricks and hide secret funds. I hope you can be honest and not do anything where you value money over life. You should know that hiding your money isn’t much use if you don’t have your life to spend it, and don’t hope that I won’t take action against you. I’m no saintly philanthropist; I repay grievances with retribution. Whoever makes me uncomfortable for a moment, I will make uncomfortable for a lifetime." Xu Ke said, looking at them with a smile.
Though Xu Ke wore a smile on his face, no one present dared to joke around with him, really considering him a good-tempered person. Did they not see the person who disregarded Xu Ke, now lying unconscious on the ground?
The people across from him once again fell into silence, silently forming a circle to discuss anew.
Here, someone standing behind Xu Ke sensibly pushed a single sofa to him, along with a table laden with fruits and various kinds of alcohol. There was even a lackey who somehow produced a fan to cool Xu Ke.
Though the casino had air conditioning and it wasn’t hot at all, Xu Ke didn’t stop his men from diligently attending to him. Instead, he sat calmly, even half-closed his eyes, waiting for the others to come up with a decision.
Initially, Xu Ke’s goal wasn’t those five hundred million. He set the price so high at the beginning for two reasons: one was indeed to intimidate them, and the other was because starting with a bottom line set so low made it easier to negotiate conditions.
Xu Ke closed his eyes, his fingers rhythmically tapping on the table, making a tapping sound.
Normally, such a sound would go unnoticed in a casino, but now, with only the people across the table whispering in the smallest voices, Xu Ke’s fingertips on the table became particularly piercing.
The people who were discussing with their backs to Xu Ke froze, speeding up their discussion, quickly resolving it, and facing Xu Ke again.
"Have you finished discussing? What is your decision?" Xu Ke didn’t open his eyes.
"We can, at most, only scrape together three hundred million; any more and we really don’t have it. Even if you kill us, we don’t have it." The person across sent a representative to look at Xu Ke and said.
"Three hundred million, huh." Xu Ke slowly drew out his words. From the moment Xu Ke first spoke, the people standing in front of him had been nervous, and now, as Xu Ke finished speaking, their hearts leapt to their throats.
"You’re coming up with three hundred million, but I’ve still lost two hundred million. So, what should we do about that? How about this: there are twenty of you here. This two hundred million debt, you can split it evenly. Each of you writes a promissory note for ten million. Then you’ll all work for me; I’ll provide food and accommodation, but your wages will go to offset the debt you owe. Once you’ve paid off this debt, you’ll be free. That’s one option. Another option is leaving your souls here permanently. Two choices, the decision is now in your hands." Xu Ke said.
Xu Ke’s options were almost no choice at all, leaving only two paths: either become people under his command or become a dead body.
These troublemakers emerging were mostly young people. After all, only those who don’t know fear due to ignorance would appear before Xu Ke, taking such reckless actions. Otherwise, anyone else simply wouldn’t choose to make trouble here.
Recently, the news of the casino changing owners had spread all over the underworld, but exactly what kind of person the new owner was and how they handled affairs was unknown. And yet they had rashly made this decision.
This self-sacrificing behavior was like carving the words "altruistic allegiance" on their foreheads.
If they truly wanted low risk with high return, they should have had enough patience and immense capabilities.
Doing this without understanding anything, wasn’t it plainly looking for trouble?
