Chapter 903: Ning City
Chapter 903: Ning City
Looking at Brother Zhao, Xu Ke guessed that he might not know why he was suddenly transferred either, so he didn’t ask further. However, the matter lingered in his mind, with a mix of suspicion and unease about the sudden transfer order, fearing that his identity might be exposed.
He wasn’t worried about others targeting him, just concerned that Lin Mengyao and Yu Xia might encounter danger. As for Ariel, Xu Ke wasn’t worried at all; Ariel was raised under her father’s guidance, and had seen all kinds of situations. It was only after she started following him that she restrained herself a bit; otherwise, one might wonder who should be more afraid of whom upon meeting her.
But Xu Ke’s doubts were short-lived, as a phone call from the old drunkard unraveled the mystery.
"If I’m not mistaken, you should have received a transfer order to Ning City." The old drunkard’s voice came through the phone.
"Did you do this?" Xu Ke raised an eyebrow and asked.
"Yes."
"Why did you do it?" Xu Ke asked, puzzled.
"You’re a good person with good abilities. Even without my recommendation, you could climb up on your own. But you’ve helped me multiple times, and also helped my family. I’m not someone who can’t be grateful or reciprocate, but I have nothing else to offer you. The only thing I can do is reduce the time you need to climb up within my capabilities." The old drunkard explained.
"Why didn’t you give an opportunity like this to Brother Zhao? You two have known each other longer, and he’s probably helped you much more than I have." Xu Ke continued to ask.
"He’s not suitable; he’s too anxious. He should settle down at his current position for two years. You’re different from him. Staying here is purely a waste of your time; there’s no need for it." The old drunkard replied.
Xu Ke seemed to accept the old drunkard’s explanation and appropriately expressed his gratitude, but he still harbored doubts. He felt that the reason for the old drunkard sending him away wasn’t so simple, but he didn’t know why exactly. So, he handed over the investigation of the old drunkard to his outside ally and decided to follow the transfer order to Ning City.
As Xu Ke boarded the green train to Ning City, far away in a small town hospital where the old drunkard was healing, he gazed through the window with a weathered expression.
"I don’t know whether my decision was right or wrong this time, so I’ve left the outcome to you. Can you still watch over me, dear heavens?" The old drunkard murmured, "Are you willing to be on my side this time?"
The ward was empty, no one heard the old drunkard’s words.
Meanwhile, on the other side, as Xu Ke stepped out of the train station, he saw a person dressed entirely in black with sunglasses standing outside. Seeing Xu Ke emerge, the person walked towards him.
"You must be Xu Ke, right? I’m with Brother Xiong, my name is Lu Xun. Just call me Brother Lu. We’ll be working together from now on; work hard and don’t let Brother Xiong down."
After saying this, the man patted Xu Ke’s shoulder with his hand, exerting pressure and squeezing Xu Ke’s shoulder firmly. His eyes, hidden behind the sunglasses, stared intently at Xu Ke’s face. Seeing Xu Ke’s expression remain unchanged, as if he didn’t even feel his grip, Lu Xun’s gaze at Xu Ke finally held a bit more warmth.
"You’re quite good. Come with me; Brother Xiong has arranged a place for you." Lu Xun loosened his grip, glanced at Xu Ke’s suitcase, and said.
"Thank you, Brother Xiong, and thank you, Brother Lu. Otherwise, I would still be lugging my suitcase around, looking for a place." Xu Ke said, carrying his luggage and walking behind Lu Xun.
"It’s no big deal. Brother Xiong always treats people well. As long as you work for him, you won’t miss out on benefits." Lu Xun said, driving smoothly on the spacious roads.
"Brother Lu, I don’t know anything here as I’m new. I’ll need your guidance." After chatting a bit more, Xu Ke tentatively said.
"I know what you’re worried about. As long as you work hard, Brother Xiong won’t mistreat you. Everyone under Brother Xiong is like family; we help each other in times of need. Don’t worry. You seem young, probably the youngest; we’ll take care of you." Lu Xun said glancing at Xu Ke.
Upon hearing this, Xu Ke’s face showed a faint smile. Seeing this expression, Brother Lu, who had been observing Xu Ke in the car, also smiled faintly, thinking Xu Ke still seemed a bit naive.
The place Brother Xiong arranged for Xu Ke wasn’t bad; amenities were well-set, and the security downstairs seemed decent. The apartment was a standard one-bedroom, one-bathroom setup, not luxurious but comfortable. It looked clean and bright at first glance.
"How about this place?" Lu Xun asked after showing Xu Ke around the room. "If you don’t like it, we can change it. Don’t hesitate to ask."
Lu Xun’s attitude was so accommodating that it gave the illusion that one could express any opinion.
Xu Ke took another look at the room, then said, "No need, this place looks good enough. Plus, it’s just me living here. There’s no need for it to be excessively large or fancy. When I was a photographer, I used to stay in outdoor tents, and this is much better than a tent."
"Alright, if you have no objection, this place is yours. Here’s my number; you can contact me if you need anything." Lu Xun handed Xu Ke a business card.
"I didn’t prepare a business card; do you have a pen, Brother Lu? I can write down my contact information for you." Xu Ke said, showing a slightly regretful expression as he looked at the business card.
"No need, I have your contact information." Lu Xun waved his hand to decline Xu Ke’s offer. "Alright then, since there’s nothing else I can help with, I’ll be going. Call if you need anything."
"Okay, take care, goodbye!" Xu Ke saw Lu Xun out to the door, and when he saw the elevator doors close in front of him, the smile on Xu Ke’s face slowly faded.
After closing the door, Xu Ke nonchalantly roamed the room, his eyes scanning potential spots for hidden cameras. Only after thoroughly checking the space and finding no cameras did he relax his expression, standing there like a drawn sword with an evasive sharpness.
Meanwhile, as Lu Xun left Xu Ke’s place, he made a call to his Boss.
"How is it?" Boss Xiong’s gruff voice echoed over the phone.
"So far, he seems nice and manageable. As for anything else, we’ll need to keep observing." Lu Xun replied.
