Supreme Heir Son-in-law

Chapter 902: Taking It a Step Further

Chapter 902: Taking It a Step Further

Early the next morning, Brother Zhao, who had been hungover all night, opened his eyes and almost passed out. He had drunk far too much the night before, and now, waking up felt like his brain had been split in half, making him want to bang his head against the wall from the discomfort.

Looking at Xu Ke, who was sleeping soundly on the other bed, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of envy.

Brother Zhao quietly got ready and left the room. The sound of the door closing resounded in the extremely quiet room, and Xu Ke, who had been seemingly asleep, opened his eyes, looking clear and awake, not at all like he had been sleeping.

He looked at the closed door, a slight smile appearing at the corner of his mouth, and then he closed his eyes again, this time truly falling asleep.

However, Xu Ke did not sleep for long before Brother Zhao woke him up.

"Wake up quickly, we need to leave," Brother Zhao said, shaking Xu Ke twice.

"What’s wrong, Brother Zhao?" Xu Ke opened his eyes, asking with a puzzled look.

"Brother Qian is dead. This hotel isn’t safe, we need to leave immediately." Brother Zhao said quickly, reaching out to pull Xu Ke, his face looking extremely grim and serious.

"Dead? How did he die?" Xu Ke asked as he got out of bed, cooperating with Zhao’s pulling.

"Who knows how he got killed. I only heard that his eyes were gouged out, his tongue cut off, and his body cut open with his organs spilled everywhere. Anyone who kills in such a way is either a psychopath or has a deadly grudge against him. Either way, it’s not good for us. We need to get out of here."

As Brother Zhao spoke, he pulled Xu Ke to run, but Xu Ke remained firmly in place.

"If that’s the case, we shouldn’t run. The killer hasn’t been found, and if we leave in such a hurry, we’re practically telling others we have something to hide. What if they can’t find the killer and pin it on us?"

Xu Ke’s words made Brother Zhao stop, his face filled with worry. Brother Zhao felt weak and helpless, caught between a rock and a hard place, facing danger whether he moved or not, as if he was being pushed to the edge.

Xu Ke watched Brother Zhao’s changing expression, knowing that Zhao had probably imagined something terrible. He patted Zhao on the shoulder and said, "Relax, we’ll be fine. At worst, we’ll stick together for a couple of days. Even if the other party is a real psychopath, can we not handle it together?"

Xu Ke’s words reassured Brother Zhao, who remembered Xu Ke’s ability to kick a person flying with one foot, and he felt less anxious, recovering from his prior panic.

With such a horrific murder in the hotel, the police were bound to get involved, so the two stayed there for a few more days, cooperating with the investigation. Once it was confirmed that they were not suspects, they returned to the small town.

The first thing Brother Zhao did upon returning home was to collapse into bed and sleep soundly, his snoring loud enough to shake the heavens.

Doing everything under the police’s watch these days had been a real test of his mental endurance. But fortunately, he had already transferred the money from the previous deal and maintained business ties. Aside from being startled, the trip was quite fruitful.

Xu Ke followed Brother Zhao for another month, carefully noting the group’s supply and distribution chain, finally understanding why the organization had evaded government crackdowns multiple times.

This organization was too slick, unlike usual organizations that handle everything for higher profits. It acted solely as a middleman, creating a bridge that misled those it worked with, allowing it to slip through fingers and grow larger, eventually becoming a significant threat.

For the sake of the country and people, they sacrificed agents to infiltrate, knowing survival was unlikely. Yet, many still ventured in, sacrificing themselves in obscurity. Xu Ke admired such people and had become one himself.

Just as Xu Ke thought he would continue this bland routine of occasionally picking up goods, Brother Zhao stopped him.

Casually wiping sweat from his brow, Xu Ke asked Brother Zhao, "Do you have something to tell me?"

Brother Zhao looked at Xu Ke with mixed emotions, recalling how long it had taken him to reach this position. Yet, Xu Ke?

He hadn’t even been here two months, and headquarters was already transferring him to a new post. Though still an assistant, the opportunity was completely different, with different circles and scope of contact. It wouldn’t be long before Xu Ke would be so advanced that Brother Zhao would have to address him as "sir" or "brother." Sometimes, luck among people couldn’t be compared.

Despite feeling uneasy about Xu Ke’s rise, Brother Zhao remained supportive due to Xu Ke’s assistance in covering and mitigating risks during their time together, albeit with a tinge of jealousy.

"Congratulations, you’re getting promoted."

"Hmm?"

Seeing Xu Ke’s puzzled look, Brother Zhao explained, "Buy your ticket to Ning City for tonight. Once there, work under Brother Xiong. He’s a good guy, reputed to be kind to his subordinates. Being there is much better than staying in this small town with me. Just don’t forget about me when you rise high someday."

Listening to Brother Zhao’s envious tone, Xu Ke finally understood the reason for his strange demeanor today, yet the news of his promotion didn’t bring happiness. Instead, his brow furrowed tightly.

"Why was I suddenly transferred to Ning City? Is this a rule in the organization?"

Brother Zhao showed some uncertainty, as he too didn’t know why the higher-ups will suddenly transfer Xu Ke. He replied, "There’s no such rule, and I don’t know why you’re being transferred. But whatever, a promotion isn’t bad, and this might be your opportunity."
