Chapter 934 - 933: Looking Down on Others
Chapter 934 - 933: Looking Down on Others
Upon hearing praise from her father, especially in a setting with so many people, He Qing’s cheeks turned bright red like apples, incredibly cute.
She felt extremely embarrassed, not daring to lift her eyes. For a moment, she even felt like the gazes upon her were flames, making her cheeks burn, and for once, she felt a little shy.
"Daddy, stop it, or I won’t know how to face anyone," He Qing said coyly and bashfully.
He Qing’s father laughed at his daughter’s bashful appearance and then pushed her to the front stage.
Xu Ke was nestled in an inconspicuous corner, watching the scene unfold. His heart was unmoved; he even felt a bit sleepy. Truth be told, even though he looked lively, his mind had already wandered off.
But at the banquet, Xu Ke’s demeanor seemed quite convincing. However, when someone came to chat with him, upon learning what Xu Ke did and how he managed to appear today, their gaze lost its admiration and only disdain remained. Some even thought that speaking to Xu Ke lowered their own status, feeling deceived. If it weren’t for the fact he helped He Qing, they would’ve embarrassed him right then.
Nevertheless, those who came to chat with him ultimately distanced themselves upon discovering the truth, creating a vacuum around Xu Ke. Even the household staff, having seen that He Chen’s relationship with Xu Ke didn’t seem great, weren’t particularly respectful towards him, instead showing disdain.
"Some people just have such thick skin. Don’t they know their status? Do they belong in a place like this? Without a hint of self-awareness, if it were me, I’d have turned and left, not sticking around to make a fool of myself."
The party had just begun, and the venue wasn’t too busy yet. There’s always one or two people looking to slack off and chat. Xu Ke’s presence had become a hot spot for gossip, like an open tourist attraction. The only constant was Xu Ke; the servers around him were rotated out one after another, making it impossible for Xu Ke to have peace.
"If you have something to say, turn around and say it to my face. There’s no need for this roundabout gossip. There are plenty who can’t stand me, but it’s the first time I’ve seen someone who doesn’t even dare speak directly but only makes snide remarks from the side."
As he spoke, Xu Ke glanced critically at the two gossiping servers, making them blush with embarrassment. They hadn’t expected Xu Ke to confront them directly, revealing a flash of guilt, but these feelings quickly disappeared. They believed they were right and had no reason to be ashamed.
One of them straightened up and retorted, "What’s wrong with what I said? Didn’t you only get the chance to attend this banquet because you helped Young Master He and Miss He? You knew very well your status doesn’t compare to others here, yet you dressed so flamboyantly to draw attention. I’ve seen many like you. I know your intentions. Don’t you feel your behavior is excessive, bringing shame to Young Master and Miss, and yourself?"
Because of their job, they’re usually the ones being scolded, but this was the first time he could berate others. Saying these words made him unusually excited.
In such a luxurious setting filled with celebs and successful people, he, a humble server, was boldly criticizing and even scolding an invited guest, filling him with a bizarre thrill.
Xu Ke observed the man’s excited and ugly expression, his lips curving into a slight smile.
"Don’t make it sound so righteous. To be blunt, you’re just jealous of me. You think I struck it lucky, having helped the siblings, which is why I’m here as a guest today."
Xu Ke set down his food and looked at him with an inscrutable smile.
"Seeing so many people fawning over the lobby manager made you envious. You refuse to admit it’s because of my excellence. Instead, you think if it weren’t for my luck in dressing well, no one would notice or talk to me."
Letting out a sneering laugh, Xu Ke blatantly voiced the buried thoughts of the two in public.
The servers’ faces turned into a colorful palette, showing every imaginable hue within moments.
"I’ve met many people like you, honestly. Every one of you assumes you’re meant to be the star of the world but never pause to ask yourself if you’re worthy."
"You think I’m just lucky, and everything seems unfair, but I’m telling you, I did get lucky. If you’re unhappy about it, why not try for your own luck? If you can’t, stop being bitter. You might get noticed serving more plates, and who knows, you could end up a Cinderella story too."
The deeply hidden thoughts Xu Ke revealed surrounded them with immense shame, making them quickly check if anyone overheard Xu Ke’s words.
Realizing no one was paying attention, they relaxed.
Perhaps because Xu Ke exposed their thoughts, their retort was filled with unabashed jealousy and hate.
"Watch your mouth. Don’t think you’re big just because you helped Young Master and Miss He. We, brothers, have eaten more salt than you’ve eaten rice. If we want to mess with you, do you think you can stand tall in front of us?"
"You’ve just hit the social scene; we’ve been around. Don’t think you can lord over us with that favor. If we want, you could be thrown out right now. Believe it or not?"
Facing off, they taunted Xu Ke. The area was a vacuum, after all — throw a few threats. No one cared.
Content with their threats, they expected Xu Ke to look shocked, but were utterly surprised when Xu Ke laughed.
